User:Traveler100/clean-up tools proposals

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have been taking a look at the clean-up request categories to see how these could be better addressed. In particular Category:Orphaned articles. These lists are very large and we need some way to address the lists more effectively.

There is a need for tools to aid editors, here are a few suggestions.

WikiProject scanning[edit]

One of the ways to get these article clean-ups addressed is to bring them to the attention of subject experts by adding the articles to appropriate WikiProjects. It would therefore be useful to list the articles in a clean-up category, such as Category:Orphaned articles from September 2012, that do not belong to a WikiProject. To do this the following tool would be useful:

Articles in category that do not belong to a subject WikiProject or has no talk page[edit]

User inputs name of a category. Tool goes through the articles in the category and creates a list (as links) to talk pages that do not have {{WikiProject in the text.

  • Logic assumes that template clean-up has been run that has renamed all abbreviation of templates to correct full name.
  • Need to have a list of excluded WikiProject so it does not count administration projects such as {{WikiProject Articles for creation}}, {{WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors}} and {{WikiProject Wikify}}.
  • If article does not have a talk page this should be listed as article needing a talk page as a redlink to the missing page.

Tool should work like Image checker or CatScan

No longer orphan[edit]

Many articles in subcategories Category:Orphaned articles are no longer orphans. It would be useful to be able to quickly identify which articles have incoming article links (excluding disambiguous pages).

AWB to differentiate between no and few incoming links[edit]

See Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Feature requests#few orphan tag.

Locating photographs for articles[edit]

Currently it is possible to search for images using key words, such as the article title, it would be useful to search for images based on location.

Find images near articles in category[edit]

Idea is to select a category of photo requests, for example Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in British Columbia. The tool would read the coordinate(s) on each article page and check on Commons for an article with a nearby similar coordinate. Could use similar logic to Shoot Me. Results should be displayed similar to FIST.

Articles in category without coords[edit]

Idea is a tool that lists on demand articles in a category that do not have coordinates. This would be useful for cleaning up sub-categories of Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in places so that can guarantee all requests show up when the Map all tool is used from the category or that the tool proposal above is more successful.
