On July 19-21, two extreme squall lines (one of which was officially classified as a derecho) passed through the Great Lakes region of the Midwest impacting the U.S. states Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.[1]
Overview[edit]
On July 19th just close to noon, the first derecho started in South Dakota with the first wind damage report near the northeastern part of the state being received at 12:05 PM.[2] Crossing over the Minnesota-South Dakota state line, the storm then raced across the state towards the northeastern part of Minnesota while producing more wind damage. Hail damage was reported just as the Storm Prediction Center issued a PDS Severe thunderstorm watch for parts of east central Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin. The watch was the sixth known watch with wind gusts potential of up to 105 MPH.
Producing more damage in Northwestern Wisconsin, the storm at it's greatest length in Wisconsin extended from near Tomahawk to near Stevens Point after producing a few tornadoes and moving southward once the line cleared Door County with an even longer line expanding from Lake Michigan to Tomah
