On July 27, 1990, activist Kim Thomas was found dead in her home in the Cotswold section of Charlotte, North Carolina. Members of her family suspected her husband, physician Ed Friedland. Friedland was charged four years after the crime but the Mecklenburg County district attorney dropped the charges in 1995. As of 2003, records obtained by The Charlotte Observer showed police had plenty of circumstantial evidence against Friedland but no real proof. One reason Friedland was suspected was the brutality of the killings, which police said suggested a relationship between Friedland and the killer. Friedland had been having an affair with his nurse, according to a tip police received. In 2020 new evidence was found pointing to another "person of interest" who was not Friedland. Defense attorney David Rudolf said he was told in November 2022 that DNA testing revealed a match to Marion Gales, who had done work for Thomas around the time of the killing. Rudolf claimed that earlier in the case, evidence pointing to Gales had been ignored.[1]
