Purpose[edit]

Since 1942, the San Bruno Chamber of Commerce has been the leading advocate for the business community in San Bruno. The Chamber strives to draw new companies to the city of San Bruno, strengthen the economic base, and ideally provide more jobs for the residents of San Bruno. The Chamber support members by offering connections that encourage business growth: networking opportunities, marketing guidance, business-to-business referral events, social media promotion, community celebrations, and exposure to political leaders making economic decisions that impact San Bruno businesses. The San Bruno Chamber of Commerce opened in the 1940’s as a direct outcome of the United States’ entrance into World War II. Waging war in the Pacific, the US army opened a San Bruno base. The influx of military families caused the bedroom community to grow from 4,000 residents in 1940 to more than 15,000 residents in the mid-1940’s. The City of San Bruno experienced an economic boom for the first time since the 1929 Depression stagnated building construction and taxes for government services. In 1942, San Bruno City officials and business owners founded the San Bruno Chamber of Commerce to support, promote, and enhance this economic growth.

Purpose[edit]

The founding Chamber members organized the Chamber with the purpose of:

“Advancing the economic, industrial, professional, cultural, and civic welfare of the San Bruno are and the County of San Mateo to encourage the growth of existing businesses, while giving all proper assistance to any new firm(s) or individual(s) seeking to locate in San Bruno and to support all those activities believed to be beneficial to the community and area and to oppose those which might be detrimental. The Chamber in its activities shall be non-partisan, non-sectarian, and shall take no part in, or lend its influence to, the election of any candidate for city, county, state, or other public office.” (San Bruno Chamber of Commerce By-laws)[2]

Operations[edit]

The chamber of commerce consist of Board of Directors and paying members and staff members. The San Bruno Chamber of Commerce currently consist of ten Board of directors and four staff members. The chamber has paying members all over San Mateo County.
