Biography[edit]

Hays was born in Whittier, California. He holds a Master’s Degree in English Literature from the University of California, Irvine, and a Master’s Degree in Communications from Cal State Fullerton, Fullerton, CA.

Hays has spent his entire adult life as either a freelance writer[1], author or co-author of books, and/or a media consultant for general consumer and business-to-business publications involving a broad range of experiences in editorial, marketing, and conference development. He also has contributed feature articles and cover stories for Men’s Health, TV Guide, The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Magazine, Vista Magazine, and Men’s Fitness, among many others. He is the author or co-author of several non-fiction books for major publishing companies, including Warner Books, Gotham Books, Rodale, Barron’s Educational Books; and author of several children’s books in the non-fiction library market.

Currently, he produces and co-hosts the radio/cable TV show "Radio Caravan", an eclectic mix of interviews, politics, music, and conversations about random stuff. Recent guests have included giant-screen filmmaker Greg MacGillivray; legendary singer-songwriter Jack Tempchin ("Peaceful Easy Feeling"); Marine-life artist Wyland; David Emmes, co-founder of South Coast Repertory; Orange County, Calif., Sheriff Sandra Hutchens; and Max Gardner, president/CEO of Orange County United Way. Hays has also interviewed Roger Daltrey and jazz-great Boney James.

"Radio Caravan" reaches 110,000 residents of Laguna Beach, Calif., and the surrounding communities, while the cable TV show reaches 250,000 Cox TV subscribers in Orange County and Palos Verdes.

Last year, Hays produced a 7-minute music documentary for the 25th Anniversary of Friendship Shelter. In 2008, he produced a benefit CD for the homeless titled Shelter Me; All proceeds benefitted Friendship Shelter, with programs in Laguna Beach and San Clemente, CA. Between 2000-2004, Hays worked as an editorial consultant in the interactive media industry, with an emphasis on publishing and conferences. More recently, he has worked as a part-time college instructor at University of California, Irvine (extension); and Orange Coast, Saddleback, and Irvine Valley community colleges. He teaches Composition, Critical Thinking, Feature Writing, Freelance Writing, Writing for the Web, Literary Journalism, Mass Communications, and Newspaper Production. In 2007, he coordinated a Study Abroad [3] program for 30 students to Austria, Italy, and Germany.
