From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Welcome to the WikiProject on extrasolar planets! For membership information, please see the Membership Office.

Goals[edit]

This WikiProject aims to improve coverage of extrasolar planets across Wikipedia, as well as to improve the quality of template pages related to extrasolar planets. Our group also wishes to keep a constant patrol on exoplanet pages even when the pace of new discoveries in the field is low, so that when discoveries are made, there will be individuals ready to edit exoplanet pages and create new ones. Overall, what this project ultimately desires is a comprehensive coverage for all extrasolar planets, and, even if the planet is not particularly notable, at least its accounting-for in a list of all extrasolar planets discovered.

This project also wishes to expand coverage of all topics related to extrasolar planets, in addition to pages on planets themselves; many such pages are ignored along with the pages which list individual planets. These include concepts such as the habitable zone, natural satellite habitability, and others, whose topics, while still in the early research phase without much knowledge of them existing, could still be more comprehensively covered than they are currently.

A final area which this WikiProject focuses on is astrobiology. The study of extrasolar planets closely corresponds with the search for life on other worlds, and in this we wish to improve articles on the subject of astrobiology as well. More information (which has not yet been moved here) can be found on the proposal page.

Parent project[edit]

This project will operate under the umbrella of WikiProject Astronomical objects, as many members of that project are contributors to our subject matter, and the scope of our project falls within theirs. However, the reason for the constitution of a special WikiProject is because of the needs of the subject matter, such as various differences in guidelines and the size of the subject matter. Nevertheless, a large amount of common ground can be found, including scope, expertise, and various administrative tasks.

Through this larger WikiProject, our project will also maintain a link to WikiProject Astronomy, and we would like to be listed on their page as a member project.
