Franklin Martin[edit]

For the Brazilian journalist Franklin de Sousa Martins, see Franklin Martins Franklin Martin is an American documentary film director, producer, screenwriter and actor best known for his sport documentaries Walking on Dead Fish in (2008) and Long Shot: The Kevin Laue Story in 2012. Since 2005, he has founded and runs the production company Dutchmen Films based in Los Angeles.

Career Martin studied in Hofstra University and was a four-year letterman on Hofstra's Division I basketball team wearing the 22 jersey and graduated from the university wit a Bachelors degree. He continued at Tennessee State University where he additionally coached and graduated with a Master's Degree.[32]

Martin started his film career as an actor taking roles in a number of films and TV series under the name Frank Martin, notably in Above the Rim where he befirended Tupac Shakur.[32]

Starting 2005, he moved on to writing, producing and directing documentaries. He founded Dutchmen Films, his own production house. The name is a tribute to his alma mater, The Flying Dutchmen.

His debut film as director was Walking on Dead Fish[33][34] (full title Hurricane Season: Walking on Dead Fish) about the tiny town of LaPlace welcoming New Orleans residents in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the huge changes when the town's East St. John football coach declared all positions open (even those held by ESJ seniors) which put their scholarship chances, for many, their only chance at a college education, in jeopardy. But rather than fight or turn bitter, these young men banded together in the face of tragedy to create a team.

He followed that up with Long Shot: The Kevin Laue Story, another sports documentary, this time about a one-handed basketball player Kevin Laue who aspired to become a college basketball player.[35]

He is producing an upcoming film Children Rise directed by Billy Raftery about the lives of two South African youths, Zulieka and Ariel, as they grow up from children to teenagers on the streets of Durham, South Africa. The documentary is in post-production. He is also directing Silent Artist: The Martin Ramirez Story about a homeless Mexican immigrant who was confined for several years in a mental institution and turns out to be a great artist. Other Dutchmen Films projects include Predator's Ball about Michael Milken, Back Nine about two young black kids who dream of playing golf, Lauren's Journey about fashion model Lauren Wasser and Ashes to Dust.

Medora is a 2013 documentary film by Andrew Cohn and Davy Rothbart about a small town basketball team based in Medora, Indiana, called the Medora Hornets, the town's 70-students high school basketball team which is on a losing streak of many seasons, just unable to keep up with larger schools in the area league, much as Medora itself struggles to barely survive.

The directors were initially interested in the team after an article in The New York Times about the team. For the full season 2010-2011, they took more than 600 hours of footage about the team and the lives and struggles of its team members.[1] The post-production costs were financed through the crowdfunding site Kickstarter.[2] The 82-minute resulting documentary has been released in November 2013.

Festivals Medora had its premiere during the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2013. It was also an official selection during the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in 2013.

Critics agree that Medora is not just another basketball documentary. Variety magazine said that the filmmakers Andrew Cohn and Davy Rothbart "deliver a bleakly potent portrait of life in an economically devastated Middle American town."

The victory was all the more remarkable because it was the first defeat of Cerdan in 105 boxing fights. Cerdan however won the rematch on July 10, 1948 less than two months later. Cyriel Delannoit recaptured the title again in November 1948 after a win on points against Dutch boxer Luc van Dam.

In 1949 he lost back the title to the Italian boxer Tiberio Mitri. On 1 July 1951, he lost a crucial game to world champion Sugar Ray Robinson in 3rd round. Delannoit's shining days had finished despite further matches.

In 1951, he appeared briefly in the film Ah! Qu'il fait bon chez nous acting as himself.

Delannoit left his residence in Geraardsbergen to live in Brussels, living there for more than 20 years. At the end of the 1970s he returned to his hometown, completely destitute, and in need of social welfare for him and his family. He died in poverty in 1998 after a long illness.

Legacy The life story of Cyriel Delannoit has been a source of inspiration for various scripts and films. Fernand Handtpoorter wrote the story of Delannoit for a documentary about him. The Belgian television series Koning van de Wereld (meaning King of the world) was partly based on the life story of the boxer.

In 2005 he was nominated for The Greatest Belgian but finishing at 321 in the final listing.

Boxer turned artist Jean-Pierre Coopman was commissioned to sculpt a statue of Cyriel Delannoit based on his famous win over Marcel Cerdan.

Eventually Chawki was included alongside a great number of Arab artists in the project.[12] Ahmed Chawki's breakthrough came in 2012, when he teamed up with Moroccan RedOne.[13] At that time, RedOne had produced Khaled latest album C'est la vie and the title track "C'est la vie" openning the door for further collaborations with Middle East acts including Ahmed Chawki. "Habibi I Love You", a multilingual crossover song with Arabic elements and western dance tunes.

The song was notably a hit in France charting in SNEP, the official French Singles Chart with additional French lyrics as "Habibi I Love You (Mon Amour I Love you)" with vocals featuring Kenza Farah.[9] The French trilingual version was launched with a live performance in Marseilles during the "Fête de la Musique" on 21 June 2013. Chawki's song has been covered including in Romanian by Nek si Blondu de la Timisoara and it has been subject to great number of remixes. The track also appeared in a number of compilations, and remains greatly popular with zumba fitness exercise adherents.

"Changes" is a single by the Parisian electric duo Faul & Wad Ad sampling on the refrain of the Pnau song "Baby".[46]

Background In 2007, Pnau released the track "Baby" sung by a children's choir on their self-titled album Pnau. Pnau is a side project of Nick Littlemore of Australian duo Empire of the Sun and of Peter Mayes. The track "Baby" was written by Nick and Sam Littlemore and Peter Mayes.

In 2008, Breakbot released a remix called "Baby (Breakbot Remix)" that gave the track further fame.

Faul & Wad Ad, were a French DJ and production duo who knew each other from school days. Faul real name Maxime was affectionately called Faul by his brother. He was also known as Lazy (the German term for Faul). Wad Ad was the pseudonym of Camil. Maxime and Camil fans of warm, soulful and natural sounds rather than studio technique and gimmicks.

Faul & Wad Ad had discovered the track "Baby" on a YouTube posting and had been very keen to use the refrain choir segments in one of their own songs. They cut the track "Changes" using the segment and sent it to Pnau who loved it and gave the right to use it in what turned out to be an even more famous track online and eventually a major release for Faul & Wad Ad, their debut chart hit and a number 1 for them in the German charts. The single also charted in Austria, Belgium, France and Switzerland.

He gained fame in Uganda, Tanzania and throughout Eastern Africa., later settling in Finland and developing a distinct world music career still singing mostly in Swahili and Luganda with some additional lyrics in English. Considered a world music performer from East Africa, he has appeared in jazz, world music, pop, rock and fusion festivals and has released studio albums Baby Gal, Mad Ice and Maneno and EP Maisha.

Career Mad Ice was born on 8 October 1980 in Masaka and moved to Kampala when he was one year old. At age 7, his family moved to Tanzania coming back to Uganda when he was ten. His first experiences were with Dancehall/Ragga Muffin music in Uganda starting in 1995. In 1999 as a young 19 year old, he relocated back to Mwanza, Tanzania and eventually to the capital Dar-es-Salaam to pursue better opportunities as an MC and performer on various shows and venues. In his formative years in Tanzania, he was trained and supervised by Canadian musician Corry Morriarty and Tanzanian musician Richard Mloka and learned to play guitar.[53] Influenced mostly by mid 1990s Caribbean sounds of Chaka Demus & Pliers, Shaggy amongst others, his first recording was "Wanadamu" that found airplay time on some stations and was a hit in Tanzania. Encouraged by its success, he released the follow up single "Baby Gal" that exploded throughout East Africa. His debut album Baby Gal was published in 2003 with some further success. He says in an interview: "I was born in Uganda, but I spent some years in Tanzania. There my career as a singer really started. Since I sang mostly in Swahili, the majority has always taken me as a Tanzanian artist".[54] The 2003 album was produced in Tanzania by Finnish record producer based in Tanzania called Miikka "Mwamba" Kari. It included soca beats, African rhythms, with touches of Ragga, Soul and Pop, and songs sung in Swahili, Luganda and English.[53]

In 2004, when Miikka Mwamba Kari returned to Finland, he invited Mad Ice to Finland where he signed a three-year contract with Miikka's label Mwamba Records. Residing in Helsinki and collaborating with him, he worked on a follow-up self-titled Mad Ice recorded in Firelight Studios in 2005 in Finland and released on Mwamba Records with the Finnish Edel Records label for distribution. Miikka Mwamba Kari has also produced for other African artists like Inspector Haroun, Lady Jaydee, Chegge, Solid Ground Family, Dknob. Mad Ice toured throughout Europe as part of the "Scandinavian world music scene" promoting his new album. His music was played by many European radio stations and at festivals. The new album included a remake of a number of good songs from Baby Gal including his successful single "Baby Gal" as well as a new single release "Wange" that also charted on various East African charts reaching number 1 in both Uganda and Tanzania in 2005-2006. Mad Ice used the opportunity to form a collective that included Ziggy Dee and Quina Lad. The collective called "The Comrades" was to promote Ugandan artists based in Tanzania.[53] "Wange" was also picked up by Finnish stations, particularly Power FM making him more famous in Finland.

In 2006, he had success with his single "Ni Wewe" and took part in 2007 in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) making it to the semi-finals in the world music category with his song "Nionyeshe Njia".[55] He has toured East African countries to maintain his fan base despite his residency in Finland and writes almost all his songs using Swahili and Luganda most of the time.

The following album was Maneno in 2007 and included many of his successes in recent years like "Wange", "Malaika" and "Nionyeshe njia" and was released on the Finnish Recordhouse label and MadStylee.com online.[56]

In 2011, Mad Ice released his EP titled Maisha.[57] Recorded in Finnvox Studios, and produced by Oona Kapari, it was a great departure from earlier materials towards a softer soul sound. The EP resulted in release of title track "Maisha", "Te Amo" and a big hit "Mapenzi Sumu" spearheaded by a music video directed by Joseph Bitar in Helsinki, Finland in July 2011.

Personal life He moved to Finland in 2004 for promoting a musical career and applied for permenant residency and citizenship in 2006. He is married to Niina, a Finnish woman and the couple have two kids together.[54]
