Chalonnes-sous-le-Lude is a former commune in the Maine-et-Loire department in the Pays de la Loire region in western France. On 15 December 2016, it was merged into the new commune Noyant-Villages.[2]

This commune is located in the Baugeois, north-east of the commune of Noyant, within the boundaries of the department of Indre-et-Loire.

Geography[edit]

This Angevin commune in western France is located in eastern Baugeois, between Broc (2 km) and Meigné-le-Vicomte (6 km), 21 km from Baugé and 39 km from Saumur[3], [4].

The Baugeois is the northeast part of the department of Maine-et-Loire. It is bounded to the south by the Authion valley and that of the Loire, and to the west by the Sarthe valley[5].

The closest communes are Broc (2 km), Dénezé-sous-le-Lude (5 km), Dissé-sous-le-Lude (5 km), Marcilly-sur-Maulne (5 km), Braye-sur-Maulne (6 km), Meigné-le-Vicomte (6 km), Chigné (7 km), Noyant (7 km), Lublé (8 km) and Méon (8 km)[4].

Geology and relief[edit]

The altitude of the commune varies from 52 to 101 meters[6], for an average altitude of 77 meters.

The relief of the Baugeois consists mainly of a plateau, sandy soil, siliceous or limestone[7], characterized by large sedimentary outcrops, cretaceous, light shades of sand and limestone.

Its territory covers an area of more than 16 km2 (1649 hectares)[6], and consists of hedgerows and forests[8]. Chalonnes-sous-le-Lude is located on the landscape unit of Plateau du Baugeois[9]. Part of the commune is classified as a natural area of ecological interest, floristic and wildlife (ZNIEFF), for areas of limestone lawns and afforestation between Chalonnes-sous-le-Lude and Broc, the humid valley in the Bareilles forest, the forest of Bareilles, and the Maulne valley[10].

Climate[edit]

Its climate is temperate, oceanic type. The Angevin climate is particularly mild, due to its location between oceanic and continental influences. Generally winters are rainy, rare frosts and sunny summers[7].
