The RN's destroyers at the outbreak of the First World War were those vessels developed to counter the threat of the small fast torpedo boats used by other navies to the capital ships of the RN.

German destroyers and torpedo boats of WWI[edit]
German destroyers and torpedo boats at the outbreak of the First World War were those vessels developed to offset the numerical advantage in capital ships held by Germany's rivals, particularly the Royal Navy. German vessels of this type were classed throughout as torpedo boats, although the later, larger ocean-going vessels equated to destroyers in other navies, and were referred to as such by their crews.
