Various Small Fires (VSF) is a contemporary art gallery located in Los Angeles, California.

History[edit]

VSF was founded by Esther Kim Varet in Venice, Los Angeles, in 2012[1]. The gallery borrows its name from artist Ed Ruscha’s 1964 conceptual art book Various Small Fires and Milk.[2][3]

The inaugural exhibition by New Zealand artist Fiona Connor, Murals and Print, featured “a set of movable walls that were continually rearranged to accommodate a series of events.”[1]

In 2014, VSF relocated[4] to Hollywood, California [5] to a 1940’s era building remodeled by Johnston Marklee architects.[6][7]

Programming[edit]

Writer Demie Kim noted on Artsy that, “Various Small Fires is pushing forward existing art-historical and contemporary discourse through socially engaged programming—from fresh, generationally relevant shows by an over 50 percent female roster to reinstalls of major exhibitions from the ’60s.”[8]

Artists[edit]

Artists including Billy Al Bengston, The Harrison Studio, Judith Linhares, Liz Magic Laser, and Anna Sew Hoy have exhibited at the gallery.
