Tarkington Honors College[edit]

History and Overview

Tarkington Honors College is a learning community located within the Tarkington Residence Hall at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Though Tarkington is an all male Residence hall, Tarkington Honors College applauds itself as being one of the most diverse floors of Tarkington. The structure of Tarkington Residence is laid out in a fashion dividing the structure into 16 different floors. The Tarkington Honors College is located on the 3rd floor on the Northwestern quadrant. To gain entry into the Honors College one must have above a 3.5 gpa and are encouraged to have skills in the sports of dodge ball, soccer, flag football, spike ball, and Mortal Kombat. Tarkington Honors College (more commonly referred to as 'Tark Honors College') was first charted on August 16th, 2017 by cofounders Zach Kleyn and Humza Syed. The charter was later approved by floor RA Balazs Bonyhay and ranking senators of the Tarkington halberdier club. The Atmosphere within Tarkington Honors College is often claimed as ‘family like’ as members often become very close with one another while studying. This is primarily what the Tarkington Residence Hall is known for.

Along with being an academic strong hold for the campus, tark honors college prides itself as being athletically involved within Purdue's campus. It currently has a very high ranking soccer team within 'the gold league' of the Purdue intramural soccer league. Headed by Owner/player/captain Humza Syed the team is looking to have an undefeated season and claim the gold cup for the tark sharks.

Rules of the College

The Tarkington Honors College headquarters are located within room 380 along with much of the institution's laws and traditions. The Rules include the following: 1) Respect women at all times 2) Be a man 3) No Dasani water Products 4) Tarkington 1st. always. 5) You must refer to Booth Tarkington (the founder of Tarkington Residents hall) as ‘Lord Tarkington.'

Along with these rules come the unwritten rules which include the following. 1) if someone yells ‘tark sharks’ you must run to the hallway and violently repeat the phrase. 2) If a guest says anti-Tarkington phrases you are to immediately escort them from the Tarkington grounds. Stating blasphemy against tark while being a resident is grounds for termination. 3) All disputes within Tark Honors College are settled in hand to hand combat. 4) Guests are to be escorted at all times within Tarkington Honors college or risk being a victim of a tark attack. 5) Tarkington Honors College has an open door policy which means residents are encouraged to leave their doors open so that it helps cool the residence hall and allows for the exchange of conversations which contribute to the Tark family atmosphere. 6) If you are unwilling to give your life for the good of Tarkington than you do not belong in Tark Honors College. 7) You must use the Tarkington Honors College Sticker in every snap chat you send. All rules are enforced by The Central Tark Rangers who police the Tarkington Honors College and contribute to the extremely safe environment.

Traditions

Along with Tark Honors College rules comes an important set of traditions. When ending a prayer to your religious diety it is common to say “In the name of the Tark Mark, The Tark Shark, and the Holy Newt Tark, Amen.” Another tradition is ‘the daily draws’ where Tark Honors College residents are encouraged to create artistic expressions celebrating Tarkington in the Artisan district of Tark Honors College. All drawling’s made during the day are erased later at night in order to keep the flow of creativity within Tarkington. Along with these traditions come the bonding activities that make up a large part of the family like atmosphere within Tarkington. Every Wednesday at 7:30 the floor engages in athletics to increase brain activity and let out steam. The activities range from dodge ball to flag football and everyone is always happy to be involved. Along with activities comes floor dinners every Thursday at 5:30 where the members of Tarkington Honors College kick back and enjoy a break after a stressful week.

Another tradition within the Tarkington Honors College is 'Tark Week.' During this week residents grasp with what it really means to be a part of Tarkington. Using Tarkington's allotted budge of 20,000 dollars per year, Tarkington Residents enjoy rented out movie theaters, Mini Golfing, Guinness World Record attempts, and much much more. It is a fun week and many outside guests are encouraged to attend. As of September 9th, 2017 there have been talks with the Discovery Channel to televise the event.

Philosophy

Though the lack of women in Tarkington Honors College has caused a bit of an issue with the functioning of the Academic Institution, philosophical steps have been taken to fix this issue. Zach Kleyn, a cofounder of the institution, applied the concepts of a Free Zone within Tarkington Honors college to increase diversity and community out reach. Tarkington Honors College, in essence, has become ‘a state of mind’ In conjunction with being a physical location. To be a member of Tarkington Honors College one only needs to have a Tarkington honors college state of mind. This philosophical phrase helped coin the motto of the Tark Honors College, “When life gets dark let Tark be the spark.” This encourages Tarkington residents to look inwards towards the Tarkington community for assistance when life gets tough. It is not uncommon for Tarkington Residence to put Tark Honors College above Purdue, academics, their girl friends, and in extreme cases of Tark Patriotism, their own families.

The Tark Shark is the official Mascot of the Tarkington Honors College. Most residence of the Tarkington Honors College shop at the local Tark Mark. The Tark Mark is located in the basement of the Tarkington Residents hall and is marketed as a whole foods mixed with a seven eleven. Tark Honors college residence enjoy the benefits the Tark Mark has as well as the college atmosphere. The Tark Honors College Boasts the highest upperclassmen return rate over any other residence hall at the Purdue campus.
