PCA records

Hi, you commented on the lack of availability of the PCA records for films prior to 1968, there located here: Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Margaret Herrick Library

Also, when you do your research, you mentioned how permissive ratings used to be etc. Sometimes, movies were/are edited before submitting to the MPAA, or after to receive a lower rating and it may not be mentioned on the MPAA website. The thing is, there are misprints on video/DVD covers all the time. Probably the most important, movies which were edited to ensure a lower rating may have their uncut versions released on video/DVD, the distributors don't always study these things and examine which print is the video. For example, The MPAA website says that A Clockwork Orange originally received an X then was later edited and released with an R. The DVD/VHS releases say R but it is actually, the original X version. There is info. on this at the Wikipedia article and on the internet. The movie Midnight Cowboy at the MPAA website says that it was originally rated X and then later edited to fit into the R category. That's not true, it's widely known (in books etc.) that the MPAA actually re-rated the movie without the need for cuts (they were criticized at the time for giving such a harsh rating to what some critics (notably Rex Reed) felt was an R-rated movie). Also, several British horror films were edited before being submitted in order to get a less harsh M/GP/PG rating. Tales From the Crypt (the original BBFC cut version was submitted and rated PG, the Fox region 1 DVD is actually uncut despite the PG on the cover), Taste the Blood of Dracula (pre-cut version originally got a GP, uncut version on DVD rated R), The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (a nude scene was not present in the American release which was rated PG but, it's on the current DVD) I can go on and on.... :-) ConvexLenses (talk) 16:28, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
