BEFORE LEAVING ME A MESSAGE please read the following (UPDATED FEB 16, 2010):

If you wish to contact me privately on an issue, please use the "E-mail this user" button. I have no choice but to ignore all personal e-mails sent to me that do not clearly indicate your Wikipedia username as I can't do anything without that information (unless of course I know you).

Four things to note:

  • I have no interest in debating the keeping of articles or images that I have uploaded. If current Wikipedia rules forbid an article or image that I uploaded or created in good faith at a time when such things were allowed, delete away (or seek consensus from others). All I ask is that the WP:AFD process be used rather than WP:PROD, as I find the latter insulting. I've never created nonsense articles. If an article I created is deleted, please feel free to pass along the URL of its Deletionpedia archive.
  • I give permission to visitors to this talk page to delete "Image rationale" bot notifications, newsletters, polls, and other "non-discussion" threads. I have no desire to archive them, and will probably delete them myself before archiving the current page anyway.
  • My opinions re: Articles for Deletion are generally not up for debate. I do not watchlist those discussions. I leave my opinion and move on and I'm well aware my opinions are not shared by others. AFD is not a democratic vote anyway. Any followup that doesn't include a link to the AFD discussion in question will be ignored.
  • I'll reply to you on your own talk page unless you request differently.

Bot notices (including image-upload warnings) are generally not archived unless discussion ensues. The warnings I receive are generally due to images I've uploaded in the past having been replaced by new versions (and therefore orphaned) or for images I uploaded in good faith under previous Wikipedia image use policy; I do not support subsequent changes to the policy and no longer upload images here, so any warnings should be for images uploaded prior to the summer of 2007 that I no longer care less about.

Pedro II of Brazil[edit]

23skidoo, I am sorry to bother you, but I need help now and I'm finding none. In the article Pedro II of Brazil there is a new editor who insists on adding "last names" to the emperor, although western royals do not have last names. And even though I have pointed him several times that the sources says that he did not have last name the editor insist on adding it with no source or anything to back his claim. Not only that, but now he is simply changing the meaning of quotations taken directly from a book! Could you please do something about it? Please, do not tell me to look for help on arbitration, or for someone else. I have already done that and no one does absolutely nothing. Regards, --Lecen (talk) 18:51, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Survey on quality control policies[edit]

As part of a project funded by the European Commission (QLectives), we are collecting and analysing data to study quality control mechanisms and inclusion/deletion policies in Wikipedia. According to our records, you participated in a large number of AfD. We are currently soliciting editors with a long record of participation in AfD discussions to send us their feedback via a very informal survey.

The survey takes less than 5 minutes and is available at this URL. Should you have any questions about this project, feel free to get in touch.

Thanks for your help! --DarTar (talk) 10:38, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article The Adding Machine: Collected Essays has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced for 3½ years, fails WP:V.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Stifle (talk) 10:49, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, I'm fairly certain that no rule or guideline compels you to open an AFD discussion when you remove a PROD tag (particularly since you want to keep the article). All you're expected to do is give a good reason in the edit summary why you're removing the PROD. (If anything, it's up to the person who added PROD in the first place whether or not to continue at AFD.) Again, just FYI... Thanks, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 21:30, 30 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:AnnMargrock.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:AnnMargrock.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:01, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:AnnMargrock.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:AnnMargrock.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. FASTILYsock(TALK) 05:22, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Survey on gender[edit]

Hi! I'm Liria Veronesi (User:Akoha77) and, together with Paolo Massa (User:Phauly), I'm starting an empirical research on "Gender and votes in requests for adminship". For this reason, we need to know the gender of Wikipedians who were candidated to become admins.

We tried looking for the templates User:UBX/male and User:UBX/female but only 4 admins use it. We also used the API for getting the gender field in the profile but, out of 1744 admins, only around 400 have filled this field. But we would benefit from a larger coverage, i.e. possibly knowing the gender of 100% of candidates.

So, after asking for advise to 3 admins and receiving 2 positive replies (1 and 2), we decided to try to ask directly to Wikipedians.

Thus, would you be so kind to write your gender [Male / Female / Other], together with a text comment if you want, on my talk page at User_talk:Akoha77? If you prefer to send me this information privately, you can send me an email, the information will be kept confidential and never shared.

Thanks! Akoha77 (talk) 12:31, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Otherworld tv series from 1985[edit]

Hi,

For twenty-five years I have wished I could have had the good fortune to have been able to see the remaining five episodes of the 'otheworld' TV series. You appear to be a possible source of information that might result in finding and fulfilling my wish to see the concluding episodes for this 1985 tv series. I gather that your life is full of other corncerns beyond that of helping some unknown inquirer. I simply wanted to ask you what, if anything, that you could tell me on the chance that you might be able to help me in my quest. Unlike the series, time is running out for me. I would offer you my heartfelt thanks and gratitude for any insight from you that you could spare when time permits. I can be reached at the following e-mail address: <shopper4adeal@yahoo.com> Thank you in advance for your consideration 205.232.244.109 (talk) 22:20, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Juan Williams[edit]

I don't understand your revert. Apart from the archived discussion from last year and the previous years, the material you restored was never discussed on Talk:Juan Williams but on User talk:Davidpatrick who moved it to the talk page.[1] Since the article talk page is not used to discuss editors, can you explain why you restored it? Viriditas (talk) 04:29, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to restoring a discussion about editors that never took place on the original talk page, you also restored a thread from a year ago that claims Williams was part of a "sex scandal". I'm having great difficulty why you would show up out of the blue and do this. Could you explain? Viriditas (talk) 04:43, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Pending an actual explanation, I've archived the old sex scandal thread claim from a year ago (there was no sex scandal, and we should not be promoting false commentary about BLP's on a talk page) and removed the off-topic discussion that has nothing to do with improving the article. I can't imagine why you thought it was good to restore these things. Viriditas (talk) 04:48, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So, you've returned after a four month vacation to restore false allegations against a BLP and to restore personal attacks on editors and off topic comments moved to the talk page without my permission? No, that's not right. You'll need to explain your reason for disrupting the talk page to someone else. I've removed it. I'm happy you've returned, but I would like to see some constructive edits from you instead. Viriditas (talk) 05:36, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

???[edit]

Did you really just block Viriditas (talk · contribs) for calling you a "meat puppet" ([2])? Because a) he didn't actually do that, and b) if he had done that, it's generally frowned upon to block people for perceived insults directed at one's own person. I guess I'm also confused about why you're edit-warring to restore clearly inappropriate material to an article talk page, and then blocking the person you're edit-warring with. I'm having a really hard time understanding why Viriditas shouldn't be unblocked. Can you clarify? MastCell Talk 06:27, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like a bad decision to me (speaking as an uninvolved observer).--SPhilbrickT 13:59, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ditto. Plus it appears as though 23skidoo is involved in some sort of content dispute with Viriditas. Bad, bad block. → ROUX  21:15, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is not an appropriate block for a number of reasons, and I strongly urge 23skidoo to reverse it. Bad block reason, a week would be too long anyway, not clear that you're uninvolved, posts prior to the block were not appropriate. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 17:23, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is something very wrong with this block. 23skidoo had not edited for several months (and indeed has not edited much in the last couple of years), then arrived suddenly at Talk:Juan Williams, restored some posts, and then blocked someone who objected. Someone needs to undo this asap. 23skidoo, are you willing to undo it yourself? SlimVirgin talk|contribs 17:31, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reply[edit]

Fair questions. For the record, I was not involved in a content dispute or edit warring with the editor in question. As an administrator I was attempting to restore some order and preserve a talk page from having recent content archived and placed "out of sight". I am happy to enlighten those who are curious as to exactly what happened and why this editor has been blocked for a short period of cooling off time. I happened upon the Juan Williams article last night and noticed that there was some edit warring going on. And in particular there were some attempts to archive current material from the talk page which is not appropriate conduct. One of the threads being put out of sight had responses from this month - indeed this past few days (though the section itself had been started a year back.) It discusses some sensitive matters. But the discussion was not of a tabloid nature, it quoted from and linked to the Washington Post - the employer of Williams at the time of the incidents discussed. And referred to matters for which Williams was investigated, disciplined and apologized. Matters that were very widely reported at the time. The sole area of contention was the exact nature of the incidents. And that is precisely why we have talk pages - for forthright, civil discussion between editors. There was other recent content that the editor was seeking to archive. Wearing my Administrator hat I stepped in civilly and restored the content. Not as an editor warring with an editor. But as an Administrator restoring a long-held protocol. And I requested that this recent material not be deleted or archived. The editor immediately reversed the restoration. It was then that I spent a little time looking through the recent histories of the editor's interactions with other editors and discovered that there were several complaints of bullying by this editor. I investigated and I regret to say that I did find numerous examples in just the preceding 24 hours of a very aggressive tone and threatening text towards other editors in both his messages and in his edit summaries. They are all there to be seen. By way of example he wrote to Veriss1 "I've set you right. Don't do it again". And "Anyone who continues to use Wikipedia to fight these battles will be taken to task". He wrote to Davidpatrick: "You either go with the sources or you don't edit." And "You either need to learn how to write biography articles on Wikipedia, or you need to stop writing. It's very simple." Those types of comments are not conducive to healthy discourse.

Being charitable and assuming that the editor is generally of good faith but perhaps being a hot head in the heat of edit warring, I decided to give him a clear warning that he could be blocked for his actions in removing article talk page material and uncivil interactions and inviting him to respond. By referring to the specific Wikipedia guidelines that he would be encouraged to review during such a suspension I truly hoped he would take a deep breath and realize that if several people (at least two editors and an Administrator) were all unhappy with his tone of discourse that perhaps he needed to cool down. But his immediate response was belligerent and to declare that I was "a meat puppet for Davidpatrick and Veriss1". Apart from the fact that this is patently false, it unfortunately confirmed the identical issue that the other editors have complained of. Namely a bullying aggressive tone that is counter-productive to civil discourse on Wikipedia. That is the reason for the block. I truly hope that the time off will help the editor to read Wikipedia:WikiBullying, Wikipedia:No angry mastodons, and WP:CIVIL and reflect on the merits of a calmer more friendly approach to fellow editors, even in the heat of disagreements. 23skidoo (talk) 12:46, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As proper as the block may have seemed at the time (I've been there and so, I'm sure, have most admins), it doesn't seem to be holding up at ANI. 23skidoo,

In answer to your question about porn actress Alexandra Quinn's true name, it is Diane Purdie Stewart. While she was in Ventura County Jail on drug charges she gave a statement to Los Angeles Police Department homicide detectives that implicated her friend, Jeffrey Weaver, in the 2003 murder of Christopher John Walsh. At trial in 2007, testifying under her true name, she attempted to recant her statement with an outlandish tale. The jury failed to believe her and convicted Weaver. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. MSU Interview[edit]

Dear 23skidoo,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.11.206.39 (talk) 23:41, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Javed Malik[edit]

I see you listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography. I have been off and on wikipedia as of late, but received a request to help a newbie on the article Javed Malik. From an email they sent, I requested sources for their information before I updated the article using wiki mark up. I would like another set of eyes to review the article, still almost stub/start format to ensure NPOV and to remove the citation needed templates. I have never used a YouTube video as a source before. I believe it does show Malik was on TV, to prove such statment, but I have asked at WP Pakistan for a translation to make sure it is OK to use as a source. I have left the "list of newspaper articles" as a source, as biographies on writers/authors do oftimes show a list of written works. Thank you for your help in the past when I was more active at Wikipedia, and if you do have a moment or two to spare, it would be appreciated Thanks kindly SriMesh | talk 21:04, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity[edit]

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:TheCelts.JPG[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:TheCelts.JPG.

Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:17, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Christopher Wood (Scottish painter) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:DannyCedrone.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:DannyCedrone.jpg.

Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 18:37, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

New deal for page patrollers[edit]

Hi 23skidoo,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:28, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I noticed that several years ago you voted in favour of keeping the article on UK porn star Cathy Barry. A few months ago it was deleted with only 3 votes in favour - evidently very few editors noticed. Would appreciate it if you could help, as it seems bizarre that an article on a clearly notable figure can just be deleted on the say so of so few editors?! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.18.55.1 (talk) 11:43, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Tara King has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of passing WP:NFICTION/GNG

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Your Header and Rules.[edit]

  • I guess your edit on an article I watch was done in April 2018. You might want to change your header as you do actively edit.
  • Your opinions are not shared by anyone in AfDs? That's not exactly true. People agree with other people's opinions all-the-time.
  • Why do you come off as hostile in your rules? It's not conducive.
  • I was once like you and wouldn't keep the conversation in one place. I refused. Now I do. If I didn't tell you to keep the conversation here and you responded on my talk page, I would just move it back her. So save yourself the time and keep it all in one spot. It's easier and keeps things organized.
  • Yes, people do things on other's talk pages all-the-time. But it's not their responsibility to remove bot notifications. Do it yourself. In fact, you can stop bot notifications (ie: disambiguation). I finally did that after years of disambiguation notices. In fact, disambiguation notices link to opt-out instructions. It
