June 2022[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Sideswipe9th. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Intersex, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Sideswipe9th (talk) 20:13, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I provided two sources. One is from a special interest/advocacy group, https://interactadvocates.org/, and is reliable by WP:RS. The other is a personal blog but it is from someone with substantial credibility in the intersex community, and it complements the information from the special interest group. Note that the edit does not make a medical claim; rather, it weakens a medical claim that was previously implied but that is definitely incorrect.
The Encyclopedia Britannica article may be a supposedly "reliable" source, but it is not a good source here. The parenthetical remark about sterility is wrong in humans, and "intersex" as a noun is not used for humans and is potentially offensive. (This is independent of any controversy around the use of "intersex" at all already discussed in the article; it's a similar situation to "transgender" used as a noun.) It can alternatively be just removed as not applicable to the subject of the article, which is intersexuality in humans. 2A00:23C5:1203:CE01:8CFC:3156:B518:2265 (talk) 20:32, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(Later.) I've deleted the incorrect and potentially offensive content instead; let's see if that's accepted.

I did, in fact, give a valid edit reason. The edit reason was "The Britannica article is an inappropriate source for intersexuality in humans, and includes incorrect medical information. (I attempted to fix it earlier with references; regardless, it cannot stand as it is.)".
I don't know what to do when other editors revert changes that correct inaccurate medical information in the article, first falsely claiming that I didn't give reliable sources (if there was a specific argument for them being unreliable, it should have been stated), and then falsely claiming that I didn't give an edit reason (if there was a specific argument for my given, quite detailed, reasons being "invalid", it should have been stated).
There's certainly no doubt that the Britannica article is about "Malformation - Sexual anomalies" in all organisms whereas the Wikipedia article is specifically about intersexuality in humans. It is not, therefore, surprising that the Britannica quote is not appropriate to describing the latter. Humans have medical technology for overcoming fertility issues, the scope of how "intersex" is applied to humans is arguably different, and the terminology used for a minority (often stigmatized) human group clearly requires more sensitivity than in an article about so-called "sexual anomalies" of organisms in general. I would argue that the content as it stands arguably violates Wikipedia:Offensive material. --2A00:23C5:1203:CE01:8CFC:3156:B518:2265 (talk) 21:03, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you wish to add that template, you need to put this discussion on talk:Intersex. your talk page is not the place to discuss this. See {{Disputed-section}}, wp:Bold, revert, discuss cycle, help:talk pages and wp:talk page guidelines. BTW: Intersex is not only in humans. Maybe the article should be titled "Intersex in humans"? Please note that blogs are wp:UGC and are not wp:reliable sources. Adakiko (talk) 21:49, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I did add https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Intersex#Inappropriate_content_from_Encyclopedia_Britannica . --2A00:23C5:1203:CE01:8CFC:3156:B518:2265 (talk) 21:59, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the article header very clearly says "This article is about intersex in humans. For intersex in other animals, see Intersex (biology)." --2A00:23C5:1203:CE01:8CFC:3156:B518:2265 (talk) 22:07, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
