Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello 35winds, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your additions to Bruce Trigger have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — 🎆 Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 19:21, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message on my talk page. Please refer to Help:Talk pages for information as to how to use talk pages and user talk pages. I've checked the new version and it's still almost identical to the source webpage, so I've again removed it. Sorry, — 🎆 Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 16:07, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for May 4[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Mark Wood (explorer), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Professional speaker (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 13:01, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, 35winds. I see from your edit summaries that you are talking to Mark Wood about the content of Wikipedia's article about him. Please be aware that if you are talking to the subject of an article you are editing, Wikipedia regards you as having a conflict of interest, and you should not be editing the article directly, but placing Edit requests on the article's talk page. What Mr Wood does or doesn't want in the article is not of great concern to Wikipedia, and should be reviewed by an unconnected editor before changes are made to the article. --ColinFine (talk) 18:33, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

35winds (talk) 15:49, 6 May 2020 (UTC) Hello ColinFine, Yes, of course the page must be reviewed by an unconnected editor. He'd asked me if I'd sort out the page as he was aware that there had been problems with articles that had been posted on the page which were deemed 'tabloid press' and Wikipedia had put banners on the page inidicating that they were problematic. So he wanted them removed. He's not tech savy so he'd asked me to remove them for him. Best wishes, 35winds — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35winds (talkcontribs) 15:49, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted your recent edits. We use wikilinks rather than external links to Wikipedia pages. I see that you were told about this in #Incorrect wiki linking above. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:00, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

35winds (talk) 17:45, 6 May 2020 (UTC) Thank you David Biddulph for reminding me about ColinFine's comments. Apologies. I'll use wikilinks rather than external links to Wikipedia pages next time. I'd also like to remind everyone that I'm not a friend of Mark Wood's and I don't know him. I'm just trying to help someone out who's not tech savy and wants the problems that he's seen on the page resolved. Please let have the chance to provide information with citations, as required by Wikipedia. Best wishes, --35winds (talk) 17:45, 6 May 2020 (UTC)35winds--35winds (talk) 17:45, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As you too are obviously not tech savvy, and as you've been talking to the subject, what you need to do is to suggest changes using the article's talk page, and supporting the suggestions with reference to published reliable sources independent of the subject. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:35, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

35winds (talk) 18:56, 6 May 2020 (UTC) Dear talk With all due respect, Wikipedia requires as a skillset that is gained with time and practice. I've been using this on and off since November 2019. I don't think that it's appropriate to insinuate that I'm not tech savy.....I was a research visitor for several years and I worked with Wendy Hall or if I don't use this code.. Dame Professor Wendy Hall (Professor of Computer Science, Faculty of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton, Head of the School of Electronics and Computer Science). I'll let her know that I've been labelled as "not tech savy". --35winds[reply]

I'm glad to hear that you are going to use "time and practice" to learn. We realise that it isn't easy for newcomers such as yourself. In doing so you can read the talk page guidelines, including about indentation and signatures. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:07, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
