Newcomer requesting help[edit]

Hi Jamie -

I am a newcomer and am feeling a little bit "bitten." I am not trying to post promotional material, but am trying to add to the informational content of Wikipedia. Please advise how I can do this without having it be considered promotional. The material I have referenced in my article is not my material, but is, in my opinion, important information on the psychology of love, perhaps the most important (the reason I contributed it). The current (old) information is very limited, and to some degree inaccurate...

Please help me know how to best contribute to Wikipedia. I would be happy to continue discussions on this with you or other contributors.

Thanks!

How to proceed next?[edit]

Hi Jamie -

I have read the articles you mantioned on advertising and conflict of interest. I believe the article I contributed meets these guidelines with the possible exception that I cited my own website in the "references" as a source to acquire Dr. Bessell's book (it happens to be the most convenient source for that book, since it is out of print and Dr. Bessell is dead). I would be happy to remove that citation.

I support the concept of "neutral point of view," and thought I was writing in a neutral way (still think so). If I was not successful in this, please indicate where I can improve.

It also occurs to me that perhaps you would prefer that I cite other sources, in addition to Dr. Bessell. I would be happy to expand the article in order to do this if it would help.

My purpose is to provide good information. I believe I have good information to share, information that is important to this subject. I will be happy to continue editing my material in order to satisfy your guidelines. Please give me a little more direction so I know how best to proceed.

Thanks!

The section you were adding, aside from seeming promotional, we a bit too long; see WP:UNDUE for an explanation of our policy on "undue weight." In other words, a few quotes or ideas from the other may be appropriate to mention. When adding large sections or making major changes to relatively stable articles, it's often a good idea to propose your edits to the article's talk page first to seek some input from other editors. As far as linking to your own website, that would be a violation of conflict of interest and possibly WP:Reliable sources. Thanks, OhNoitsJamie Talk 19:29, 16 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I will take another approach to this per your suggestions. My plan now is to give brief (one paragraph) summaries of five or six respected sources in order to provide a balanced view. Then I will propose this to the article's talk page (good idea, thanks). Is there somewhere I can post a draft of the article when I mention in on the talk page so I don't have to place the entire article on the talk page? I appreciate your help! 4Xanadu (talk) 17:17, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can post it in your userspace. To do that, you just create a new space as a "subdirectory" of your userpage. I've created on for you here. Cheers, OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:33, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My Draft[edit]

Hi Jamie - I have just created a draft in my workspace (the one you set up for me) per your guidance. Please review and let me know if I am on the right track.

I have two questions:

1. I have been unable to insert the reference indicator in each paragraph using the format prescribed (with brackets like this <> etc.) When I do this, it causes me to lose all the material after that. Any suggestions here?

2. If you are satisfied with the content of this material, at least for starters, how do I initiate a peer review?

Thanks!!

I've made some suggestions on your draft. Cheers, OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:16, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Jamie. I'll digest your suggestions and then ask again how to proceed. 4Xanadu (talk) 10:38, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Revised Draft[edit]

Hi Jamie -

I have revised my draft and incorporated 99% of your suggestions (I lost the cross-reference to the word "genetic" and don't know how to recreate it).

It's clear that you put a lot of thought into your edits, and I really appreciate that!

So now what do I do to initiate a peer review?

Thanks,
