Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Cornelia Frances, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Channel 7 (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Hi. I'm a little confused now about the logic some editors are using to apply WP:BIO1E in this article. The admin who reopened the discussion, A Train, said that the event BIO1E referred to was the media interviews, SMcCandlish said that the achievement of learning many languages was the event. I think that some editors are really stretching the "event" definition to the breaking point in order to apply BIO1E to this article, but don't know what to think because a few editors now have brought BIO1E to the table. Can you provide some insights in the discussion, specially relating to BIO1E and the applicability of "people involved in one event" in this article? Thanks in advance. Thinker78 (talk) 04:57, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

I think I already addressed this at the original discussion (technically at its talk page, here). In much more detail: "Event" doesn't have a narrow definition at BIO1E. It's not explicitly limited to concerts, riots, tournaments, and landslides. Importantly, some very broad, generalized WP:BIO rules are in that section, and are not tied in any way to "events" in the sense you've been thinking (like concerts, riots, tournaments, and landslides), and this proves that the meaning of "event" there is very broadly construed (i.e. something that can be put on a timeline and doesn't expand to such a big chunk of the timeline that the concept "event" no longer makes sense at all). Some examples of the general material:
  • "Editors are advised to be aware of issues of weight and to avoid the creation of unnecessary pseudo-biographies, especially of living people."
  • "It is important to remember that 'notable' is not a synonym for 'famous'."
These provisions are frequently cited in contexts that have nothing to do with events like concerts, riots, tournaments, and landslides.

Further proof of very broad scope/definition of "event" is the fact that that same section addresses small "events" (in various senses) within the life of a bio subject, not just the role of a bio subject within some external event of much grander scope than the individual. So, an "event" can be an entire war (big), a broken ankle (little), the earning of a four-year university degree (little), a controversial Twitter post (little), the public controversy about global warming (big), etc., etc. For this particular case, I'm not sure it matters at all what you want to consider an "event" in the context of Perebal. There's just arguably nothing encyclopedic here. He got written up in a few Guatemalan sources as having learned 6 languages (sometimes exaggerated to 10), but this isn't any kind of record, even in Guatemala, and it was mostly just "gee whiz, this is odd for a guy who's a security guard". There's nothing likely to be lastingly significant about this alleged notability, which seems to be localized.

The overall arguments against the article are WP:N, WP:NOT#NEWS, and WP:NOT#INDISCRIMINATE. You could strike every mention of BIO1E in that AfD, and the deletion case would not be significantly weakened. (By the same token, adding BIO1E doesn't make it much stronger, either, now that I think about it.)

I would agree with what SMcCandlish has said above there. I had a look at the article and I had a quick Google search, I honestly can't see anything that would make the subject notable. It honestly looks like a case of 15 minutes of fame.--5 albert square (talk) 13:53, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Outwith

Ah, you Brits are so quaint. According to my quick online research, outwith is mainly Scottish and northern England. Is it used in other parts of Britain as well, or do you just like it because it sounds so 19th century literary? --Bbb23 (talk) 18:03, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

@Bbb23: I was actually going to look into that word and its usage patterns. Did you find anything good? While it's easy to find a definition, it's not as easy to find the full scope and limits of the usage, either geographically speaking or in sentence constructions.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  19:32, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
I believe I've shared the full extent of my knowledge of the word, but I now know it's not a word I would ever want to be without.--Bbb23 (talk) 19:43, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
@Bbb23: "without" has taken on a more general meaning of "lacking" rather than the opposite of "within" over the years (I use it as the opposite of "within" sometimes and get baffled looks), so "outwith" can come in handy when you want to be clear, though it's not ever so common in my experience. My comment about without was a joke.--Bbb23 (talk) 21:07, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
Haha Bbb23 Yes we are very quaint aren't we! I think it is used in other parts of the UK but not very commonly. Not a word I could ever do without. Just out of interest, why are you looking into this? --5 albert square (talk) 05:24, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Your question at the RfA. I'd never seen the word before. Also, it gave me an excuse to say hi.--Bbb23 (talk) 11:52, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Ah I forgot I used it in Peter's RFA! I'm about to try and use it on Jimbo's talk page - I'll try and use it in an SPI sometime . Oh and hi to you too Bbb23--5 albert square (talk) 16:08, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

June 2018 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2018 News

Welcome to the June 2018 GOCE newsletter, in which you will find Guild updates since the February edition. Progress continues to be made on the copyediting backlog, which has been reduced to 7 months and reached a new all-time low. Requests continue to be handled efficiently this year, with 272 completed by the end of May (an average completion time of 10.5 days). Fewer than 10% of these waited longer than 20 days, and the longest wait time was 29 days.

Wikipedia in general, and the Guild in particular, experienced a deep loss with the death on 20 March of Corinne. Corinne (a GOCE coordinator since 1 July 2016) was a tireless aide on the requests page, and her peerless copyediting is a part of innumerable GAs and FAs. Her good cheer, courtesy and tact are very much missed.

March drive: The goal was to remove June, July and August 2017 from our backlog and all February 2018 Requests (a total of 219 articles). This drive was an outstanding success, and by the end of the month all but eight of these articles were cleared. Of the 33 editors who signed up, 19 recorded 277 copy edits (425,758 words).

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 15 through 21 April, focusing on Requests and the last eight articles tagged in August 2017. At the end of the week there were only 17 pending requests, with none older than 17 days. Of the nine editors who signed up, eight editors completed 22 copy edits (62,412 words).

May drive: We set out to remove September, October and November 2017 from our backlog and all April 2018 Requests (a total of 298 articles). There was great success this month with the backlog more than halved from 1,449 articles at the beginning of the month to a record low of 716 articles. Officially, of the 20 who signed up, 15 editors recorded 151 copy edits (248,813 words).

Coordinator elections: It's election time again. Nominations for Guild coordinators (who will serve a six-month term for the second half of 2018) have begun, and will close at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible, and self-nominations are encouraged. Voting will take place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June.

June blitz: Stay tuned for this one-week copy-editing blitz, which will take place in mid-June.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Corinne, Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Reidgreg and Tdslk.

User "RijonKhan"

This user falsely claims on his userpage to be a sysop of Bengali Wikipedia (I see no such credentials in Special:CentralAuth). His statements about being "with Wikipedia since 2015 but I started contributing in 2008 on Bengali Wikipedia & Meta" are equally false, as I suspect his claims of being a Wikimedia committee member and board member. I am convinced that he has copied another legitmate user's userpage content and passing it off as his own. Don't know if its just incompetence or intentional fraud, but either way I believe this could be grounds for a lengthier block. What do you think? --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 18:58, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't see the notice at the top of your talk page... I hope that you are well. I will ask MER-C to weigh in since he evaluated an unblock request from this same user. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 19:51, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
Impersonation of m:User:Hasive. Should have been indeffed in the first place. MER-C 20:06, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
Ah I came across this one at AIV, didn't have any reason to look at the user page. I'm going to AGF and I'll post a notice on their talk page.--5 albert square (talk) 21:21, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
