Nigerian bobsled

I understand that it has been widely reported that the Women's team has qualified for the olympics. However there was an error that has seemingly "snowballed" out of control. See here for one major media outlet that realized the mistake and correctly modified their story (look down at "clarification"). Additionally please look here for the rules, specifically the time frame for qualifying, and 'Section C' on minimum requirements. Then look here at the appropriate ranking chart. Hopefully you recognize the problem; twenty sleds qualify and they are 42nd, fortunately for them they only need to get to 40th because of the continental representation clause.18abruce (talk) 15:13, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up update. The RSes I was looking at were saying they had qualified. Though considering other Olympics, and the earlier Jamaican team, does IB still have the exception which have no other athletes at any prior Winter Olympics in any sport, which meet the minimum safety standard? Or the other exception about having no other athletes at the Winter Games, for teams that meet the basic standard? The whole thing is rather ambiguous right now. I saw an interview with the driver, who appeared to believe they had qualified, but it was not really clear. Additionally I have received some private messaging that implies that the IBSF ranking list might actually be modified to remove ineligible sleds. My understanding is that they have met the minimum standards for safety concerns (that was the celebration in Calgary where the news first came out), and would qualify as a continental representative as long as they are ranked above the top 40, but I am now unclear on how that top 40 is established. So.....maybe they are as good as qualified but it is not official yet. The IBSF is annoyingly difficult to understand, in Sochi they produced no documentation on how anyone qualfied, in Vancouver they produced detailed lists that cited the rules--but got them wrong anyway (Australia should have been included in women's according to the rules, they had to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to be added as the 21st competitor in a 20 sled competition).18abruce (talk) 18:36, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
