Prop 8 removal

Hi, the statement you removed is documented by the blog entry with a link to a ca.gov website - I think the blog reference provides the context better than a direct link and is worth preserving; would you be satisfied with an additional direct reference to it from the article? --EqualRights (talk) 20:43, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

I still do not think it belongs there for a couple of reasons: 1) The links to the California Secretary of State web site are broken and 2) the blog article has not been through the fact-checking process that a newspaper or other journal goes through so, as with any other blog, its reliability is suspect. If this information is pertinent to the proposition, then I'm sure a more reliable source can be found. This proposition and article have strong opinions on both sides, and we all know that WP articles must have a neutral point of view. Some may think that any issues that the organization may have are irrelevant to the proposition itself, others do not. Some want to put the information in to sway opinion. I don't know enough about California Renewal to opine one way or the other. I think most of the information from the reference does not belong in an encylopedia but rather where it is right now . . . on a blog. Cal Poly Article

Hello. I respectfully object to your reversion of my edit in the Cal Poly article, and stand by my position on the naming of the school. I think we need to differentiate between what the university considers correct usage of the name and, as the first sentence states, what it is "commonly called". It is called just Cal Poly per their style guide and probably by those on the Central Coast. However, those outside of the area, including the CSU system itself, commonly refers to the university as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or Cal Poly SLO. In fact, section 89005 of the Education Code refers to the name "California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo." I do not recall ever seeing it Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo. UC endowment

That is an interesting topic. I just started a thread on the WikiProject Universities project here about the UC endowment a few hours ago. I invite you to review what has been posted and give your own thoughts. However, FYI, I would not assume a 20% increase in the endowment this year. Increases are a function of a variety of things such as gifts, investment performance, and spending distribution. The numbers for 6/30/08 are not out yet, and we should not project what we think they will be based on past performance. I know the Chronicle of Higher Education has already reported that UCLA's investment return was flat for fiscal year 2008. Anyway, hope to hear from you at WikiProject Universities. I did not assume a 20% increase. I was merely trying to illustrate the point that the USNWR figures for 2008 are entirely plausible --and not grossly inaccurate, as some of the other editors have suggested. I have yet to hear a good argument as to why we should reject these figures. Though USNWR has come under a lot of fire for their subjective ranking criteria, I doubt they would simply "fudge" objective figures like endowment fund values. I'm not trying to argue that we should use these values for articles (I will make an argument for this on the Universities project page), but what I'm trying to say is that I think there are plenty of editors that underestimate the credibility of these figures, largly in part, because of the arguments of one (or a few) editor(s). CalState SB

You are right, I apologize for saying you made them up. However, the number from the web site was different than your number (you put 17,000 and the number from the web site was 17,066) and, as I keep asking you to do, you did not provide a reference. Wikipedia has some good guidelines on providing references at its citing sources article. For me, the easiest way to start out was to look at how others did their citations. Take a look, for example, on how User:Amerique did the reference on the CinemaStar closure. There is always some trial and error involved at the beginning, but that is okay. Laie and Honolulu

Alanray, this isn't something that is disagreeable. ALL of Oahu is a part of the City and County of Honolulu - However that is distinct from "Honolulu," which is the CDP covering the central business district. Wikipedia's "Honolulu" is the CDP while the municipality is at Honolulu County, Hawaii. WhisperToMe (talk) 15:44, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

The paragraph says: "Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYUH) is a private, undergraduate co-educational university in the Lā'ie community of the City and County of Honolulu in Hawaii, United States (thirty-five miles from the community of Honolulu)" - by the community of Honolulu I am referring to that place on the other side of the mountains. By the "City and County of Honolulu" that is the municipality, and by Lā'ie that is the community which Brigham Young is located in. WhisperToMe (talk) 15:46, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

I added a comment to the article's talk page. I found out after my edit that the City & County of Honolulu covers the entire island. I still think the reference can be confusing and that some readers will think that Laie is a suburb of Honolulu because it includes the word "city", but because it is technically correct I won't remove it. Thanks for the reference. I think there is a timing difference going on at this article right now. The citation was from 2006, the List of largest United States university campuses by enrollment article uses 2007 numbers, and the numbers you just gave me are for 2008. My Gubernatorial Race

I can understand how you might think that I am not a major candidate, so you deleted me (citing no press coverage). I have filled out the paperwork and it has been received by the Calif. Secretary of State. I am also, the only Republican to have that honor. But, when press coverage is given and cited, you adjust the line further, saying that CSUF's newspaper is not good enough. Where does the line in the sand get drawn next? Must I get the nomination to prove it? Maybe I should win. Maybe that would be good enough.... Furthermore, why didn't you delete the guy on the Democrat side (Aguirre), he didn't have any press coverage? If you're going to edit Wiki, then be consistant. Don't delete me because of your bias.

I understand how you may feel frustrated with Wikipedia policies, but here is the requirement for notability from Wikipedia:Notability (people): Just being an elected local official, or an unelected candidate for political office, does not guarantee notability, although such people can still be notable if they meet the primary notability criterion of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." One sentence in a college newspaper that erroneously states you are the "only Republican running for Governor in 2010" (that will not be the case when the election is closer) is not significant coverage. If the Register or Times picks it up, that is probably the line in the sand. You correcly deleted Aguirre for the same reason. By the way, I happen to be a Republican. Orange Coast College

I've been asked to update/correct the Orange Coast College Wikipedia entry by campus administration. Thus far, I've corrected the founding date 1947 noting its first classes opening in fall 1948, and I've added certificates of achievement degrees. However, I have major changes to make to the history section and, as a new Wikipedia contributor, do this with a fair degree of apprehension.

In order to correct the history, I will need to greatly expand it due to references made by the original contributor. I will also need to strike a good portion of the original entry under the history heading. My references are online portions of the Orange Coast College historical publication, Tumbleweeds to Roses, and portions of the Orange Slices Archives. Tumbleweeds to Roses was written by founding faculty/staff members, and the Orange Slices columns were written by Jim Carnett, who recently retired after serving 37 years as OCC's Director of Community Relations.

My initial question is, considering the size of my anticipated edit, how do I request preliminary peer review of these changes prior to posting?

biased user - Stormrider

The personal control Stormrider is exherting over "Mormonism and Christianity" page is based on his own personal beliefs. He is one of the reasons that wikipedia is a joke. If you try to make additions that he does not personally agree with then he just removes them. He does not add meaningful interaction concerning the disputed addition. I have no problem discussing my edits but that is not Stormrider's method. After I made my additions, he deleted them without any discussion at all even though it has a citation. Also, the additional links were deleted even though there was no POV involved beyond what the sites themselves have. Later when he chnaged the wording for the links, he removed any reference to mormonism which does not acurrately explain the point of the links. One is a former mormon that point is valid to the discussion. Discussing your edit on the article's talk page will bring other editors into the discussion. It will also allow a more detailed review and discussion of the pros and cons to your edit. I would also recommend you review the wording of your edit. Wording such as "the truth about this cult" and "difference between their belief and Christianity" (to name a couple) are opinion and not written from a neutral point of view. I disagree that George Mason University has no notable alumni. If a person has a Wikipedia article, it has been determined that they are notable. However, not all on the list were notable. Ridgecrest, California

Can you explain why the bank information on the Ridgecrest, California page was deleted? I updated the AltaOne link and whammo! It's all gone!

Sure, I'll be glad to explain. First, it was no reflection on your edit at all. The Ridgecrest, California article had become a collection of lists of banks, hospitals, shopping centers, etc. Those kind of lists generally are not appropriate for Wikipedia. Steve McQueen

I think this is relevant to Steven McQueen's page. The article says that McQueen sought unconventional treatment but has casted a bad light on it. If fact, years later, it is shown to have success.

Of note, Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez ( http://www.dr-gonzalez.com ) has been treating cancer patients much better than conventional doctors. NIH even sponsored a clinical trial of 10 patients with pancreatic cancer and their survival rate is much higher than those treated conventionally. SB Valley

You reverted me because of the refrence there included, but if you see the refreced article it said that the valley (must keep reading below) can reach 700 m, and I think that the 700 m its talking about is in Yucaipa (700m = ~2600 ft). House1090 (talk) 21:12, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

A couple of questions come out of this, then: 1) What reference indicates that Yucaipa is in the San Bernardino Valley geological area, and 2) at what elevation does the valley end and the mountains begin? I also have to mention that I think this article would be better just addressing the geological area as it did originally with a hatnote referring readers to the IE or SB County. I would say the Crafton Hills near yucaipa right befor entering the low desert,in banning marks the end of the SB valley. The SB mountains dont begin untill the US national forest begins near Oak Glen, n. San Bernardino, n. Fontana. Yes I added all that info. to the valley article because take a look at the San Fernando Valley article and San Gabriel Valley as well. User: Amerique agrees with you as well. Hi Alanraywiki; Thank you for reversing my category change. I never knew there was a Cal State SB campus in Palm Desert. I should have read the article before I made the change. Now that I know, I do think that a better category would be "Education in Riverside County, California", which is a sub-category of "Riverside County, California". SoCal

How about I change it to ...the population centers around 3 major metropolitan areas, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, the Riverside-San Bernardino Metropolitan Area, and the San Diego Metropolitan Area. Since the 3 metros are in the top 15 in the nation (at least the IE and LA are), better than naming every specific city, like Santa Ana when it usually falls under LA a one city metro.
