Editing[edit]

I'm more than happy to help in any way I can. The great thing about Wikipedia is that anyone who has something (constructive) to contribute is more than welcome to do so. First off I'd like to point out that Wikipedia strives to be a reliable source and consequently, as much as possible, include sources for the material you post using this format: <ref>Insert footnote text here</ref>

Some steps to take when you're editing is to use the 'show preview' button to make sure the edit makes you intent (it'll save you a lot of time and heartache). You can also use your User Page as a 'sand box,' that is test edits out before you post them to an article. You can essentially post anything you like to your User Page, and some of them get quiet elaborate (if you inclined I suggest you troll around a look at some just to get some ideas, some people brag about themselves while others use it to store 'wiki tools' for quick and easy access, it's completely up to you - and on that note plagiarism on User Pages is ok). You should be able to figure out the formatting quickly enough by looking at how other pages are written such as using [[Insert link here]] for links to other Wikipedia pages, [Insert external link here] to link to outside webpages, and for images [[File:image name.jpg|thumb|right|250px|caption]]

I also suggest you click the 'watch' tab at the top of any article you feel you have expertise on (such as the 72 ARS), but one word of caution, please avoid feeling like you 'own' a page. Everyone has an equal right to add constructive edits to any page.

You should be able to get any available unit information from the Air Force FOIA Page, though if you're part of the unit you probably have more access to unit history than the FOIA people will. If you have some extra time you can work with your wing historian to do some unit research or publish some unit information through the command historian. I say that knowing it's an additional duty that has no impact on your operational mission, so I'd really only recommend you do that if historical research happens to be a hobby of yours.

One thing that would really help, in my opinion at least, would be unit pictures. Any U.S. government photo is public domain (unless it's protected under one of the FOIA categories, consult your base FOIA manager if you're not sure but it's generally just stuff that has personal information) so you can upload it on Wiki Commons and link to it from your unit page.

A lot of wikipedia is trial and error, so don't be afraid to make mistakes. Most editors assume the benefit of the doubt and try to offer constructive criticism, so try to take criticism in that spirit and don't get offended (the wiki-jerks are usually weeded out pretty quickly).

Uploading[edit]

Thanks for the info. I did have a question on uploading new photos. We do have the most current versions of our squadron insignias and would like to update the site to reflect those. I have seen the markup that is used to insert a file but I am not sure that I have the correct rights to upload a file to the wikipedia servers. File source problem with File:Grissom Tankers at dusk.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Grissom Tankers at dusk.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged.
