Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Barbara Snellenburg (2nd nomination)

I didn't see the Barbara Snellenburg article before you deleted it, but how is the AFD closed after only one week, where the only contributor already has a topic ban from creating AFDs because of their lack of competence, and is notorious for voting delete based on their own beliefs, rather than Wikipedia policy? Shouldn't it be at best a relist - especially given the previous AFD had four participants of mixed opinions. Nfitz (talk) 23:59, 11 July 2020 (UTC)

@Nfitz: There was no argument against deletion. Now, if JPL had merely left his first "argument" unaltered, I would have re-listed (I generally ignore such "just not notable" statements when closing), but his subsequent reasoning held substance, and therefore consensus was clear. However, if you have sources that you feel clearly indicate notability, I'd be happy to restore it to your user space so you can work on it. P.S. JPL is *not* under a topic ban. Although I often disagree with his methodology at AfD, I have nothing against JPL personally. However, even if I did, I can not and will not allow such things to taint judgement of consensus. There were two compelling arguments for delete, and no evidence given that the topic is notable. I have taken the time to review my close, and I believe it to be correct. If you feel strongly this is not the case, you may take it to Wikipedia:Deletion review or alternatively seek a topic ban if you feel the editor is that grossly incompetent in the area. 78.26 _{(spin me / revolutions)} 13:10, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

I often open about 8 tabs on my browser when closing AfDs, selecting random and those which I may have some knowledge about (this being the former, not the latter!). Question about article on Iolaus

Hi,

I hope i am doing this right. My first talk!

In article on Iolaus ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iolaus ), there is a curious non sequitur:

"Heracles gave his wife, Megara, age thirty three, to Iolaus, then only sixteen years old[5] – ostensibly because the sight of her reminded him of his murder of their three children. They had a daughter, Leipephilene. He was one of the Heraclidae.[6]"

Now, reference 6 refers to the rejuvenation of Iolaus, and makes no reference to Leipehilene. But, the reason I am writing, rather than just edit thr following apparent mistake, or unclear reference, is the fact that the Heraclidae (-idae is a patronymic suffix for "son of") were male heirs, not daughters.

I feel this is a mistake since Leipephilene can not be an Heraclidos and, if "He" refers to Iolaus, that's incorrect also since he was a friend, not descendant of Heracles. Or maybe I misunderstood Ovid.

I tried to look at history (am new to this too) to write a talk message to person who wrote the above but was unsuccessful.

You may re-create this, the topic has not been salted. May I recommend you use the WP:AFC process? If it were to be deleted a third time, it likely would be salted. That way you can get independent, second/third opinions regarding notability, an you don't have to worry about it being deleted while you are working on it. I do have a couple of questions. 1. it says "Dieppa at age fifteen convinced the production group to change the show." Did Dieppa change the show when he was the age of 15 himself, or was the nature of the show changed after 15 years? 2. The editorial by Renowitzky seems out of place. Why not just make that a reference? 3. What is the purpose of the map? It doesn't really seem to give clarity on anything. @Deanna Coakley: I think the map is too generic (just my opinion). You might ask someone at the WP:TEAHOUSE if they know someone who could help you with pin placement, that shows the various locations this festival has been held. I think you need to emphasize Dieppa's age when he composed it. Also I think you need to clarify that there was a series of rock concerts promoted by Zapata, and that the change in the production was suggested by Dieppa but effected by both Dieppa and Zapata, if I have my facts straight. 78.26 _{(spin me / revolutions)} 20:33, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

Request for the text of a deleted revision of an article

Hello! I found you through this article over here of Wikipedia administrators willing to provide copies of deleted articles.

I very much need your help. A few months ago, when I first created my account, it was mainly to work on this page ( List of attacks related to secondary schools). I essentially kept on coming back to the article over the course of a few weeks and made improvements to the grammar, spelling, errors content, and added entries every time. It was changes that objectively just improved the quality of the page.

However, because I was new to Wikipedia, I was stupidly unfamiliar with the rules. So for a few added entities (For ex. the Ugandan School Fire), I copy/pasted the description from pre-existing news articles. I now completely understand this is totally unacceptable and wrong, and I would never do it today. The admin who saw this rightfully reverted the pages, but unfortunately ALL the changes from the past few weeks (90% of which were fine, some of which weren’t even from me) got undone.

I wish to properly re-add the information to the page, but in order to do so I needed access to the 15:52, 21 April 2020 edition of the page (the one lasted edited by Rodw). I will then go through the page and compare it with the currently existing version, and 100% properly re-add the appropriate changes. I believe the only way to get that access is to have you email it to me. The content that I added on the page was legitimately good, I just made a mistake from my inexperience at the time. The quality of the page shouldn’t suffer because I made a very dumb mistake.

@BorderRegions:I'm terribly sorry, I can't help you out on this one. To restore that page, even to email it to you, would be a copyright violation on MY part, and I'm not willing to do that. I realize this must be very frustrating to you, but I have no way of parsing out the "good" edits from the bad copyvio edits. I'm afraid you'll have to re-do this work. I figured it was worth a shot to ask properly (now that I’ve been using Wikipedia long enough know how), but I also understand why it can’t be done sadly. It’s just an unfortunate scenario. Adding Copyrighted Images

@78.26: Hello - I'm hoping all is well. I have several images that I am hoping to include as part of the Wikipedia page I am creating. They do not belong to me, nor have I uploaded them to Wikipedia Commons. I have, however, contacted the owner of these photos and he is willing to grant permission (for their use). I've read through much of the information re: uploading copyrighted material and how to proceed, but I'm still mostly unsure which is the best way to proceed. Should he use the Interactive Release Generator? Should he upload his photos to Flickr and, from there, I'd be able to use them? Should he use the Declaration of consent form? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, kindly.

Jazz discography

It's really cute to archive a page when we're in the middle of a discussion, so I have to come here to continue rather than wait for another one of your magical appearances into my discussions. I wondered if you could answer a couple questions to save all three of us a lot of time—time being the most important currency mankind possesses. 1) Is your Canadian friend going to revert every discography I work on? 2) Is it civil to refuse to answer questions that pertain directly to the subject at hand? 3) Should I go ahead and delete every discography on Wikipedia that's unsourced? Why or why not? It's all the same to me, because I don't have an agenda. I can go back to working Ellen James Society.

I'll try to take these in order:

1. I can't and won't speak for anyone. I rather have my doubts, I don't think discography is a particular interest of theirs.
2. Any editor may ignore or remove any material on their own talk page. They are also not required to reply on talk pages. This is a volunteer project, participation is not required.
3. Unsourced by who's standards? I saw no consensus in that discussion, and at the very most it would pertain to that particular topic, not to discographies in general, as there was no wide participation.
4. My signature is a play on words referencing phonograph records. "spin me" refers to contacting me on my talk page, as in you hear a record by spinning it, causing it to communicate in a sense. It may be an oblique reference to You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) but while I'm certainly aware of the song, as that's not my normal genre of choice, I'm not sure how I came up with that. "Revolutions" links to my change log, this is more of an obvious play since the goal of a revolution is to effect change. Of course the main play is that a record revolves. Perhaps less obvious is that I created that to make fun of myself, as revolutions are messy and often don't turn out very well. 78.26 _{(spin me / revolutions)} 14:40, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for replying. Many people lack the courage to do so. It's interesting that many people look favorably on the word "revolution" when "to revolve" means to go in circles—to achieve no change or progress whatsoever. To flail about hopelessly in a loop. Mag had a problem with both Peter Sprague and Grant Geissman articles, but only Geissman was resolved (I guess?). I deleted the Sprague discog to accommodate her. I guess that's what she wanted, because I've heard no more complaining about it. Is there a source you recommend for 1) discographies 1a) jazz discographies? Is there a method that will prevent them from being reverted? Given that I have been on this site for five years, do you have any ideas about how to resolve the problem of sourcing jazz discographies? Do you mean "whose" standards rather than "who's"? And regarding the idea that standards are relative in this context, maybe you should ask Mag that question, given that she was the one with the problem with how those articles were done. In a long life of experience, reading, and observation, I've been unaware that the term "unsourced" is ambiguous, with multiple ways of being defined. Can you define them? That might help all of us. I don't really know what else to tell you. My own discographical work tends to be early material, pre-1960. So Rust and Kinkle probably aren't of use for your purposes. Does your library have the Tom Lord jazz discographies? That would work for the 60s-90s material. You can see what I did on the Geissman page (I still have a lot more to re-add). As you know, I consider your discographical additions to be self-sourced, and I don't really know what else to say. I agree that "unsourced" is ambiguous. There are plenty of arguments regarding what a reliable source is (and context is important!), and I suppose when it comes down to it we probably have as many definitions of a "reliable source" as we have editors here. That's where discussion comes in and consensus is built. It's been longstanding tradition that discographies source themselves, like bibliographies. However, an editor at Geissman disagreed so in the spirit of compromise on that page I have been adding inline citations. It helps the average reader a little bit in my opinion (but not all that much), so I said I'd do it. 78.26 _{(spin me / revolutions)} 19:59, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Tom Lord's discography lacks release dates, making it practically useless. He could resolve that with a stack of Billboard magazines or a subscription to the online edition. I've always thought comparing a discography to a bibliography is weak because a bibliography contains sources used to write an article or book, while a discography doesn't. It's more like a timeline. Almost nothing in the discography helps to write the article, except the mere mention of name, label, and date. The word "unsourced" is not ambiguous. People like Mag ought to learn something about jazz discography before commenting on the subject. I tried to help Mag with that, but I was dismissed with a snooty wave of the hand, called arrogant, and ignored. I went through something similar with Walter a few months ago when he complained that the Larry Carlton discog was "too long". At least Walter condescended to talk to me. Neither of these people understood, and neither tried. I try. I dig. I don't start from the assumption that I know everything.

The word "unsourced" is not ambiguous. Something is either sourced or it isn't. I wouldn't say "my" discographies are unsourced—I've never thought of them as "mine". I've never thought of any article or subject as "mine". You might recall that I tried to source them with AllMusic, but for three of you that was unacceptable, culminating in my being blocked from this site for a few minutes until another admin came along and set you straight. In the spirit of "consensus" and compromise, I was "persuaded" to do it your (3) way, and I have been doing it that way since at least January, only to be told recently that that way is wrong, too. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Turning the tables might be amusing or pleasurable to those who enjoy schadenfreude, but it's counterproductive to anyone trying to improve Wikipedia. I agree that cite AV doesn't help much—unless one owns every jazz album that has been made, which is impossible. I understand the criticism of AllMusic's jazz discographies, because many contain errors and are otherwise done poorly, but I don't understand the hostility toward that site. I have nothing personal in favor of it or against it—or any other source. A source either contains accurate information or it doesn't. That's enough. All else is speculation. Discogs as a source remains a dilemma. How to source jazz discography remains a quandary. Until those subjects are addressed in depth, unproductive conflict will continue.

Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean about the application running slowly at times. It usually posts a message informing the user that there is a reporting lag when that is the case. It is helpful to get feedback from other people participating in the same network. I think the total edit count is correct, but some of the counters for the component variables are running slowly. I think the monthly edit total is running four days behind. I can't account for why, but that seems to be the behavior of the app for me right now. Again, it's not a big deal. How to do new topic and post it

Champion Records

Hey there, you reverted my edit on Vee-Jay Records and I see now that my edit was indeed incorrect - however, certainly the article must then be wrong when it says 'Ted Jarrett's Champion Records', right? Because Ted Jarrett ran the Nashville, Tennesssee Champion Records, according to his own article. And on top of that, we now still have a link to a disambiguation page, of course. @Lennart97: OK, I removed the reference to Jarrett, and reverted back to Champion, which as you say is a disambiguation page. However, that disambiguation page does mention the "Tainted Love" label. Do you think it would be better if that linked to "Tainted Love" (which has a picture of the label) instead of "Champion Records"? @78.26: Thanks for your response! The Champion Records disambiguation page does mention the "Tainted Love" label, stating that it was distributed by Vee-Jay. What I think would be best, however, is to clearly state on the Vee-Jay article that it distributed Champion Records, and then let any mentions of Champion Records on other pages link to the Vee-Jay article. Do you agree? By the way, I've found no other source saying that Champion was distributed by Vee-Jay than the physical "Tainted Love" vinyl record itself. Is it possible to cite a record? @Lennart97: yes, it is possible to cite a record, I do it all the time. (although usually the liner notes on an album, but sometimes for a discography section I cite the record to itself.) But in this case, there is at least one source which ties Vee Jay to this version of Champion. [1]. I hope that helps. No, we don't have any source that says it was a subsidiary. Vee Jay had it's own distribution network, and it was common for small labels to find a distribution network that they could not set up themselves. It is possible that it was a subsidiary, sometimes are larger company would place the "distribution" notice on a label they owned but wished to hide the corporate relationship for some reason. @Lennart97:, that 1920s version of Champion is a topic on which I have some expertise, but I've never gotten around to editing that article. I can assure you with absolute certainty that this Gennet (and in a second iteration, Decca) subsidiary was never distributed by Vee Jay! Hello Srishresta. I'm afraid there's several problems with your submission. Please note that your topic is a WP:BLP. As such, our sourcing requirements are even more stringent than normal. The source you provided does not even mention Sarthak, and therefore fails one of our core policies verifiability. Additionally, it appears to be copied from a press release by the film company (note the TNN authorship), which would make this source not independent of the topic, even if it discussed Krishna Sarthak in-depth. There are other issues with the reference formatting, but I don't want to give you more than you can deal with at one time. Creating articles is not easy.

Moving drafts to article space

Hi ! I fresh started on Wikipedia earlier this week. Before today, I wrote 2 articles, but they had to be in draft space but, I wrote articles before this, so I know what rules make a good article. Now I do not have to write drafts any more since I passed the 4 days and 10 edits rule with this account. Would you recommend me to move the articles into the article space ? I know this is only 2 articles but, if AFC is backlogged, it is a little help.

When doing patrol work myself I'll mark an article "patrolled" unless there is concern regarding spam or serious concern regarding notability. Republic of Artsakh

Hello. In my opinion, the status of the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh article is incorrect. If the state does not recognize it, the country to which it belongs must also be written in its status. For example, unrecognized Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Transnistria are not like Arsakh in the article. Arsakh's status was written by three non-UN member states. Sorry, is this important? Does it matter? However, they are unrecognized separatist organizations. Even four countries have recognized the independence of those separatist organizations. But Arsakh was not recognized by any state. Excuse me, why isn't the Republic of Artsakh article the same as the 3 unrecognized states article? @Sword313: I know a lot about phonograph records, the music history of Europe and the Americas, and property/casualty insurance. I know almost nothing about Artsakh, so I have no comment. Why have you come to me in particular? In looking at the history there are a lot of established editors whom I trust working on that article. You should be discussing your changes on the talk page, but I would more carefully articulate your position with reliable sources to back you. Catalog numbers

I know why you want to add catalog numbers to albums. It interests you. But you realize that Wikipedia doesn't exist solely for you or for record collectors. That would be a tiny readership. There are about 350 million people in America and 7.5 billion people in the world. It would be foolish to make a rule or follow a process in an encyclopedia that marginalizes most of those people. The truth is, most people are not interested in catalog numbers or matrix numbers or the minutiae of collectors, and when they see them it looks like gibberish fancruft. I was taught in school many times: Know your audience, write for the reader. Your claim that catalog numbers are encyclopedic is self-serving. I know you won't like hearing that, but I also know that you are mature enough to accept the truth and the possibility that you could be wrong. There needs to be consistency from article to article both in form and content. That's true of all kinds of encyclopedias. You'll notice that the other 99% of jazz articles exclude catalog numbers, as do the other 99% of people who work on jazz articles. Should we make a special case for you and a few of your friends? That really would be undemocratic and impractical and contrary to the goals, purposes, and methods of Wikipedia, which exists for all readers, not merely for people who contribute. These facts are easy to overlook. Interacting with IP editors hasn't exactly made me a great lover of humanity.

One other thing. This here? "In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary" is bullshit. It's fake niceness. Most of the time I leave edit summaries. If I don't, it's because the change is self-evident. You should know that after seeing my edits for five years. This part here? "If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored" is bullshit. It's fake niceness. It's arrogant, condescending, and paternalistic. It assumes I have no clue what I'm doing, but I'm getting this bogus reassurance to avoid worry. Oh, thank you thank you. This part here? "If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox" is similar, but throws in the assumption that I'm a child, with the neat analogy to the WP sandbox. In none of my interactions have I talked to people this way. I don't send people boilerplate text. On Talk pages...I... talk. I ask questions, I answer questions, I analyze. You know. Talk. How dare I, right? Although I admit it's faintly absurd to expect people to treat me with the decency with which I treat them, I will very likely continue in that fashion, privileging honesty, directness, plain speech, common sense, and progress, and following the rules.

Catalog numbers are not gibberish fancruft. This is a specialist as well as a generalist encyclopedia. For those knowledgable, catalog numbers give plenty of information about release dates, formats, and who the record was marketed to.
