Totally wrong eh?[edit]

Wider Wigan area is an expression - commonly understood by the common man. Being that there is no citation yet to prove its boundaries I believe this is the best way forwards given that some places listed are not in Wigan, or previously formed Wigan County Borough but no longer do so, or the Wigan Urban Area (it is wider is it not?) or part of the WIDER Wigan Metropolitan Borough (it is also wider is it not?).

I think you are likely to test the patience of the editting community by making further "anti-Wigan" contributions - particularly given they are outside of consensus and still without citation. Jhamez84 20:11, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What the hell is this rubbish about "Skelmersdale being ninety percent Liverpoolers and are proud of their Liverpool roots."? They are either Skelmerdale or Liverpool aren't they using your new-found logic!? Do you even have a source for this or is it just FACT (as you like to use capitals for this word).

JemmyH, I apologise if the above has nothing to do with me, but I do feel I must comment seeing as you made mention of me on Jhamez's talk page. Your point about Skem is basically correct, although the figure of 90% is a little on the high side (I understand this was probably a throw away comment, I'm not downplaying it). There are significant numbers of Liverpool people in Skem and a significant number of Skem residents are the direct descendants (i.e. not Liverpool people themselves, mostly born in Ormskirk) of the Liverpool people that moved there when the 'new' town (i.e. what locals call 'New Skem') was built. I have never contested that Skem is in the Wigan Urban Area, that fact is in black and white. In fact you may remember a little while ago that plans were put forth for the incorporation on Skem into the Met Borough of Wigan, so the link is obvious. Why do Wigan people dislike any 'Liverpool links'?. This fact I'm not currently understanding. The history of Wigan is indeed linked to Liverpool by the construction of the Leeds-Liverpool canal, which facilitated the moving of coal from the Wigan Area to Liverpool. It is also now linked to Manchester due the high number of people who work in Manchester from the town and the areas presence in Greater Manchester. Wigan shares history with a great many places. I'm also not following your point about the 'Satellite Towns'. I very much agree that those from Leigh feel a strong affinity to Leigh, far over and above what they feel for Wigan, in fact a lot never even set foot in Wigan! In Leigh and the areas of the east of the Met Borough Manchester and Salford are also influential, given the proximity and the fact that quite a few Manchester/Salford people now live in areas inside the Met Borough. So Wigan, on that side of the Borough is not as influential as it is to areas in the centre and the west of the Borough. Residents of Leigh almost always say they come 'from Leigh', even to those from outside the area, however in places like Ince, Pem, Orrell, Standish, Shevy. Abram, Platt Bridge, Aspull, Winstanley etc etc, residents say live 'in Wigan' or 'from Wigan' so places that orbit Wigan are 'satellite towns' (if indeed they are towns). I agree that the article may be better making reference to the 'Metropolitan Borough of Wigan', given that to most in the borough Wigan is a 'significant connection'. Thanks. I agree, a lot of peoples opinions about their local areas are the same, but not just Wigan. You're right about the Marks and Spencer thing, I think it was founded in Leeds. I could tell you countless inaccuracies that are believed by people all over the north of England. The point I was making was that given that people born after 1974 in the Met Borough of Wigan or the Met Borough of St Helens or the Met Borough of Oldham, or whatever have put Wigan, St Helens and Oldham in their address, have been run by Wigan, St Helens or Oldham councils, gone to schools in the Wigan St Helens or Oldham school education authorities, seen road signs all around them with Wigan St Helens or Oldham written on them, its not that surprising that they feel some sort of connection to the towns themselves is it Man2 00:11, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Man2[reply]
