Your "request" on my talk page[edit]

Hi! Someone using this IP address posted the following on my talk page: "Hi, this is a school computer and there are many who use this page to find information. Please do not bock us. Sincerly, Svensedammen School Teacher." Thanks for letting us know. First, you should know that I'm not an administrator, so I can't, personally, directly block you. What I and others do on Wikipedia, though, is watch for vandalism on pages. It is not unusual for students using school computers to engage in vandalism. For instance, if you click on some of the above links, you'll see that someone using this IP address added the phrase "im owning the fat ass of you bitches!!!" and removed useful content in the process, from the article Finding Neverland. We, of course, have to prevent that from happening. The basic process is that a number of us use tools that help us find these kinds of vandalism; at other times, the vandalism will just be spotted later by someone else interested in the article. Whenever we spot unambiguous vandalism (for a definition, see WP:VANDALISM), we first revert the changes (so that the article looks like it did before the vandalism), then we make a note on the editor's talk page (like this one). If a particular editor (either someone with an account, or an anonymous IP address, like this one) continues to vandalize, we have no choice but to block the account, because we have to prevent "damage" to the encyclopedia. Please note that when we block someone, especially an IP editor, we usually do so for a limited amount of time (often we start the blocks at around 24 hours). If, after the block expires, if the same address/editor continues vandalizing, we escalate the block lengths. Only in the most extreme cases will we block an address like this one indefinitely. However, at any time, anyone who does want to edit from this address is welcome to sign up for a free account--you don't have to give any information at all other than a username and password. This will allow people to keep editing (assuming the named account doesn't vandalize, of course) even if the IP address is blocked. Details on how to sign up for an account can be found at WP:ACCOUNT.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page, and I'll be happy to help explain if I can or point you to someone more knowledgeable if I can't. Qwyrxian (talk) 10:50, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. While everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, at least one of your contributions, such as your recent edit to John Stuart Mill, did not appear to be constructive and was automatically reverted by DASHBot.

  • Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Note that human editors do monitor recent changes to Wikipedia articles, and administrators have the ability to block users from editing if they repeatedly engage in vandalism.
  • DASHBot produces few false positives, but they do happen. If you believe the bot has reverted your edit wrongly, it is helpful if you report the error so the bot does not make the same mistake again. Please:
