Stress accent of Malayali

Hey, thanks for a cookie! So... I have a question now. As I hear the words like Malayalam, Malayali, Malayala-lipi, you stress the third vowel a (the syllable ya), like Malayalam, Malayali etc. It's like macaroni or Madagascar, so to speak. Or at least they sound that way to my ears. But then, when I see this technical page called Retroflex lateral approximant, someone put an example word "Malayalam" there and according to the IPA there the first vowel is stressed (that is Malayalam, like marmalade). Do you think that's possible? Even if it sounds like Malayalam or Malayali, should I assume that Ma is actually stressed? Or could it be that the sample IPA in Retroflex lateral approximant is simply wrong, by a typo or something? TYIA!! —Gyopi (talk) 10:22, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Okay, then for now I'll remove the accent marks from Malayali, Malaya lipi, and also from Tulu lipi. I still kind of feel there is some kind of "melody" (clear emphasized syllables vs. fast ambiguous ones) in Malayalam, but I think such distinctions are much less important than in a language like English. Yeah, I thought those files were kind of strange. One thing is, in Malayali, a in Ma and a in la are too similar. Another thing is, in Malayala lipi, there is a very long pause between Malayala and lipi, which I felt strange. I assumed the speaker was very nervous and self-conscious when recording (understandable if one has to upload their voice to the Internet), and that was why the words were somewhat awkward. Still the sound files can be helpful, especially if native speakers think the machine voice is not too bad. So anyway, what you tried to say was, you think Tulu uses stress accent? —Gyopi (talk) 09:44, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Malayalam phonology

Thanks for suggesting that we use more sound files for Malayalam. Malayalam script is an article about the writing system, and technically, this writing system is not only used for the Malayalam language. About the sounds of the Malayalam language, we can make a new article: Malayalam phonology. Many languages have this kind of article, for example Tamil phonology, Hindi-Urdu phonology, Bengali phonology. Especially, Marathi phonology has a lot of sound files just like you suggested, which is very cool.

Another thing. How "good" is your sound generator? For example, I think the actual pronunciation of ക്ഷ ('ksha') is 'tsha'. Could it generate this kind of "real" sound? —Gyopi (talk) 09:29, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Good job on the fast reverting of vandalism. You have beaten me several times. One suggestion, though. Double check blanked pages to make sure that they are not new pages blanked by the creator before reverting them. If they are, tag them for deletion instead. Cheers and happy vandal hunting... Did you read what I removed? Do you find it "on topic"? Do you know what a tangent is? Do you honestly find it relevant information?

How is an entire paragraph about Bruce Jenner that deals mostly with his not obtaining the role of 'Superman' "on topic"?

How is a comparison to an unrelated film 'Grease 2' "on topic"?

Why was I accused of "vandalism"? Do I have a history of that?

If I read the article about the American Civil War and I came across an entire paragraph about General Grant's home furnishings should I post in discussion page for consensus about weather if it should be removed or not?

I'm not trying to cause trouble here, I deleted rambling and off topic passage from a page, and I'm warned???

vandalism

I think you are wrong, that vandalism is the threat to wikipedia... the threat is that people will unwittingly believe that THIS website contains valid and truthful information. MANY times, I have corrected pages, only to have a dim witten, know-nothing edit my work so that falsehoods are presented for all the world to see.

It is better than people know that THIS is not a place do do real research, but is only a collection of opinions by people who might or might not know better than a researcher.
