deleting for fun

Seriously how do you even know if what you are deleting is false or not? you deleted three pages within a minute... I'm pretty sure that isn't enough time to tell whether they are legit or not. Quite honestly I'm beginning to wonder about the wealth of information that has been lost to human kind because of people like you who just delete things without even checking to see if it could be real or not. Thats like the church killing anyone who said the earth was round because that wasn't what they thought. Even then they at least knew what they were killing, they knew the idea before destroying it, you on the other hand just destroy ideals without taking a second glance to see if they could be legit or not. This is censorship in its worst form and is very disrespectful. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mahabats (talkcontribs) 04:03, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

If this admin did its job like most do, the articles were probably tagged for deletion by another editor. The WP:CSD tag is the first big clue for the admin. Next, if the admin is lucky or been around, he/she will recognize the editor who nominated it. After awhile, most editors get a sense of "what looks right" or "smells right" (WP:V and WP:N). My bet is on Acroterion. ----moreno oso (talk) 04:09, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
If you're referring to the hoax/borderline attack page you created, "Mobra," be assured that such content is obviously unacceptable on Wikipedia and is deleted on sight. Spare us the lament about deletion of useful content and disrespect. Acroterion (talk) 11:39, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Acroterion

Not sure why I received the warning. How do we test layouts on the site and see them if we can't post them first? Please explain. Thanks!

You posted a hoax about at three-eared rabbit. What did you expect? If you want to test layouts for legitimate contributions, you can use the sandbox, or you can create a sandbox in your userspace, subject to the rules. Acroterion (talk) 15:11, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Reason?

Hello, I am a new user and attempted to create a page about The Balloonanites but you have deleted it due to certain info not given (such as real person or not). I assure you we are real. Please let me know exactly what criteria you are needing to be met. It was stated clearly, I thought, that we are real people so I am confused at the actions taken. Thanks, T.Richman —Preceding unsigned comment added by Darthzartan (talkcontribs) 03:40, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

The issue is notability rather than reality or existence. Please refer to WP:NOTE for the guidelines on notability of people and organizations. Acroterion (talk) 03:42, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

house question

We're trying to find the NRHP-listed Alexander Bishop House in Knox Co., Tenn., and this[1] was the only non-modern house at the address given. Does that look 19th-century, albeit with exterior modifications? Bms4880 (talk) 19:05, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

There could certainly be a 19th century building in there - the kneewall attic and big exterior chimneys would be correct for the time, and clapboards could cover logs or timber framing. Acroterion (talk) 19:22, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

The Famous Baker

Hey!

I was wondering if you could tell med why you deleted the post about the famous baker. Could you help me find the text I wrote?

I'm kinda desperate since I didn't save it!

I advance thanks for your reply. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.166.32.191 (talk) 20:21, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

The article was deleted because the Famous Baker is apparently not sufficiently famous for Wikipedia - see WP:BIO for inclusion guidelines. I am willing to place the article in User:Palmesus/sandbox, if that is acceptable. Acroterion (talk) 20:26, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Please do... Then I could save it and read the bio rules before I post it again.

Deletion of Elliot Noah king!

Why? I am his best friend and everyone at our school wanted to make him one...I'm not attacking him! What makes you think i am? —Preceding unsigned comment added by X-FuGGz-o (talkcontribs) 21:25, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Nobody said the version I deleted was an attack page: the subject simply doesn't meet Wikipedia's guidelines for individual notability, so it was speedily deleted. Your attempt at Articles for Creation could, however, be construed as disparagement (note: school-age children calling each other gangsters is just plain silly). Acroterion (talk) 21:36, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

So if you can send me that in an e-mail and i make it meet the BIO terms? Much Appreciated.—Preceding unsigned comment added by X-FuGGz-o (talkcontribs) 21:25, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

I can email it to you, but it appears quite unlikely that it will ever qualify for inclusion. Being famous in your school is quite far from notability in the wider world. You'll need to enable email in your user preferences first (do not post it on-wiki - it'll be scraped by spammers). Acroterion (talk) 21:48, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Dargan, Maryland

Hi ... I'm in an edit war on Dargan, Maryland with an unnamed participant. Please advise. I only ask because I believe this is from your part of the world. Thanks in advance.--Pubdog (talk) 01:13, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

I took a look at the edits. It is obviously the same IP user editing from two different points. Recommend blocking the IP to the Army base just because so much vandalism has come from that IP and blocking the other IP for 31 hours. I would also recommend semi-protecting the page. - NeutralhomerTalk • 01:20, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I've semi-protected the page and will look at the editor's contributions. I do know Dargan, and Sandy Hook. I believe indoor plumbing is not universal in either place. Acroterion (talk) 02:12, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
What they lack in plumbing, they make up for in music. APK whisper in my ear 02:36, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
That area is about the easternmost manifestation of Appalachia that I know of (apart from certain neighborhoods in Baltimore).Sandy Hook's an interesting place, jammed between the Potomac, the C&O Canal, the railroad and Maryland Heights, with just enough room for 1-1/2 lanes of road and some shallow houses. Dargan's a surprisingly desnse collection of small houses and trailers on the other side of the ridge. Acroterion (talk) 03:24, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

MACEO MAYS

Maceo Mays is a well known author to wit: can be verified. Several attempts have been made to create his bio including any citations and references to attach to his profile to no avail, the information inserted each time have been deleted. Please provide protocol to proceed. Sieberr1 (talk) 20:45, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

You will need to show the subject is notable, provide valid, reliable third-part references, that any and all information you add to the page is verifiable and none of it is original research. At present, a Google search shows very little on "Maceo Mays", so how "well known" the author is is up for debate. If, though, you can meet the the four links listed, then the page has a shot. Please note, continued creation of a page may result in it being salted. - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:58, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
I will note that the first three articles you posted were impossible to understand, devoid of context, and verging on gibberish. I strongly suggest that you review Wikipedia's advice concerning your first article and understand how to write an appropriate encyclopedia article. Acroterion (talk) 21:00, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Further research reveals that the book that you appear to be citing is 48 pages long and published on demand. That isn't enough to establish notability for the author. See WP:BIO for guidelines. Acroterion (talk) 21:11, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Monitor houses

Are you familiar with the idea of monitor houses? As far as I can gather, they're so named because they resemble monitor warships — they're rectangular in shape with an elevated center. I know of three listed on the NR: the Monitor House in St. Paris, Ohio; Tanglewood in Chillicothe, Ohio; and the Josiah Quincy House in Quincy, Massachusetts. Thanks for your help, and please leave a talkback. Nyttend (talk) 01:07, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

It's new to me. In architectural terminology, a projecting, subsidiary structure providing ventilation and sometimes lighting can be called a "monitor" or a "roof monitor", but I never gave thought to the etymology. I personally wouldn't call a set-back attic story a monitor or think that it resembles the warship, but stranger things have been known to be a source of terminology. You could almost call Monticello a monitor house - it even has a rotunda. The White House has a similar set-back attic. Acroterion (talk) 01:31, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
I've not found any reliable sources that explain the etymology; that's my own analysis. While researching to write about the St. Paris house, I found a website (which I can't find now) discussing them somewhat, but it was a commercial website and not likely reliable. Do you know if you could put together enough material to write an article about roof monitors, to which I could redirect monitor house? Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 01:41, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
I'll see what I can find. I have a few sources that might have something, assuming they're not at the bottom of a box. Here's a nice illustration of what I'd call a roof monitor [2]. Acroterion (talk) 01:52, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! By the way, the elevated centers on all three of these houses are square and smaller on all four sides than the rest of the house; if you looked at them from above, you'd get something like this:
 _______________
| |
| _____ |
| | | |
| | | |
| |_____| |
| |
|_______________|

Perhaps other monitor houses are different, but at least these ones don't have rotundas or other rounded or domed elevated centers. Nyttend (talk) 01:56, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Monitors usually straddle a ridge or are centered over a hip - your examples fit the latter case. I quick check of what I have at hand reveals no good sources. I'll look around tomorrow at work. Acroterion (talk) 02:15, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks much for the help! Nyttend (talk) 05:02, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the updates. I'm considering requesting the NR nomination forms for one or the other of these two Ohio monitor houses; perhaps they'd have more information. Nyttend (talk) 19:25, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

You deleted my post on Knio, which I found neither "Vandalism" or "Offensive" Explain. Nbstudios (talk) 16:38, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

We lack a category for "contextless fairy tale with no assertion of notability or sources." I would have said "article about a person with no credible assertion of notability" had the article been written differently. Perhaps you might consider writing it as an encyclopedia article, with sources, a credible assertion of notability and intelligibility for reference purposes? Feel free to start it out in a sandbox in your userspace. Acroterion (talk) 17:14, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Could you please undelete this article? We have received OTRS permission for it which I can add as soon as it is restored. VernoWhitney (talk) 20:19, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

OTRS permission to post advertising? It's not an encyclopedia article and needs to be fundamentally rewritten - in other words, OTRS or not, it would be liable to be deleted immediately on restoration as spam. I'll do it, and not take further action myself, but I doubt it'll last for long. Acroterion (talk) 20:22, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I looked at the text and I'm inclined to agree, but since the deletion rationale only lists copyright infringement which is no longer the case, could it at least be undeleted and redeleted for the other reasons so I can point them to more than one problem with it (and not be the only one for them to complain to, should they be so inclined)? VernoWhitney (talk) 20:27, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
I know what you mean; sometimes one must make a strategic choice of deletion rationale. I'll restore and we'll see what happens. Acroterion (talk) 20:28, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

What's the point?

of deleting Brittany Cooper Day? It's a real thing that is celebrated locally and there was nothing false, lewd, or indecent about the page. At what point do you get to draw the line on what is relevant enough to be included on wikipedia? How many people have to know about something before it makes the cut? And who decides this? I'm disappointed that you think you have the credentials to be the judge of what is allowed on Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Albertoleecho (talkcontribs) 19:07, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Can you point to two or three newspapers, preferably of national standing, that have covered this phenomenon in some detail? Fails BLP1E and notability, and while sourced, fails the spirit of BLP in general. We don't post the biographies of everybody who's been in trouble and made the local newspaper. Acroterion (talk) 20:33, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

flight 175, flight 77, flight 11, and flight 93

The hijackers were worthless pieces of shit that don't deserve to be included into the death toll of innocent passengers and crew. That's why I changed it from including to excluding.

You're unlikely to find much disagreement with the sentiment concerning the hijackers (none here, for instance), but in general the article shouldn't make readers have to do math to calculate how many people, good, bad or ugly, were on the plane. If you feel strongly about it, raise the issue on one of the articles' talk pages, but don't use the article to express your views concerning the hijackers. Question For You (#2)

I am considering making a page for Lewis Stephens, founder of Stephens City, Virginia to go along with the town page. I am finding alot of good information (in the form Google Books) on the founding of the town (which could be used for both pages) but only finding some information on Lewis himself in the form of genealogy sites like genealogy.com and ancestry.com. My question, would these sites, especially ones that people make themselves, be reliable sources? Since some are made by people and not, say an author, they are themselves original research is what I am thinking. I just want to make sure I am correct or incorrect (perferably incorrect) in that assumption before starting in this venture. What do you think? Thanks...NeutralhomerTalk • 06:59, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

In general, user-generated content isn't considered an RS: a certain user-generated encyclopedia we all know doesn't consider itself an RS, and from my personal experience on Ancestry.com, for instance, it's all too easy to find oneself related to Charlemagne, Henry VIII, Leonardo da Vinci and all the major prophets, just because people will jump to the most interesting conclusion. They do, however, sometimes cite sources, which can point the way, but those sources are primary sources. There is a place for the limited use of primary sources on Wikipedia, but mostly as confirmation or for additional illumination, not as a fundamental underpinning for an article. Acroterion (talk) 12:05, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
I kinda figured I couldn't use it as the primary source. Damn. That puts the article at jeopardy cause I can't write all day about Lewis Stephens' founding of Stephensburgh (later Stephens City), but all that could be moved into the Stephens City article. With the lack of sources (literally none) on his birth, death, and life, I am at a loss as how to build an article on him without them. - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:17, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Deletion

Why would you delete Only the Good Spy Young? I won't start a new page, but you've deleted it twice. It's a book by a NYT Bestselling author and you've deleted it as if it is of no importance. Cimorene12 (talk) 00:26, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

The first deletion was of a copyright violation, and the second was a contextless one-line plot summary with a link to a website. It made no indication of what it was or whether it was improtant, and was not an encyclopedia article. You're welcome to create an appropriate article if you wish. Acroterion (talk) 00:32, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Pondering really pointless vandalism...

Thanks for reverting this. I assume it was a test edit more than anything else... I wonder if vandals realise that their efforts usually serve only to draw attention to a page? In this case, the page in question is this one - fantastic userpage, and a reminder that I work with some really creative people. Though I will now have to "waste" some time reading Acroterion and V. C. Morris Gift Shop... Thanks again! TFOWR 07:10, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

I guess it was a test edit, but it would break the bot's execution, so it would have the same effect as vandalism. If you look closely at my userpage, you'll note that I have no Wiki-markup layout skills, and the arrangement can become odd with changing screen windows and resolutions. I've massaged it into something that works for most situations. I found that picture of the VC Morris store a couple of months ago while going through old slides - it needed a fair amount of Photoshop once it got scanned, but I like the way it's cropped. As for acroterions/acroteria, they amount to Greek gargoyles - decorative widgets perched on the corners of buildings. Not nearly as grand as the name might imply, but I like them. Acroterion (talk) 13:09, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Still, much more creative than me! My userpage is cobbled together from bits and pieces I've stolen from other editors, and is very much a menu of quick links to copy and paste. You'll notice I don't link to it in my signature ;-) It was the images you used, in particular, that I was thinking of - some editors clearly have a good eye for images: you seem to be one of them, I'm definitely not! TFOWR 13:29, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words - I did, after all, work as a semi-professional photographer in college, in the sense that I made more money than I spent on equipment and supplies. With digital, I've been making an effort to re-learn how to shoot, and I've been spending more time over on Commons, seeing how other people do it. Acroterion (talk) 13:35, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Deletion on LuxuryRealEstate.com

I'm just curious why you deleted the entry we wrote about our own company.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/delete&page=LuxuryRealEstate.com

Thank you, Michael Edlund —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.10.64.221 (talk) 17:35, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

It was deleted precisely for the reason stated - twice - because it is a copy of the website, which is copyrighted, "all rights reserved",so the re-use of that content is not acceptable on a free-content website like Wikipedia, which uses the Creative Commons CC-by-SA free-content license. Furthermore, it could be equally deleted as promotion, since it is, after all, a copy of web content intended (appropriately on the company's website, inappropriately on Wikipedia) to promote. And third, there is only a very marginal indication of notability according to Wikipedia's notability guidelines for web content. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a business directory or a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Assertions of notability should be backed up by substantial reference to major third-party media, and the article must be written as an encyclopedia article, from a neutral point of view. Copies of a company's marketing are not acceptable. Acroterion (talk) 18:22, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Apart from not making much sense, it appeared to be something you made up. Wikipedia is not a place to start or publicize a trend or new idea: it documents events and subjects that have already received notice in third-party media. Acroterion (talk) 03:59, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

I am reviewing an unblock request related to one of your blocks

The Arbitration Committee has received an unblock request from User:BreadHammer, whom you blocked on July 29.[5] Could you please tell me who you think this is, based on a single edit? If you feel that this information is confidential, please email me or the Arbitration Committee. Risker (talk) 21:58, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

BreadHammer is Marburgh (talk · contribs), who has several abusive sockpuppets editing Sagging (fashion) and R. Budd Dwyer. See the unblock requests for RawTop (talk · contribs) for their attempts to be unblocked previously, and their history for variations on similar unsourced (or not-in-accordance-with-sources) edits. The sockmaster, Marburgh (talk · contribs) has a more extensive history. The sockmaster and socks fit the standard duck test, and three are checkuser-verified by jpgordon. The user tends to insert plausible-looking references to print works that fail to pan out on examination, requiring a significant amount of effort to check. Acroterion (talk) 23:02, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
I don't think Jpgordon specified that BreadHammer (talk · contribs) was the same as RawTop or Marburgh, although there were others; Breadhammer is on a different continent, and has no other similar characteristics checkuser-wise. While I can understand your duck test response, (a) blocking talk pages is supposed to be the exception, and only when there is actual abuse or clearcut evidence that a user will abuse their talk page access; and (b) one of the reasons that Sagging (fashion) has been so popular lately is that it was recently mentioned (by actual url) in a court decision. Would you like to do the unblock, or shall I? Risker (talk) 00:19, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
No problem, I'll unblock and leave a note. Acroterion (talk) 01:53, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, Acroterion; I appreciate it, and I am sure this fellow will as well. Risker (talk) 02:02, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
Every now and then a duck turns out to be a pigeon, to torture the expression, and it's particularly aggravating to block a good-faith contributor from editing on account of an abusive one. Acroterion (talk) 02:10, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Account creation blocked?

I've just blocked Hindisoft as a spam-only account, but after I did it, I wondered whether I'd gone too far. Do you think it reasonable to block account creation for spam-only accounts that don't engage in other vandalism? Talkback, please. Nyttend (talk) 12:00, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't block account creation for most spammers, believing in redemption, but I do where they show an unflagging determination to spam and present no indication that they are here to improve the encyclopedia. I would have blocked account creation in this case myself - spamming multiple products is bad, even in userspace. There appears to be no intention of creating anything encyclopedic. Acroterion (talk) 12:12, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
Okay, makes sense; thanks for the advice. Nyttend (talk) 12:24, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Bearded Theory Festival Page

Hi Acroterion,

I have recently wrote an article about a festival that I have been to about beards.

The red bit says I need to talk to you as my submission has been deleted.

I have had a go at re-creating the page, with the proper references attached at the bottom.

Which can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Bearded_Theory_Festival

Please let me know if I need to amend any of it.

Many thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamonkey1982 (talkcontribs) 20:40, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

It's promotion and doesn't indicate notability. You need to write an encyclopedia article, not a marketing release, and it needs to clearly establish how the event meets Wikipedia's general notability guidelines as well as staying completely clear of even a hint of promotion. Acroterion (talk) 21:31, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

I notice

that you cut the Fisher Building down a notch in importance. The building does make Bayers book on deco worldwide [1] suggesting that it does in fact ("facts on wikipedia being those things that we can source) rate worldwide attention. Einar Carptrash (talk) 01:46, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

  1. ^ Bayer, Patricia, ‘’’Art Deco Architecture: design, decoration and detail from the twenties and thirties’’, Thames & Hudson, London 1992 p. 96
I would certainly call it significant, but it isn't on par with the Parthenon, the Houses of Parliament or other iconic structures, which would rate "top" billing (the Parthenon's only a "high", by the way - I haven't bothered to change it). The point of rating the importance of the topic is to try to direct encyclopedia-writing efforts to those topics that are most in demand. The project rating's mostly just an internal encyclopedia housekeeping matter and not something I'd argue much about, but the top rating should be reserved for buildings and topics that have had a major impact on culture and design worldwide, that are instantly recognizable to laymen. In other words, profoundly influential on a global basis. Having said that, it's easy to introduce a Eurocentric systemic bias into the process, but it's still just part of the means to organize the encyclopedia.
Being an excellent example of a style would imply a "high" rating, as I don't see the Fisher Building as particularly influential or well-known outside of the US. "High" is still pretty good. I was mostly weeding out what appeared to be copy/pastes of the templates that had misattributed ratings. Most of the Italian Renaissance building articles had no project assignment at all, which is a crying shame - these were buildings that appear in every textbook on architectural history. Acroterion (talk) 02:03, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. You probably gave a better answer than I deserved. I will admit to not particularly liking all the classification tags (or whatever) that appear on the talk pages - wondering if there are editors who actually follow up on them. I agree that the Fisher should not rank higher than the Parthenon. Where do I go to see all the structures listed as "top." Carptrash (talk) 15:22, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
No need to apologize, I'm glad somebody's paying attention. WP:ARCH has a matrix showing articles cross-referenced by rating and importance, down near the bottom of the page. I'm not very pleased by some of the classifications or ratings - I have somewhat higher expectations for B class than other editors, apparently, but it's at least a rough way to organize things. Acroterion (talk) 22:38, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Question: (long version) I've been poking around the link you provided because normally I don't hang out at those places. I clicked on a random building in a low priority group and landed at 33 Liberty Street. I am quite familiar with the architects, York and Sawyer, and notice that they are mentioned in the infobox but not in the main body of the text. I feel that they should be, but is that considered to be redundant? Carptrash (talk) 14:29, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

I'd get them into the body of the text, particularly if they have a blue link. I don't see that as redundant at all - the infobox is just a quick summary for those with short attention spans and a need for colorful graphics. Acroterion (talk) 14:39, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm just one state away from the Fisher Building, but I doubt I've ever heard of it except while downloading the list of NHLs in Michigan, and when I saw this thread, I hadn't any memory of hearing of it before. Nyttend (talk) 04:07, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

I was once driving through Ohio, going from Boston to Michigan, on an H. H. Richardson pilgrimage and I was wiped out, having driven all nite, done Pittsburgh etc, and was looking for a place to regroup before making the final run. I pulled into a rest area looked at a map and noticed the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial located, as I recall in Niles, Ohio. So I went into the gas station where a bunch of locals were hanging out and asked them if it was worth going to. The Alpha male looked at me and said, "I've lived here all my life and ain't been there so I can't be much." A kid standing there said, "Actually it's pretty interesting." So I went and It turned out to be a McKim, Mead and White structure with extensive sculpture by J. Massey Rhind etc. Put another way, I am never that impressed with the "I've never heard of it so it can't be important" argument. Acroterion's argument, on the other hand, worked just fine. Carptrash (talk) 18:26, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Four over four construction

Have you ever heard of a "four over four" style of architecture or construction? The farmhouse at Ohio's Goll Homestead was built in this style; all I can learn from the sources that I've used on the article is that it employed French and German methods of timber construction. As well — since these styles appear to be used by average people, I've linked "four over four" to Vernacular architecture; do you think this a good idea? Talkback, please. Nyttend (talk) 04:09, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

From what I see in the picture and the article, it looks like a predecessor to American Foursquare, which of course is a turn-of-the-twentieth-century style used in framed construction. It could be a local style of farmhouse suited to the local climate. The I-house is a typical farmhouse, two rooms over two rooms across the front, with a tail attached to the back one or two rooms deep. One might want a more compact arrangement that is better-adapted to winter conditions with less surface area per square foot, which may have become locally common in Ohio. In any case, the link to vernacular architecture is a useful placeholder.
I still haven't turned up much on monitor houses, I'm afraid. Acroterion (talk) 17:37, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Okay, but I'm confused, because (1) the American Foursquare article sounds like houses bought from Sears catalogues, and (2) the description of this house doesn't sound at all to me like such houses. I suspect that I'm missing something, however. Forgot to say — the profile of the homestead from the Ohio Historical Society has a much better picture than the one I took; perhaps you'll be able to gather more information from it. And thanks for the continued efforts on monitor houses; perhaps I'll just request the NR nomination forms for the two such houses that I've found. Nyttend (talk) 17:41, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Hey, could you take a look at the August 7 entry for Peter Stephens on DYK? I think it was overlooked and don't want it to fall through the cracks. Thanks and Have a Good Day...NeutralhomerTalk • 14:16, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

The article looks fine, you've gotten it over DYK size. The hook's not the strongest I've seen, but that's what you've got to work with. If it's picked up, it will probably take a couple of weeks - there are a lot of DYKs in the mill right now. Acroterion (talk) 14:27, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Oooh, I thought it took a couple days. DYK noob, I am. :) I thought about strengthening the hook, but really couldn't think of a way to. Oh well. :) Thanks for taking a look. :) Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 14:33, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Another reference desk-style question

Immaculate Conception rectory one
Bredeick-Lang one

I've encountered two different houses here in western Ohio that the National Register lists as "Italian Villa": Immaculate Conception Rectory at Botkins and the Bredeick-Lang House. As you can see, I've classified the rectory as Italianate; I'm currently writing an article about the B-L House, and I plan to do the same with it. Is this an accurate classification, or is there some sort of difference? Unfortunately, we don't have an article about this topic; Italian Villa is a redirect to Roman villa. Thanks, and talkback please. Nyttend (talk) 01:48, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

They're both Italianate. I'm not sure what "Italian Villa" would be other than that. Acroterion (talk) 01:51, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Okay, just wanted to ensure I wasn't overlooking something obvious. Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 01:54, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Hmm, they both have brackets under their eves, which is part of Italianate styling, but otherwise i don't see it. The brick one has a gothic style peak at the front of its roof line. Neither have window-frames rounded at the top. I've come across "Ital." as an abbreviated description of architectural style in a description for buildings in a historic district recently, and am a little bit wondering if there are Ital. styles other than Italianate around. Nice pics! --doncram (talk) 02:36, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
A shallow roof pitch is diagnostic, and few houses are pure examples, or are devoid of eclecticism. Acroterion (talk) 02:58, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
okay if u say so. i meant the red one having the peak in front; i guess they both may be brick, too. fine-looking places. --doncram (talk) 04:55, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
There are some Gothic Revival bits on the red one, for certain, but I'm going by the overall massing and proportions. Acroterion (talk) 11:24, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
There's another usage of "Italian Villa" wording in a NRHP nom for Union Green Historic District, but the building in question, in photo #5 of accompanying photos, seems like straightforward Italianate. I like that it has a couple rounded window tops, besides the 2 story walls up to a flat/shallow roof with overhang and brackets. I guess we can usually just replace "Italian Villa" wording in NRHP docs by "Italianate" and link to Italianate architecture. --doncram (talk) 19:34, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Re: Congrats!

Thanks! :) It was tough work, which isn't quite over yet, still got TFA to go, but it is almost done. Then I am onto other articles to create, work on, and take to GA status, then FA. Thanks for your help on this and I look forward to working with you on my future articles in the, well, future. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 04:06, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Re: Revisions to Boyd Avenue

I own a home on the street.

A young man just tried to hang himself on the street. He lost $70K when his home couldn't be sold for the value it would have previous to this. This was just a week ago.

Nothing stated in my draft was inaccurate.

The local newspaper and city council will verify that ONLY 1 Homeowner on the entire street supported the historic district zoning.

They can also verify that NOT ONE CENT of the promised GRANT money has been distributed, despite dozens of applications for the same.

It's easy to carry the "official line" but the truth seems a hard thing to find on Wikipedia.

One of the City Officials charged with enforcing the new guidelines on district homeowners, made the front page of the Martinsburg Journal when it was discovered that he had multiple unregistered rental homes ( all substandard ) and which when complaints were made outside the city of Martinsburg, they were inspected by county officials - and found not up to minimum rental standards.

That official prevents homeowners from even painting the trim on their houses....but fails to follow basic requirements to rent to human families.....yet the City Fathers didn't terminate his employment.

Sometimes...what is written only seems biased, when in fact, it's only the TRUTH. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Taxpayer101 (talkcontribs) 16:40, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately, Wikipedia isn't a good place to try to right great wrongs. All material on Wikipedia must be verifiable from published reliable sources. This is essential to prevent the encyclopedia from becoming a battleground between opposing opinions, wills, and individual perceptions of the truth. Artlcles on Israel, Northern Ireland, George W. Bush and Barack Obama would become hash i this principal wasn't enforced, but it applies throughout the encyclopedia. We cannot allow an article to become a coatrack for opinions or beliefs on matters tangential to the primary subject. Please review our policies on undue emphasis, recentism and WP:NOT#NEWS for more insight into these and other matters. In a nutshell, if it hasn't been published in a reliable source, it can't be included, and a given subject must not appropriate the article for other means, or overwhelm the primary topic with matters relating only to the present, or with tangentially-related material. Acroterion (talk) 19:16, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Thank you

I understandyour point of view.

I would like to point out, however, that none of the houses ( save for Aspen Hall ) predates 1923. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Taxpayer101 (talkcontribs) 20:56, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for reading all that through; there's a lot of policy to digest.
As far as the pre-1923 business goes, the Park Service guidelines for historic districts and properties set a 50-year horizon, so at the moment, anything before 1960 could in principle meet that criterion. There are quite a lot of historic districts around the country that cover the 20s and 30s, and increasing numbers of 50s districts. As far as restrictions go, they are imposed (if any restrictions are in fact imposed - NRHP in and of itself carries no controls or restrictions) by local governments at their discretion as planning and zoning districts, with the caveat that any tax credits claimed for NRHP-designated properties are administered according to federal guidelines, as interpreted by the state historic preservation offices. Page review/avoiding conflict of interest

Hi Acroterion - I was hoping to create an page for my company, BuyerZone, and I notice you deleted the previous version a while back -- which was completely deserved. I've done some research and written a sourced, more neutral version of the article. Could you take a look and let me know what you think? I'm sure we can satisfy notability with the articles from USA Today, Mass High Tech, and BtoBOnline that are referenced in there, but of course as an employee I've got a conflict of interest to avoid.

The draft is on my User page. Respond here or there, whatever is easier. Thanks. Snackwell (talk) 21:16, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Well, a conflict of interest doesn't preclude editing, it just means that one must tread carefully, which you appear to have done. I think it's neutrally written and demonstrates notability, so I see no real problem with it. Acroterion (talk) 21:19, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Great, thanks for the feedback. I've created the page and will watch for any feedback. Snackwell (talk) 21:55, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

A question

I have a question if you can answer. I have two User pages and I don't need one so I wondered if I submit a request to delete one user page, it will be everything completely removed. I do not think of my contributions because I know that they will remain, but I think of everything else, such as my revisions from articles, my upload log, my talk page. Thank you in advance. Corey.7.11.1992 (talk) 1:15, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Can you give me a link to both? All logs, talk pages, revisions and such will remain in any case because that's how Wikipedia's copyright attribution system works. I looked at your other conversations with admins (you really shouldn't canvass that many people by the way), and "making mistakes" in editing is not a reason for deletion or redaction of revisions. We all made mistakes when we were new, nobody cares or worries about that. Don't let it bother you. Your userspace subpages and your userpage can, of course, be deleted at any time if you wish. Acroterion (talk) 16:52, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

I know that and am sorry for everything because I only wanted to somebody delete revisions from upload files where I was made a lot mistakes when I came to Wikipedia because it annoys me horribly, and every time I enter to Wikipedia I think about it, and now when I have a opportunity I'll will ask you if you really really can delete revisions of these files (this and this). I would be extremely grateful to you because I know that is impossible to delete the revisions from actual articles, but these are not actual articles, they are upload files. If you can't delete then I will simply delete my User page and end of story. And alerts you when I wanted to delete all. Thank you again. Corey.7.11.1992 (talk) 19:46, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Survey on gender

Hi! I'm Liria Veronesi (User:Akoha77) and, together with Paolo Massa (User:Phauly), I'm starting an empirical research on "Gender and votes in requests for adminship". For this reason, we need to know the gender of Wikipedians who were candidated to become admins.

We tried looking for the templates User:UBX/male and User:UBX/female but only 4 admins use it. We also used the API for getting the gender field in the profile but, out of 1744 admins, only around 400 have filled this field. But we would benefit from a larger coverage, i.e. possibly knowing the gender of 100% of candidates.

So, after asking for advice to 3 admins and receiving 2 positive replies (1 and 2), we decided to try to ask directly to Wikipedians.

Thus, would you be so kind to write your gender [Male / Female / Other], together with a text comment if you want, on my talk page at User_talk:Akoha77? If you prefer to send me this information privately, you can send me an email, the information will be kept confidential and never shared.

Thanks! Akoha77 (talk) 12:50, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Band

Hi.

How do I make an article about a band significant?

If a band exists, I do not see why it can not have a wikipedia page to specify even the littlest bit of information about the band, incase any interested people might want to read it. Is not that the whole point of wikipedia? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Graafmachientje (talkcontribs) 23:52, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

What better prove of the existance of a band, than music clips of original songs made by the band? That is my main source for my article.

Existence doesn't qualify for inclusion. You can't make a band significant - it must have received significant independent notice in the press. As previously suggested, please read WP:BAND for the inclusion criteria. Acroterion (talk) 23:55, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Wait, so you are mature enough to give me the greatest argument ever: we have enough real bands so please, no imaginary bands? What am I supposed to do then, upload this under the description of a musician? will that do? and please dont ask me for better prove of the existance, theres multiple videos with songs right on youtube under this very name, it exists. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Graafmachientje (talkcontribs) 23:59, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

For the third time: have you read WP:BAND? While you're at it, please read WP:NOTE for the general notability guidelines. You will need to frame any argument for inclusion within those guidelines. So far you haven't shown that you understand or have applied those rules. Acroterion (talk) 01:31, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Only corrupt government scientists insist that nano-thermite wasn't used on 9/11. Is that what are, perhaps? Or are you just another Pentagon lackey. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.230.210.59 (talk) 01:13, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Your assumption of good faith is noted. Stop edit-warring. Acroterion (talk) 01:15, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Ummm... wow!

I filed an ARV using TW, and the page hadnt even finished reloading when you'd already taken care of it! Just wanted to say thank you for being so quick in a generally thankless job!!! Best, RobertMfromLI | User Talk 02:02, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Well, actually I'd blocked them and their sockpuppets a couple of months ago, so I can't take credit for speedy dispatch on that one. Acroterion (talk) 02:14, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Sorry about my change to the René Descartes article. I slipped. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.199.76.146 (talk) 00:58, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Deletion Complaint

My page "Taavon Calderhead" who is an existing, popular character throughout the U.S. has been deleted due to false claims of nonsense, which is explained by the nonsense of the character. If the page will be returned, I will note that he is a Fictitious character, not a nonsensical article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MistaShizz (talkcontribs) 02:42, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

User:C.Fred‎

A changing IP has now tagged him three times. I think a sock is at work. ----moreno oso (talk) 03:16, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

So I see; I semi-protected his userpage, and the IP's editing from a very narrow IP range, so I may try a modest rangeblock if they offer more data points. Acroterion (talk) 03:18, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
I noticed that small range. Wonder what got under its skin? I think it's a sock. ----moreno oso (talk) 03:19, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Reverting all edits

Why is it that every time I make an edit, you always have to mark it as "unconstructive" and revert it? 74.241.108.70 4:45 September 17, 2010 (CDT)

The above was made by User:70.156.100.93. - NeutralhomerTalk • 21:48, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
You might want to show some examples of what you are talking about. Both accounts show no edits outside of this, your talk page and Dubai. - NeutralhomerTalk • 21:50, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Back, but not very awake

Welcome back! :) Don't worry about not being awake. I am pretty sure some people have a process where they edit while asleep. :) Just gotta hone those skills. Glad to see ya back. Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 18:33, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Much worse than editing an online encyclopedia while not very awake, I'm writing proposals while not very awake. Thanks for looking after the items above, I've lost track of which IPs were represented. Acroterion (talk) 18:44, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
No worries. That's what I am here for. :) If you need help with your proposal, please let me know and I will try my best to help. Take Care....NeutralhomerTalk • 18:48, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Your trip

Nice to see the pictures you got from your journey :-) Did you get into Park County, Wyoming, and if so, did you get a Mummy Cave image? Nyttend (talk) 04:13, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Yellowstone was very congested. We didn't make it to the East Entrance, so no Mummy Cave pic. I got several dozen other NRHP pix in Blaine County, Idaho, around Glacier NP and in Teton County, Wyoming, but the sheer number of possibilities and the limited time for scouting places took its toll. There are several places I now realize I should have shot, or was almost on the scene, but those are the breaks. I have about 3200 images, maybe 700 to 900 unique shots, selections from which I'll gradually upload over the next few weeks. Acroterion (talk) 04:20, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Troy Nickerson

Why did you delete Troy Nickerson? There is a stub on which linked to a non-page for Troy Nickerson. I took the time to gather the data for Nickerson's achievements in wrestling, and provided 2 references (one to his HS achievements, and 1 to a page showing his achievements in college). You deleted the article out of hand for "lack of references". Please undelete. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TobusRex (talkcontribs) 04:21, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

I deleted the article because the article made no assertion that the subject was notable according to Wikipedia's notability guidelines for individuals, not for lack of references (which was the proposed reason for the deletion that was advanced by the editor who tagged the article, which I did not act upon in this case). While Dubuque, as a national champion, is probably notable, runners-up would not be, unless they've received significant coverage in the press (not in lists, but in articles in the national press that focus primarily on them). See also Wikipedia:Notability (sports). Acroterion (talk) 04:29, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

In actuality Nickerson is probably the more notable wrestler for a variety of reasons. Nickerson was a 4x All American, whereas Joe Dubuque wasn't. Also Nickerson is notable as well for being a National Champion, the same as Joe Dubuque. Also the article I wrote provided alot of information regarding Nickerson, including his HS career, college career, and what he is doing now, which could be of interest to the general public, especially if Nickerson decides to try out for the Olympic team in a couple years. Frankly it's a fairly complete article, and certainly better than the blank page the Dubuque article linked to. Thanks for the reply. TobusRex (talk) 04:50, 25 September 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by TobusRex (talkcontribs) 04:43, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

The article doesn't make that clear, and in any case, I see no indication of compliance with Wikipedia:Notability_(sports)#College_athletes. If and when he becomes a member of an Olympic team, that would make him notable, but not before. Acroterion (talk) 15:34, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Nice pics

I was reviewing your uploads at Commons...nice work...I like this one a lot--MONGO 23:28, 26 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, more where that came from, and I'll get to mountains soon. Buildings are a nuisance when you're shooting against the light, or there are trees, or power lines. Acroterion (talk) 00:34, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

SPI on Patpettit

As the admin who closed the CSD on Jim ragonese I thought you would be interested in the SPI I have opened about the author. I strongly suspect based on account creation times and the way that the other new account and IP address all jumped in on relativeley the same page and mentality. Thanks Hasteur (talk) 15:04, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

Agreed. I've salted the topic, for what it's worth, and am inclined to block the lot as unlikely to contribute anything of value here. Acroterion (talk) 15:09, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

Funnyjunk

Hello Acroterion,

I'm a senior member of a site called Funnyjunk.com. You have banned the creation of a page for this, reason being: Relentless spammer. Understandable, and now I'm asking you to open this for creation again, so me with the help of other users can work on our page.

My reasons to unlock the page are the following:

1) Funnyjunk is a popular site which allows users to upload funny content to the site, in the form of a picture, animated GIF, or a youtube video. Thousands of new pictures/videos are added daily. The content is voted upon using a thumbs up/down system, and what gets the most thumbs achieves "Front Page". (We have been using the thumb system long before youtube decided to incorporate it.

2)Thousands of new pictures/videos are added daily.

3)The site has many new users signing up daily.

4)The site has it's own community with allowing IM messaging between users and also an Email format of messaging

5)We're a unique community with our own inside jokes, and our own senses of humor.

I see no reason that this article should continue to be locked, so please consider this.

Thanks in advance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fatality War (talkcontribs) 22:08, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

The article was locked because people were repeatedly creating two-line articles verging on vandalism. I'll remove the protection. You will want to review advice on your first article, notability criteria for websites, and the general notability guidelines in order to write an article that satisfies the inclusion criteria. You should indicate notability by reference to notice in major third[party publications - the items you listed above have no bearing on inclusion on Wikipedia - we solely deal in notability as established by independent media. Bdel965

Please take a look at User Bdel965. He has been warned three times to stop vandalizing the Congressional Black Cacus page. For amusement, you might want to look at his only other edit. Paul, in Saudi (talk) 10:16, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

I've provided more rope given them a final warning. That first edit is entertaining too. Acroterion (talk) 12:05, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

how do you put the copyright on the picture? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Leer5454 (talkcontribs) 00:39, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

When you upload the image, you have a selection of licenses you can use in the upload dialog page. Alternatively, there are several tags you can use. However, in this case, you uploaded an image from the Internet that is plainly copyrighted - "All content © 2010 Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick", so absent permission received by Wikipedia directly from the PCPNB, it must be deleted. As a free-content website, we can't host copyrighted images, and fair-use images of living persons are almost never permitted. Acroterion (talk) 01:07, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
