Best Foreign Language film

Hi. Thanks so much for all the new info on the long list. I've been waiting patently to know about it. Wikipedia is the only place I know where to find these information. List of Japanese submissions for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film

Hello. I recently created the aforementioned article, and am looking into bringing it to WP:FLC. I've used the lists you've made of yearly submissions (good work on those btw) to populate the list, but I still need the submissions for 1957-1960, 1962, and 1966. Also, I've noticed that there was no submission from Japan according to Submissions for the 47th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, which you made. Is this the case? Per the comments at the article's FLC nomination, I need a source that lists the nominations (or multiple sources thereof). Do you have a web source, book, or similar (if necessary, it can be a Japanese source, just has to be reliable and verifiable) that lists them so I can use it as a source? Also, could you find a source with a list of submissions similar to one you showed me for the Japanese submissions list? Again, even if it's in Italian, that's fine. 80th Academy Awards submissions concerns

We don't cover everything that receives press coverage or cover everything in an exhaustive manner - see WP:WEIGHT. The British film controversy is probably more relevant to whatever film page it is on, and as there was no submission, it's not listed here and is outside the scope of the list. The Taiwanese, Indian, and Israeli submission issues are mentioned in the lead. I couldn't find any sources on the Bolivian nominee for inclusion in the article (and also note that if you want to find a source - it has to be verifiable and reliable, sourcing blogs, other Wikipedia entries, or similar isn't enough). And do note that Wikipedia isn't for specialized viewers of whatever subject - it's for a general audience that is provided a summary of the subject for them to understand, as it's an encyclopedia. Oh, and don't add mass IMDB links. It violates WP:EL and WP:NOT#LINK and is simply excessive. I will revert any such inclusion. Regards, Sephiroth BCR ^(Converse) 10:35, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

I hope I am doing this right. I've never used USER TALK before except as e-mail.

I made some changes and I am hopefuly we can come to a compromise. I've spent a lot of time on these pages and while I agree they can be improved, I would really hope that we don't have to gut them.

1. First and foremost, I think the Bolivian mention absolutely must stay, and I have included a link. I believe the link may be a blog, but it is a direct quote of the La Paz article I read last year while compiling the original page. The newspaper does not appear to have an archive. During the long history of the award, there have been so many great films DISQUALIFIED from contention due to technicalities- The Vanishing, The Band's Visit, Red- etc. For the watchers of this category, it is extremely relevant to include disqualified films. 2. I have shortened the section on the British controversy and hope you find it acceptable. This was quite big news in the British film industry, and since this is a list of submitted films, these films WERE SUBMITTED in response to an open British call for entries. This tidbit is therefore very factual and relevant; much more so than the long section at the beginning mentioning that "4 Months" and "Persepolis" failed to be nominated. 3. To be honest, I find it offensive to list so many sources claiming that "4 Months..." should have been nominated. Perhaps it should have, but this is very subjective. I'm sure you could find sources on the web claiming that a dozen films on the list were robbed by not being nominated (I'm partial to the Estonian film). However, because this was much reported in the press I am happy to let it stay. 4. I think listing languages is very important. (this is Best Foreign Language Film, after all) and it subliminally emphasizes the fact that English-language movies are not allowed. 5. This is a small point, but AMPAS recognizes the country as KOREA and not as SOUTH KOREA. 6. I think it is very interesting to note which major countries did not submit from year to year. Why do you disagree? Again, this can be shortened.

Again, I thank you for your help but I have spent a long time on these pages (they are the only wikipedia pages that I maintain, and I had hoped to expand them this summer, as I mentioned to you before) and I would greatly appreciate some control over the content.

The source you gave for the Bolivian submission is a blog and doesn't pass WP:RS. There's no need for separate sections - whatever tidbits are present are covered in the lead. The British nomination, is again, more appropriate to the article of whatever specific film they wanted to nominate. You even point out that the films weren't even submitted, which puts it completely out of the scope of the list. If you want to insert the information, then put it on the relevant film articles. As for the films that I mentioned, they're the ones that had the most press coverage and controversy, and I included them for the sake of comprehensiveness within the scope of the list. I kept your additions of the languages though. As for how the Academy recognizes South Korea, it really doesn't matter, as it matters how Wikipedia recognizes the two countries. Furthermore, it screws up the sorting if you move it up to the "K" part. As for why I'm disagreeing with the additions, it's because there's an extent where summary is appropriate and a point where we drift into covering a topic too exhaustively, which is giving undue weight to a particular part of the topic. For instance, listing every single country that didn't submit is excessive and undue weight - a reader doesn't need to know what films weren't submitted; the purpose of the list is to show the films that were submitted. I realize that you spent a lot of time on these pages, but on Wikipedia, no one owns any of these pages. Anyone is free to edit whatever they see fit so long as they stay within Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and follow consensus. If you're going to submit here, then you should expect people to edit your work; if you disagree with this, then this probably isn't the right place for you to be editing. Your curt responses are very disappointing. I was extremely happy to help you with the pages you were editing, and I was very happy to find someone with interest in this category.

I respectfully request that you allow the following four items to remain on the page without deleting them: 1. The disqualified Bolivian entry. Here is a link (only in Spanish) to a non-Blog source confirming it was submitted by Bolivia. http://www.lostiempos.com/noticias/13-12-07/tragaluz.php 2. The fact that Azerbaijan and Ireland submitted for the first time. This is relevant and is contained in the Oscar press release that you yourself linked to the article. 3. The British nomination controversy. I find it extremely relevant to the article as these films were submitted to BAFTA for consideration. I respectfully ask that you allow it to stay. I understand that I do not own the article, but I think the controversy will be of a lot of interest to those people who access the page. I respectfully ask that you agree to disagree with me about WEIGHT, because although I am willing to eliminate many of the sections that you deleted, I strongly disagree about the deletion of this item. 4. I did not list every country that was invited to submit, but which did not submit. I only listed those countries FOR WHICH IT WAS A SURPRISE that they did not submit a film. Many invited countries (i.e. Bhutan, Guatemala, Cambodia, Kuwait) have submitted extremely infrequently. Other countries like Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine, it was SURPRISING that they did not submit a film.

I also disagree with many of the changes you made to the language section, although I thank you for allowing the column to stay. For example, if you had seen "Island Etude" as I have, you would know there were only a few lines in Lithuanian. The same thing goes for the French dialogue in "White Silk Dress"....Just a few French lines in the background. As for the Swiss entry, it was not in "German" and "Swiss German". It was in "Swiss German", so the correct thing to do would be to choose one or the other. However, I thank you for adding the links to the languages themselves. I have studied this list of films, and I hope that I know more about these films than most. I respectfully request that if you are uncertain about some of the details regarding these films that you ask me before deleting, and I will be happy to provide you with the information, as I was before.

I added the Oscar submissions pages for the 1990s around 2006, and those of the 1970s and 1980s in 2007. I was going to add the 1950s and 1960s this summer. If I have to be afraid that my pages will just be deleted, I am afraid it won't be worth my time to add the information.

If I appear curt, then I apologize. I've perhaps been a little uptight the past few days. Upon another look, some of your issues can be incorporated into the article. Again, my problem for the Bolivian section was the sourcing involved. The source you provided seems to be fine. That Azerbaijan and Ireland submitted a film for the first time is fine. On the BAFTA issue, I'll look into incorporating what I can. I still feel it is excessive, but I'll see what I can include. On the subject of listing countries that were a surprise that they did or did not nominate, I think that goes too far into the undue weight we discussed earlier. There's an extent to which summary goes, and I think that toes the line. That a record number of countries submitted films and listing the first-timers is enough in terms of summary. For the languages, I went a bit fast in wikilinking them, so feel free to be bold and fix them. Anyhow, please note that it's not that I'm not appreciating your work; on the contrary, I wouldn't have been able to write these pages without your aid. It's simply the matter that Wikipedia's policies and style guidelines simply need to be followed, but I think we can draw a happy medium between our concerns that works. Okay, let's keep that Bolivian link for now and I will continue to search for the official Bolivian announcement quoted on the blog.

To be frank, I think that the list of countries that did not submit is much more relavant that the lengthy section quoting critics who weren't happy with the nominations. I have been asked by at least three users from around the world this year for a complete list of the 95 countries that were invited, and there is obviously interest on this point, since the Academy invites certain countries and not others. However, I am satisfied to compromise on this point. However, I do find it relevant if a country that always submits a film backs out. You'll find that this was a major issue in the 1990s when one of the pre-nomination favorites was "Europa, Europa", and the German Academy said there was no German films suitable to represent the country. This led to the only German absence in the competiton in approximately 40 years of history. A similar instance happened once in India.

I will edit the languages tomorrow.

Again, because the British submission issue went all the way to Scottish government level and merited an inquiry from the AMPAS Foreign Film Committee itself, I sincerely hope that we can include a succinct mention of the controversy on the page. Please see the following two official sources:

Foreign Language Oscar submissions lists

Hi, Adtran! Thank you for the nice comment you wrote on the FLC talk page of the List of submissions to the 72nd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film! As you can see, I am very interested in improving articles related to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The problem is that for pre-1990s lists, it is impossible to find a reference, and this makes it impossible for these lists to attain featured list status on Wikipedia. I know that you are the one who created these lists (and I am extremely grateful to you for this!) based on information that was directly sent to you by the Academy. However, can't you cite a source? I mean, how did the Academy send you these lists? By postal mail? By e-mail? If it's a book, then is there an ISBN for instance? If it was by e-mail, then could you please copy the e-mail and post it on the articles' talk page? If we can provide references for all these lists, then it would be possible to improve them all until they attain featured list status, which would be a great thing!!

Finally, I wanted to ask you whether you were considering creating the 1956-1968 lists any time soon. The information is missing and is sorely needed, so if you're able to provide it, it would really be great. If you don't have the time, then you can send them to me by e-mail and I'll create them on Wikipedia. Of course, I'll credit you as the source. Best regards. Regarding the 1956-68 submissions lists, what do you mean when you say "I do not have access to them at the moment"? Does this mean that you no longer have them, or does it mean that you will have access to them some time in the future (if so, when?)? As for your work on the other lists, it's greatly appreciated by everyone in the community, including Sephiroth BCR himself. I fully understand your disappointment at seeing some of your work deleted. However, please do not feel completely frustrated by this. Regarding IMDb links, they are not taboo on Wikipedia as you think (only blogs are). Linking to the trivia sections on IMDb is discouraged as most of the information is unreliable and unsourced. However, providing links to the films themselves as you did on your pages is not only not taboo, but it is also highly desirable as it helps users create stub articles for those films. In fact, you may have noticed that Wikipedia's film infoboxes all have links to IMDb. The only thing is, when you insert an IMDb link, don't just put it as an URL; it is more appropriate to use this template.

As for the information about the film's languages, Sephiroth BCR did what I myself did when creating the List of Academy Award winners and nominees for Best Foreign Language Film: he took the information about each film's language from IMDb. Although this information is generally correct, it is not always entirely accurate. Since I haven't seen most of the nominated films, I cannot figure out whether the language cited by IMDb is indeed correct (this is rendered more difficult by the fact that IMDb does not distinguish between a film's main language and languages that are merely spoken in one line or two). I'm sure it's the same thing with Sephiroth BCR, who like me can only rely on IMDb. However, users who have seen the films in question are of course welcome to rectify erroneous information. For instance, Steinninn, who had seen the film Children of Nature, said that the film was entirely in Icelandic, and not in Icelandic and English as IMDb stated. Accordingly, I immediately corrected the information. Wikipedia is a collaborative effort, so input by anybody (especially someone like you who seems to have seen most of the films in question and is thus more knowledgeable about this topic than most other uses) is welcome.

Concerning the trivia information you wrote that was deleted, I'm sure Sephiroth BCR removed it because it's unsourced. For my part, I think it should stay, even though it's unreferenced, as unreferenced material should not be automatically deleted. In any case, please do not feel disappointed and frustrated. Deleting information

FYI, I'm not "deleting" (the notion of deleting stuff on Wikipedia is moot because of page histories) your information for the hell of it. I remove stuff because it's unsourced, and Wikipedia:Verifiability is one of the key policies that must be followed here. I don't have a problem with the information itself, but as far as I know, it's original research until confirmed by a reliable source. If you add sufficient sourcing to your information, then I gladly accept its inclusion (although I probably will copy-edit it and whatnot to get it to a cleaner format). It's not an unreasonable demand, and I'm certain a person as knowledgeable as you are about the Academy Awards process can find such sources (do read Wikipedia:Reliable sources though to see what's acceptable in terms of sourcing on Wikipedia though). Also, simply because I'm an administrator does not mean that I am inherently "higher" than you in terms of status or anything. Administrators on Wikipedia are nothing more than users with special tools (block, delete, protect, etc.) for managerial parts of the project. If I have offended, upset, or deterred you then I apologize. I welcome your aid in working on these articles (and welcome again to WP:FILM by the way). My only request is that you understand that there are policies and guidelines that need to be observed in articles. Wikipedia is not a compendium of all information and while some information may be "useful" or "tacky", it also may be trivial towards the understanding of the topic. Hope that clears some stuff up. on the List of submissions to the 81st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. As it stands, however, I don't believe we can refer to other Wikipedia articles as an RS under Wikipedia:Reliable sources - this comes across as Wikipedia:No original research.

Since it looks like at the moment, there are no sources which can support this paragraph outside the Wikipedia itself, I'm going to move the section to the talk page. If we can find sources outside of the Wikipedia, let's restore the section.

Thank you. I had emailed the AMPAS research library in 2007 and asked them for a complete lists of Foreign Film Oscar submissions from 1970-1992. Full Academy lists for 1992-2003 are widely available on the Internet, via the AMPAS Press Releases. (in retrospect, I should have asked going all the way back to the inception of the award). If you would like, I can e-mail you the entire list that I received from AMPAS as a source. I have seen eight of the sixteen films on the list (from Hollywood Kid up to 2006, and Korea has deserved an Oscar nomination nearly every year. It's a shame AMPAS has not yet recognized them. Hi Lugnuts. Thank you for your e-mail! For Oscar submissions BEFORE the advent of the Internet (i.e. submissions from roughly 1980s and earlier), I made an Information Request to the Margaret Herrick Library, which is a research library associated with the Association of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). They very helpfully provided the full lists of official submissions going back to the advent of the category in 1956. This information is not listed online, but I was asked once by someone on wikipedia (can't remember who) who asked me for the emails from the Library (which I sent) so they could be posted on some sort of common area (Wikipedia Commons??).
