Revision of the page: Delete Skype History (software)

As far as I understand the reason is that it contained references to the program web-site. I've removed the reference in the article body. Is it Ok now or I should review something in addiotion?

@Ahecht:Thanks for pointing me to the real reason. I've created the article as the programs have a big number of thankful users who want to recommend the applications to others. I've reviewed similar articles at Wikipedia and don't fully understand why you consider our software is less notable. The programs offer unique features (that no other software does) and, in deed and not in name, sometimes save our customers in very delicate situations. Probably you haven't found many relaible external references as the program name contains normal English words and there are many discussions on Internet using these words. Independent software reviews have been published on industry-influencing web-sites, e.g., [1] and we expect several others soon. Therefore I want to ask you to leave the article for a couple of weeks and then reevaluate the software significance. - Seanwud (talk) 19:29, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
@Seanwud: Softpedia is not an independent source, it's user-generated content, as they simply publish whatever the submitter of the software writes (I know, I have my own software published there). And be sure we didn't request the overview. Examples of our descriptions are [2] and [3]. If you like, I will collect a list of independent overviews for your convenience. And if the programs help users to resolve their particular needs, i.e., protect their privacy, why don't give the uses a chance to read the article (written in a neutral language without any promotion voice) and supplement it with their opinions? @Hamid bin qasim: All statements in your article should cite a source. You can get instructions on how to cite sources at WP:REFBEGIN. If you need publishing information on a book, you can usually find it at Google Books or Amazon. However, you must make sure that the books are specifically talking about "interference of biological psychological and sociological activities in fighting activity" and that you aren't writing a synthesis of published sources. In addition, you need to edit your submission to correct the grammar, capitalization, etc, and it needs to be broken into paragraphs and have a proper introduction to provide context for those not familiar with the subject. --Ahecht (TALK

@AmarnathManju: To make a wikilink, use the name of the article in your text and surround it with double brackets. For example, if you wanted to link to the article on Calcutta, you would type [[Calcutta]]. If the link you have created shows up in red, it means that the name in brackets doesn't exactly match an existing article title (and capitalization matters). --Ahecht (TALK

Hi Ahecht! I appreciate your input on the page I'm creating for Robert A. Needham. I saw you noticed a discrepancy about not using the proper citation for content derived from the book Collaborative Commonwealth. I was wondering if you could give me some input on what was the potential copyright infringement in the draft for the page and if it's a direct quote or should be paraphrased. @Alexprplus: The issue wasn't improper citation, the issue was that you either copied or closely paraphrased from a copyrighted source, which is a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy. All text in your article must be written in your own words (not just copied or closely paraphrased) AND should include a citation for where the information came from. Even if you cite your source, you still must use your own words. See WP:COPYVIO and WP:PARAPHRASE for more info. --Ahecht (TALK

Thanks for responding so quickly! So I'm not supposed to use quotes at all? I'm a little confused because I see quotes on other Wikipedia pages. Are you only allowed to use direct quotes from what people say then? Like in interviews? Thanks! Also, were using what Robert wrote on his Wikipedia page and I figured that would be okay to cite from the author his own content for his Wikipedia page. So it's still copyright infringement if we use content from the person we're creating a Wikipedia page for?

@Alexprplus: Direct quotes can be used in certain limited situations, such as quoting a few words from a review of a book, but they must be indicated as a direct quote and in quotation marks. Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Ahecht. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I noticed that my article was refused, in order to mention more reliable sources. But, as a proud fan of Avatar (Swedish band) since 2008, I know all the information I detailed was exact, true, genuine. I was only unable to find some good sources to prove you and the rest of the viewers that these infos weren't false. The band wasn't really known when this album came out, and good sources would be found in the search engines' suggestions of Sweden regions (where the band is coming from). @Gabriel Patrick Cabana: Unfortunately, the standard on wikipedia is that information be verifiable, not that it be true. Because Wikipedia can be edited by anybody, and anyone can add or change information anonymously, people that use Wikipedia need to be able to see where the information came from to verify that it is correct. However, assuming that you can understand the Swedish sources and that no English-language sources can be found, you can cite Swedish sources. @Grodecap: That's fine from a copyright standpoint, but from a content standpoint I don't see any evidence of what Wikipedia calls notability. All Wikipedia articles must be about subjects that are notable, and for a K-8 school this must be demonstrated by meeting the standards of WP:ORG or WP:GNG with citations to significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject of the article. --Ahecht (TALK

@Grodecap: Please see WP:REFBEGIN for the proper way to cite websites and books. It's fine to include the official website as a reference to verify information, but it doesn't indicate notability. "The Path Well Chosen", while also a good source to verify information, was published by the "Orchard School Foundation" and is therefore not independent of the subject and doesn't indicate notability. @Palisades1: I cleaned up the code of the draft a bit. You just need to put <ref> before your reference and </ref> after it, not <ref><ref> and </ref></ref>. You also should put the reference in the part of the article's text where you want the footnote to appear, not at the top of the article. Everything between the <ref> and </ref> tags will show up automatically in the "References" section and a link to the reference will automatically appear in the text. However, I removed the reference you added entirely because the linked article had nothing to do with Mcnamee. --Ahecht (TALK

To create a new article or amend an old one

My article on the English Spelling System was rejected on the grounds that there is already something about it in English Orthography, and that i should try to edit that one, but i find that piece so high-brow and academic that i can't even begin to think where to start. The title itself says it all. How many people know or use the word orthography? In the past i have tried putting a link to one of my blogs which explains the English spelling system in a way that ordinary people can unterstand, e.g. http://improvingenglishspelling.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/rules-and-exceptions-of-english-spelling.html, but it invariably got deleted.

This was probably because i have had a few books on spelling published, but since then i have put all my research findings on my blogs http://englishspellingproblems.blogspot.co.uk and http://improvingenglishspelling.blogspot.co.uk so that people can use them without having to pay a penny. I am horrified by the misinformation about English spelling on the internet which keeps stoking the never-ending reading wars, so I have spent the past 15 years trying to anlyse and describe English spelling as factually accurately as possible.

@Mashabell: If you type English spelling into Wikipedia you are automatically redirected to English Orthography, so finding the information isn't an issue. I guess the real problem is that if you're writing a wikipedia article based on books that you've written then it is considered original research, which is discouraged here. A good place to put it might be Wikibooks. Perhaps it could go somewhere in the English as an Additional Language wikibook (either on English as an Additional Language/General rules of spelling and capitalization or as a new page). I don't think people would object to a link from English Orthography to the Wikibook. --Ahecht (TALK

@Ghm141201: The basic issue is that your article appears to be written as a student paper or journal article, not a Wikipedia entry. Wikipedia doesn't allow editors to use Wikipedia to publish original research or to write a synthesis of published sources (as described at WP:SYNTH). Your article specifically has a "Methods and Resources" section, which strongly implies that it is original research, and a "Results and Conclusions" section, which implies synthesis. You also spend a lot of time describing what gout is and what a diet is (and the later being described with the general dictionary definition, not the aspects that relate to gout), which isn't needed in a Wikipedia article because those terms can be easily linked to if readers want more information. Unlike student papers, a Wikipedia article does assume that the reader does have some knowledge of the subject at hand and that if they don't, that they can click on the term to read about it. I know that in student papers it's typical to include this, but this shouldn't be in an encyclopedia article. --Ahecht (TALK

@Bexpinknfluffy: No problem, we were all beginners at one point. Articles that are biographies of living people require all statements to be supported by citations to reliable sources, and these citations must be linked to from the text of the article. For example, your article states that "John Roberts was born in 1937 in South Wales, he grew up in the valleys surrounding the mining town of Dowlais." but doesn't provide a reliable source for that information. I don't have access to the journal articles you cited, but it doesn't seem like they would contain the sort of biographical information you included in your article. To add that information you would use the <ref></ref> tags directly after the relevant statement. For example, if you got that information from Roberts's autobiography (I'm just making this up, I don't know if one exists), you would write in the body of your artile:
John Roberts was born in 1937 in South Wales, he grew up in the valleys surrounding the mining town of Dowlais.<ref>{{cite book|last=Roberts|first=John|Title=Autobiography|Publisher=Some Publisher|date=2002}}</ref>
And everything in between the <ref></ref> tags would be automatically replaced with a numbered superscript in the body of your article and automatically show up in the references section at the bottom. --Ahecht (TALK

International School of Business (Vietnam)

Hi Ahecht,

Thank you for reading the article on the International School of Business, Vietnam. I'm a little confused by the reasoning for rejecting the article; in your comments you wrote that "departments" of a university usually don't warrant their own Wikipedia article, and suggested folding the ISB article into that for the University of Economics, HCMC.

But ISB is not a department within UEH. Rather it's a separate university that simply has a partnership with UEH.

I realize there might have been some language in the original ISB article that could be misleading on this point, so I've removed those sentences.

Again, the International School of Business at UEH, HCMC is a unique university, and is not simply a department of the University of Economics.

I was able to add additional references/citations regarding the national and international noteability of the subject organization, including references from the Hmong Times, McClatchy News Organization (which owns the Fresno and Sacramento Bee newspapers and many others), the US Congressional Record, Los Angeles Times, etc. Also new references/citations to organization from National Public Radio (NPR) and its President, Colonel Wangyee Vang.

These are national and international news media sources for the most part.

I do not have access to JSTOR but their are other references in the Los Angeles Times as well as Agence France Press (AFP) to the Lao Veterans of America Institute and its President Colonel Wangyee Vang of Fresno, California. So the organization is most noteable with significant U.S. and international news media attention.

I will try to continue to add more additional references from other newspapers and news media sources regarding the Lao Veterans of America Institute.

reverting my edits

Although the image may have been wrong, why did you revert my other edits also? Especially the one to the punctuation in the first paragraph? You went ahead and did the same thing as my edit (corrected the period to the first reference) in your cleanup anyway. Why did you revert all of my edits, even the good one? Silent Teaching

Hi Ahecht,

I've recently been working on a page entitled Silent Teaching. My intention was not to write this in the first person but rather to build awareness through Wikipedia as to the extent of the uses of Silent Teaching, as I found there are pages attributed to silent teaching from other sources. I made valid attempt to relate to these sources through the piece submitted.

Are there any options or suggestions you may have? The only 'published' platform for the silent teaching work is via the Times Education Supplement website and through work with National Autism Society, together with published mentions of the work online.

Is there a way I could construct the writing in a way that may be better received via Wikipedia, as the piece is written to provide an account and an incite into silent teaching and not for the purpose of self-promotion. A number of colleagues were involved in assisting the original draft so I am exploring options if any are available.

Per the policy at WP:NOTPROMOTION, Wikipedia shouldn't be used as a platform to build awareness, as its designed to only cover subjects that people are aware of. Furthermore, if you are providing an account and an insight into silent teaching that hasn't already been published then you fall afoul of Wikipedia's original research policy. 1) People are aware of the subject of silent teaching and a number of these have downloaded silent teaching reports via the Times Education Supplement website 2)The account written mentions specifically work in the area of study via: See how this relates to earlier work [6] by Caleb Gattegno who said: "Teachers should concentrate on how students learn, not on how to teach" - Caleb's work is already noted via Wikipedia and thus the subject is widely known 3)The work in silent teaching has received media coverage via The South Shields Gazette and this is independent coverage and a great number of additional publications have commented on the subject of silent teaching, also reliable and independent

What would be your guidance in developing a Wikipedia page on-going, if any? Could I cite some of these additional sources who have commented independently on the subject of Silent Teaching?
