Request for Admin's process and the Caribbean/PR's Wikiproject

Considering the experience you have in WP, I wonder about your thoughts on the Request for Admin's process and why it seems that few of the editors linked to the Caribbean projects are usually involved (if any). It's a long story. When we started the project admins performed technical tasks that couldn't be performed by regular users. During that time adminship required some intricate knowledge of how the wiki operated. Unfortunately, as the software improved admins became janitors rather than technical gurus. By then the adminship process became a popularity contest rather than what is best for the project. As the process continued to evolve, admins became nothing more than glorified users—only a few tools are exclusive to them.

Furthermore, there is a great divide between editors and admins with many admins lacking the experience editors have. In turn, editors do not tend to see admins as superior officers. That's the issue at hand at WP:PUR. Those guys are veteran editors with many feats under their belts: top contributors, top curators, top creators, etc. They just don't see the value of admins when they are the ones working on what matters most: content.

Caribbean editors also tend to be highly specialized—they focus on Caribbean matters and nothing else. Typically, in order to be involved in the adminship process one must interact with various areas of the 'Pedia. Namely, the dispute resolution process, RfC's, the Village Pump, the mailing list, and so on. Since the Caribbean editors do not immerse themselves in those areas they do not know who's who on Wikipedia, so they do not participate in the adminsip process because they do not know the candidates.

Thanks. It clarfies much. I went back and studied not only this candidate's record, but also others. I was appalled by the treatment that Liz received. It seems it was a referendum on the content vs. others. But I think there are deeper issues than that. But coming back to the topic of the Caribbean, its relative abandonment is good and bad. It does not attract as heated debates (exception, Haiti and DR) as with other more transited articles, but it allows them languish half-baked for too long. Would it be helpful for more Caribbean-content editors to be more involved in governance? Cheers, Caballero/Historiador ^⎌ 17:22, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
