Demographic section of Hong Kong

1950's cencus showed 52% from guangzhou and 19% from taishan 1960's cencus showed 30-40% Taishanese population of hong kong

How ever the way it listed the ethnic group was misleading, as if it was similar in proportion. WarriorsPride6565 (talk) 4:44, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Hey Warriors, nice to meet you. May I have some context related to what you said above? What are you trying to accomplish? Is the section misleading, was it misleading... please elaborate. Thanks, Airplaneman 16:05, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

Everybody needs a kitten in their life. Kittens, kittens and more kittens! They're the world's greatest reward! Other than, of course, on Wikipedia, bureaucratship, or a job at Wikimedia... You, you know what? Let's just stick with the kittens for now.

PDFFiller

Hello Airplaneman! I hope that all is well. It's been a while since we were in contact. I'm hoping that perhaps you can help me with this: I have been asked to revise (if possible) an article - "PDFFiller" - that was deleted in 2009. However, I can't access the deleted text. Would it be possible for you to send it to me so that I can see it? Also, would be any special challenges in improving and resurrecting the article? (In other words, is it very hard to get an article with all this delete history corrected and reposted?) Thanks!Michael Leeman (talk) 19:14, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Kayavak

Hello, Airplaneman, I'm kind of down right now for a number of reasons:

  1. My fish died
  2. A beluga at Shedd died (this day just keeps getting better and better)
  3. And now I've learned that Kayavak may be posted for deletion.

I'm trying to collaborate with User:Qwyrxian on fixing it, and he's only pointing out the bad things to him. I have to take a WikiBreak for awhile, and I might not be editing frequently for some time. In the meantime, while I'm gone, do you think that, in my absence (which is hopefully brief) that you could find some verifiable resources about Kayavak? I know they're out there, it's just a matter of finding them. Qwyrxian has recently told me 70% of the article needs to be rewritten, and I'm not contesting that. If you could work on it while I'm gone, I'll make a whole new WikiLove template for you! This is important to me, and lately I've been consistently denied user rights. It's, as you could imagine, a tough time for me, and I need to relieve my stress. If you could help with this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your concern, Belugaboycup of tea? 12:46, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Hey Beluga, I'm really pressed for time in real life these days. Therefore (unfortunately) I've only made a few edits in the last half year or so. Nevertheless, I will try to look into this in the coming days (tomorrow and Monday). I hope you feel better soon, Airplaneman 00:09, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

October 2011

Constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, but a recent edit that you made to User talk:66.225.122.10 has been reverted or removed because it was a misuse of a warning or blocking template. Please use the user warnings sandbox for any tests you may want to do, or take a look at our introduction page to learn more about contributing to the encyclopedia. Thank you. 1st warn should not be a lv4im. Srobak (talk) 15:12, 29 October 2011 (UTC)

I use my discretion to place warning templates, as there is no set system. I warn based on the severity of the edits made. Or am I so out of it as to miss something like this? Please enlighten me :). Airplaneman 00:05, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
The escalation of warnings is a widely accepted practice. The idea is to (at least attempt) to coax a behaviour/editing style modification vs. hitting them in the head with a frying pan. This generally applies except in instances of blatent WP:SOCK, WP:MEAT, WP:HARASSMENT, and other cases of similar severity where not only is a lv4 warranted, but is frequently followed up with an immediate and permanent block. Of course - many of them do escalate all the way to lv4 and beyond - but at least the opportunity is given before going for the throat. Srobak (talk) 13:44, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
Sounds reasonable. It would have been more helpful if you had explained that in the first place instead of using a generic template, which left me with some unanswered questions. Going forward, I'll keep this in mind. Thanks for clarifying, Airplaneman 00:03, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

No prize was awarded for featured pictures, sounds or portals, as none were claimed throughout the competition. The awards will be handed out over the next few days. Congratulations to all our participants, and especially our winners; we've all had fun, and Wikipedia has benefitted massively from our content work.

Preparation for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Interested parties are invited to sign up and participate in our straw polls. It's been a pleasure to work with you all this year, and, whoever's taking part in and running the competition in 2012, we hope to see you all in January! a promotional editor

I see you've been one of the people advising User:MIchael Leeman with his articles. I have some general concerns with the style and nature of his work, and I've made a rather long post about them on his talk page; it refers primarily to cone of his current articles, buit it applies to his work in general. I think we've been much too easy-going with them. Please take a look at what i said, because you may want to comment, both in general, and about my specific points. As you know, I tend to support articles on companies and products, but to do this effectively, they have to be good articles. DGG ( talk ) 03:51, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Hey DGG, thanks for notifying me. I'll take a look, Airplaneman 04:57, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Haha!

I saw your edit summary at Kayavak and I laughed so hard I fell out of my computer chair! Granted, of course, it's a wooden stool with the monitor on an ancient table, but anyway, you brightened my day with your (hopefully) unintentional humor! (Hope my new sig colors aren't too striking) Belugaboycup of tea? 23:30, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

Help with Underhill family entries

Thank you for reaching out and your offer to help. I took a hiatus from Wikipedia several years ago because I felt that among certain administrators there was not an appreciation for items of primarily a local historical nature. The lack of subject matter knowledge among some administrators seemed to be all the rationale needed to recommend article for deletion. First, I though Wikipedia was far more democratic than that? Secondly, I thought that someone with knowledge and technological ability like myself would be more welcome. Upon returning yesterday my first two articles on Francis Jay Underhill and David Harris Underhill were recommended for deletion within hours of putting these up. The same administrator then cast into question every other article that I have written or contributed to on members of the Underhill family. I responded to the request to improve the first two articles in a manner I believe to be sufficient. I am deeply troubled, however, by the blanket request to change everything else that I've written. As a senior administrator skilled in the ways of Wikipedia, I'm wondering if you can help me navigate this challenge, and, in so doing, restore my faith in Wikipedia.

Underhill Society of America and related pages being singled-out for deletion

Hello, I'm having some real trouble with editors coming in and recommending pages I've set up for deletion. Recently the Underhill Society of America page that I set up was targeted. Similar lineage societies have pages within Wikipedia. I know this because I've helped to strengthen several of them like the Saint Nicholas Society of the City of New York. I'm not sure how to counteract this concerted attack by a few over-vigilant editors, who I'm pretty sure have no expert knowledge in the subject matter as I do. I should mention too, that one other editor, Blanchardb, has been helpful at restoring at least one other page for Col. John Torboss Underhill that was nominated for Speedy Deletion. I will strive to continue to strengthen the pages that I've created to show how they are relevant. Any efforts on your behalf to help support me in this work would be welcome. Please help if you are able. Thank you. Placepromo (talk) 21:14, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! 1 Wikipedians from DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, New York City, and Pittsburgh have been invited.
