Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
  • Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.

Jars

Hey. What i was saying is that the album is only certified 2x platinum, but sold 3 million copies, but less than 3 million in "certified" copies, certified copies being copies sold onshore. If they sell any outside the US, then they're considered certifying within the country of sale. --lincalinca 00:36, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't mean to mislead, I was saying that as a hypothetical. I'm saying that some may infer that because it's sold 3 million copies they were all onshore. I don't know how many were on or offshore, but I know it's sold over 3 million copies, but I can't say that the certi is right or wrong. --lincalinca 11:49, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ack! Sorry about the confusion :) I'll change it to something more appropriate if you like. Also, when checking recent changes, make sure you check who the last contributor was by looking at the history - I was the last contributor to my page, and thus unlikely to vandalise it ;) Keep up the good work, – Riana 11:09, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Aw, thanks for the compliment! :) It did get vandalised earlier today, but I did a full revert, so everything added was changed back. Thanks for keeping an eye out :) Take care, – Riana 11:16, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: AIIMS article

Dear Sir, Regards and greetings, Please do not edit this page again because the citations are from heavily biased news papers, citations from news papers shoud not be alowed. I am a resident of the hostels and i find all the statements about the apartheid and discrimination to be biased and baseless. The article about our beloved alma mater should not contain such biased opinions from individuals so before re-editing the page please do visit the campus and find yourself about the truth.

your truly, a student from AIIMS

You've done the right thing. May be worth reminding 'a student from AIIMS' about conflict of interest. But you've done well. Neutrality is good, but facts are facts. – Riana 19:03, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia! Your recent edit to AIIMS may not align with the Wikipedia guidelines, especially the neutrality and the copyrighted nature of the content. I have reverted your edit. In case you feel that my revert was in error, please feel free to leave a message on the discussion page of the article or on my talk page. Thank you! aJCfreak yAkBaK 17:57, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your revert is NOT in error. My post was too much. I just copied it and wanted to edit and refine it, but the connection popped of. Thanks for keeping Wikipedia clean. But You should understand that few point in that edit need to be mentioned. I am sure that you will do a good job of maintaining neutrality and leave that article to you. 121.246.242.42 06:36, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Violations

Many parts of the article are deragatory to the institution. Citations are mainly from newspapers which in India are heavilty biased any unreliable (they change their statements in hours.) I am actually very happy with the work of Ajcfreak. Also about his concern about the reports of caste based discrimination in AIIMS. I would like to ask him to read the language of the various sections were things about caste based dicriminations are written. I dont think the language is proper for wikipedia which is supposed to be neutral. So I would like to ask mr. ajcfreak to rewrite those parts after reading about the reality. i would like to report the biased and false parts.... please mr. ajcfreak edit these parts

unproven and uncited allegations-

"The vice-like grip that Dr Venugopal exercises over AIIMS is legendary. But doctors say the way he overrides and ignores their demands, disregards other faculty and charts his own course for the institute, riles them.[citation needed]

More than 200 faculty members had petitioned Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss against Venugopal’s recent decisions. The one decision that had irked them most was the hike in patient charges, which the faculty members saw as a departure from the AIIMS founding charter. However, the protests have not accomplished much.[citation needed]

The man’s political acumen also comes to the fore when one examines the fact that he was appointed by the NDA government though he was 61, beyond the retirement age. And while appointment letters state that a director is appointed “for a tenure of five years or the age of superannuation, whichever is earlier”, in his case the appointment read: “appointed as Director for a period of five years from the date he assumes charge and until further orders.”[citation needed]"

language and fact ( i have edited and given a reference of the parallel opds which was not mentioned and also about the "extra" reservation for "other backward classes "(OBCs)" institutions of excellence like IIMs, IITs, AIIMS etc.")

"They opposed the Prime Minister's appeal, putting the patients into discomfort as treatment was declined to them. This strike continued till 31 May when the doctors called off their strike after the Supreme Court of India orders. These students stood under the umbrella of an organisation named Youth for Equality and protested against reservations for backward classes."

See the language and the reference(`AIIMS Director Venugopal played provocative role in anti-quota stir' Aarti Dhar - Charge by Thorat Committee in report submitted to Union Health Minister)(Its just a commitee and it has charged the AIIMS administration with charges which are not yet proved and not even placed in court so won't you say its biased? also see the word forward caste after the name of Dr. B Khaitan for which the citation contains no reference about Dr B Khaitan leave apart him being from what caste he is from- I don't think you know or even me that he is from forward class neither he proclaims in his name as an ISP)-

"Reserved category students were bullied into vacating their hostel rooms, leading to an SC/ST ghetto being formed on two floors of Hostels 4 and 5. The reserved category students were forced into "social isolation" at various levels, including even from faculty members, with 84 per cent students saying they faced violence and segregation in the hostel[4] that often forced them to shift to hostels No. 4 and 5 where there was a concentration of SC/ST students.

A committee formed by the Central Government documents the acts of discrimination endured by students belonging to Dalit and tribal communities.[citation needed] Daily life at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences resembles that in the country’s feudal outbacks and Apartheid-era South Africa, a government committee has discovered, confirming findings reported by The Telegraph.[5]

AIIMS Faculty Association president B.K. Khaitan (from Forward caste) in a statement[6] said these allegations were "absurd and baseless."

please keep an eye on the article because it is a burning issue and may mislead many innocent people. In this context this becomes our unshirkable responsibilty that whatever comes out of this article should be well scrutinized, unbiased and true.

and violators may face litigations......

yours truly

Comment on image use

Hi, thanks for the message about image use policies. I've been reading policies most of the morning and I feel like I've still just barely got a handle on things. I've uploaded several other images along with the one you mentioned. How long do I have to establish the... use-ability of them? Every one of them was taken/published prior to 1923. What exactly does it take to prove that? A lot of the sites that have the images are using them without permission - I can't find one that actually owns the image themselves, they just "found it" and posted it. What do I do in a situation where the image is clearly published prior to 1923? Nswinton\talk 18:36, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just give a link to the website where you found the image. --Mschel 18:46, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hi when i changed it i didnt notice that i typed in an I before the 4. my mistake

Hi, dear Ajc! :) Thanks for the heads up regarding this article; it has indeed become a vandal magnet these last days. For that reason, I've semi-protected it for 5 days in order to discourage more nonsensical additions. Since it's not an article I normally watch, I'll add it to my list to make sure they don't resume the vandalism when protection expires; keep a watchful eye just like you've perfectly done, and we'll keep it under control. Have a beautiful day! :) Love, Phaedriel - 21:53, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Billy Yesudian.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Billy Yesudian.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 13:06, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

  • As an adminstrator of the Sivaji project., I am going to revert all your edits. Maajor revision by a single editor should be discussed on the talk page, to User: AVTN or I. Universal Hero 15:17, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again!

Hi there, dear Dan! I've reviewed your concerns regarding the images on that article, and at first glance, only one needs renaming; that is Image:73417053 9cf7fb3494 o.jpg. I'm not aware of any procedures to do it, tho; the best way is to re-upload it with the desired name and request deletion of the previous one (you can simply ask me to do it for you). But, this image also has another problem; it is a movie poster, and hence the copyright tag is wrong since it's currently marked as a self work. Here's my suggestion: copy it and re-upload it with your chosen name, and add a fair use rationale and the proper copyright tag, and let me know when you're done so I can delete this version. Sounds ok?
By the way, I haven't forgotten about your previous request - is just that I have so little time these days! I promise I'll look into it this very weekend - I swear! ;) Love, Phaedriel - 18:35, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done, dear Dan! (notice the red link above ;) Let me know if I can help you in any way, and thanks so much for the most kind words! :) Love, Phaedriel - 18:59, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Sivaji_firstday.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Sivaji_firstday.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:06, 15 June 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. OsamaK 19:06, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Sivaji: The Boss

I am glad to have another editor under the Sivaji: The Boss article wing. The stats of the Sivaji: The Boss page can be found here.

I normally don't have problems with the editing of the article as long as it is adding information. UH is the formatter. I do some formatting if UH requests but currently I am in exams. After which I will be doing a massive Rajinikanth completion project which was started about 2 months ago. You should consult him on Sivaji: The Boss for now. And no watching Sivaji on pirate copies. Respect our thalaivar's wishes.

A interview with Rajinikanth just before the film can be seen here.

Enjoy. AVTN 20:06, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:CSICE logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:CSICE logo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 19:50, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sivaji question

This week's Outlook says that the cost of the movie is 80 crores and it is 52 for Devdas. Does this qualify as a better source ? The ref for 60 crores is 8 months old. Tintin 10:55, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback

Alright, here is some feedback. The one real problem I noticed was that you do not seem to have a great grasp on image licensing, as evidenced by some of the images you have uploaded. The other thing I noticed is that you have very few edits in the Wikipedia namespace. That is not a problem with your editing, but it would be good to get some policy experience, and if you decide to make a request for adminship in the future, you will need to have a large amount of experience in the Wikipedia namespace. --Mschel 16:38, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've had enough of this constant nonsense and tattering from which once had been a good article.
  • Despite being started, developed and furnished by me, others have decided to take loyalty. User: AVTN, User: ajcfreak, User: Sarvagnya, User: Gnanapiti and others have deprived all the controls.
  • By the way, I've stopped caring about the article and refuse to edit it constructively unless calls are heard for and:
    • Discussions are made on the talk page before major changes
    • People accept that Behindwoods.com is actually a fair source and official - sponsoring many tamil films.
    • The unneeded tags on the article are removed
    • Anonymous/new editora re restricted from editing.

Until then I disassociate myself from the article I made "spectacular"

Unreferencing

I must admit, my Indo-European friend (unless you're an Indian who is not, but my friend in any case (a stranger is just a friend you have not met)), that I don't understand why the article weak noun needed dereferencing. The bibliography is there and although it contains only one entry, it should suffice for all practical purpuses. I possess that book and drew on it. If you want more references, just say so, I have a number of them. Cheers Io 17:31, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Biting heads

Well, that is something I am not accustomed to doing. It's messy. Anyway, the European angle came from the fact that the majority of Indians speak Indo-European languages. If your native tongue is Dravidian or Sino-Tibetan or something else, I apologise. But if you speak, say, Hindi, we speak (very distantly) related languages. In any case, I feel the reference to this single grammar I provided should suffice. The facts are in there, but in Icelandic. Curiously enough the best books on Icelandic grammar are in Icelandic, Danish or German, but the English speaking nations have left the language mostly alone. All the best Io 17:59, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Weak and Strong

Since you are interested in languages, you might take a look at the complex of articles dealing with Icelandic and criticise at will. Personally I'm a Civil Engineer by training but my interests are the natural sciences and languages. The article about strong nouns suffers from the same malady as the weak one, namely that I wrote it today without regard for other languages which make the same distinction, for instance German. Anyway, any and all contributions are welcome. And I stand by my convictions about strangers you may not (or perhaps already) have met. I lived abroad for a few years and one of my friends from that time (although we have regrettably lost contact) was a Gujarati. Cheers Io 18:24, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PS If I gave you his name, could you find out, where he is. The last I knew of him he lived in Madras, and his parents probably still do, if they are alive? Cheers Io 18:29, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lost Friend

Since this a kind of personal matter, can I e-mail you the information I have?

Consider this as a favour. I'll be grateful. In the process you, at least, will learn my real name. :-) (As if that matters, but searching for a long-lost friend is something personal). The street is Anderson Road, if my memory does not fail me, and the family name is Parikh. I'll go through my folders and dig up the last whereabouts. And, the last I knew he was working for British Steel. If you would be so kind. He has to have an email address by now. I last saw him in 1988. Perhaps that is also a sign that an Icelander never completely forgets his friends - nor forgives his enemies, should he he have some, but I can happily say that there is not a single person on earth, whom I consider an enemy. There are people, who do not like me, but either they are right, and I should improve, or they are wrong, in which case I really don't care. Cheers Io 19:01, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My userpage

Oh, that! I think it's because I deleted my userpage earlier... I've restored the old revisions now... have a go! :) Riana (talk) 10:03, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm God. Hope that answers your question. Hehe, I was surfing for something I didn't understand in a lecture, and your name popped up... it helps that you have a link to your talkpage in your sig... and that I type reasonably fast... and that it wasn't a hard question! :) Riana (talk) 10:16, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Where do emails end?

I mailed you earlier this day (probably evening in India), and sent myself a copy. If you choose to reply, will that mail end up in my gmail-account. (That was the account I gave, when I registered.) I would not like to have our communication broken. Cheers Io 14:47, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New userpage

Hey Dan! I like your new userpage design! How are things going? Do you need help with anything? --Mschel 14:51, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Old Languages

Tamil may possess the oldest writings og all Dravidian languages, but if we accept the theory, that human language arose just once, every language is equally old. It is just a matter of preservation. I could make an equally good case that Icelandic is the oldest of the North-Germanic languages, but that is also just because of literacy, writings and preservation. The Danes and Norwegians didn't stay mute during a few centuries. But their languages changed drastically more than ours. They are equally old, but some preserve the original better than the rest. Just had a look at your user page

And saw your picture. Christ, I could be your grandfather, if we count short generations. But anyway, friendship spans across age, religion, "race" (in quotation marks because that is not definable), contintents, languages and 'most everything you would care to throw in. (Human sacrifice, stoning and the death penalty are excluded for my part, you may or may not disagree.) Have you found something about you-know-what? Allar góðar vættir fylgi þér (An appellation to the Gods to keep an eye on you.) Io 16:49, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you have read my messages with attention, you'll know I'm an agnostic. That does not mean an absence of faith, just, let's say I'm a doubting Thomas. I have encountered enough people in my life to convince me that there may be more out there than we know about. In the meantime the Icelandic vættir should be enough to protect you and yours. Not that I believe in them, but I'm not totally free of superstition, and the spirits of my country should be enough to embrace my friends as well. I light a candle in honour of a recently departed friend of my mother's. She was also my friend from the day I was born. Cheers Io 17:41, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS The above to explain to a true believer, how other people live, and more importantly, find the spirit to live on. You're no fanatic, despite your user name, but some people just don't know. Does this make sense to a believer? Cheers Io 17:52, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You got the message. Peace and friendship. Cheers Io 18:01, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great work! :)

Hi there, dear Dan! :) Please, let me applaud your adaptation of my design to your userpage! Not only it looks great, but you've actually enhanced it, and discovered new possibilities with your excellent formatting. Needless to say, you're more than welcome to use it, and it's my pleasure that you like it. One minor detail, tho: in lower resolutions, the page exceeds the screen's width, basically because you've included an image at the column to the right; but this is very minor, tho I can try to fix it if you wish.
By the way, I haven't forgotten about your request to review that article; you may have noticed I've been having a little bit of trouble to edit as I normally do, but hopefully I'll be able to sit down calmly and help you with it as soon as I possibly can. Have a beautiful day! :) Love, Phaedriel - 06:17, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Is there some code that could be written so that it's curvy in IE too? :D" - sure, it's here ;) Riana (talk) 09:30, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I thought we'd answered that one? ;) And no, IE is too old school for curves and fancy CSS tricks. Maybe in a couple of hundred updates :) Riana (talk) 09:35, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Lol, good God, Riana dear, you stole my reply! ;) Yeah, that's the wisest answer you can ever get, Dan... IE? IE? What's IE? ;) Love you two! Phaedriel - 09:37, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I wasn't sure if it showed up correctly in everyone's browsers... might go back to it :) Riana (talk) 09:39, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's quite a solid reason! ;) Anyway, I'm afraid the curvy borders are one of those lovely features that only Firefox allows... So most people still use IE in India? Interesting...I'll keep that in mind when I design userpages, considering there are so many excellent Indian editors here... you are the living proof of that! ;) (and yes, you did enhance it - I absolutely love your format!)
