The article Toxic 100 has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Does not qualify for an article. It is not notable and the only sources are from the organization that publishes it.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Dairy industry

Hi, hope you are back soon. I've noticed a couple of things in the last few minutes and you too may be unable to help but I will put the question(s) to you.
First the WP article on the New Zealand Dairy Board claims it began in 1961 which is wrong try 1923 for size (1961 I think is merely a legal nicety) but I don't know enough about the subject do you? and
The article about the NZ dairy industry makes no mention of the Dairy Board though surely Fonterra is just the Dairy board with logical developments. Am I wrong?
Can you spell it out in those two articles? Regards, Eddaido (talk) 11:11, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Welcome back!

It is good to see you again! Please be aware that with your return there will be people out there sharpening their pitchforks getting ready to come for you. Please do not give them grounds on which to do so. I remind you of your indefinite topic ban which states "Alan Liefting may not make any category-related edits outside of mainspace until and unless this topic ban is lifted." (see Wikipedia:Editing restrictions). Please be careful. --Hammersoft (talk) 13:06, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Ditto. And reiterating what Hammersoft said, while you believe "Wikipedia is far too important to let overzealous admins prevent the work from getting done", you will find yourself site-banned if you contravene the conditions of the editing restrictions noted above. Go carefully. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:46, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

FYI... you adding the TOC at the beginning of the article broke WP:TOC and WP:LEAD. No content between TOC and first headline. This is an accessibility issue for users of screen readers. Bgwhite (talk) 05:00, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Environmental categories

Thank you for starting Category:Environment by year and its subcategories for specific years, and for using those subcategories for categorizing subcategories of Category:Protected areas by year of establishment. Earlier this year, I categorized many articles in those subcategories, but unfortunately I did not find a similar series of subcategories (which would be) in Category:Environmental organizations by year of establishment (which I started and placed in Category:Organizations by year of establishment). I found the wikicode to be interesting (with separate lines for millennia and centuries and decades and years), but I consider myself to be not skilled enough to make those subcategories with the necessary templates and the documentation. If you would make those subcategories, possibly revising Category:Environmental organizations by year of establishment and Category:Environmental organizations established in 2009 for them to have the special wikicode, I would be grateful for your work. (Your talk page has been continuously on my watchlist for several years.)

Hello. Need your help and advice

Hello,

I have re-created the article User:DmitryPopovRU/Alex Gilbert. It was previously deleted due to not being notable enough. There are sources such as http://tvnz.co.nz/sunday/s2014-ep1-video-5821764 , http://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=11232549 and http://www.nzherald.co.nz/northern-advocate/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503450&objectid=11310534 which should make this article notable now. Please let me know or if I should just leave this article as a work in progress on my page. Thanks You --DmitryPopovRU (talk) 08:09, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Looking at the references and judging by the previous deletion discussion I suspect that it is still not a notable topic. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 08:18, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Discussion in which you may be interested

Alan, there is a discussion at the Move/Split section of the Magdalene asylum talk page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Magdalene_asylum in which you may be interested. You started a discussion in 2011 on the subject. Somebody recently requested the opportunity to revisit your thought and received a mean-spirited reply from a new editor who seems to believe that only his opinion is valuable. Thank you for giving some time to check the talk page and discussion! Taram (talk) 03:25, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification. I will see if I can help out with the discussion. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 07:26, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Alan. Thanks for closing the Move/Split discussion. I was wondering if you, or maybe Taram, would be able to coordinate the splitting work. I think it'd be good to get it tidied up quickly, and I'll try to contribute such help as I can. I'd volunteer to take the lead myself, but I don't have much bandwidth right now, unfortunately. Cheers! jxm (talk) 18:55, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

I looked into it and did a bit of planning. There is a lot of work needed to extricate the Ireland stuff and in getting the balance between the two articles done correctly. I don't really want to spend a lot of time here but I will take the lead on the splitting. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 21:29, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Marriage and divorce rates in New Zealand.gif

Thanks for uploading File:Marriage and divorce rates in New Zealand.gif. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 07:40, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Unblock

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Alan Liefting (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

Wikipedia needs all the experienced editors it can get. Many experienced editors have left for various reasons and there is a huge amount of work the needs doing . I consider myself to be an experienced editor having started over 10 years ago and amassed over 100,000 edits. I have been repeatedly blocked because I contravene a topic ban that has been imposed on me, which is necessarily broadly worded (IMO and that of some other editors). The edits for which I am now being blocked (and make up only a small portion of the total) are not contentious. They are not detrimental to Wikipedia but my actual blocks are detrimental given the loss to the project of my prolific edits. Note that much of my work is on categorisation, which on the admission of some editors, is an area that is difficult to understand.
It is actually quite ironic that IP editors and new account editors can run amok with vandalism and poor quality edits yet as an experienced editor such as myself, who prides himself in building the project, with creating content, and with fixing problems, is blocked. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 23:56, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Decline reason:

The bottom line of this appeal seems to be basically "I don't wanna, so I'm not gonna." You don't want to adhere to your topic ban, you don't adhere to your topic ban, and you want to be allowed to continue to not adhere to your topic ban. I'm afraid I don't see "well, he doesn't want to follow it" as a reason to lift a block that was properly placed in response to you violating your topic ban. You say your edits aren't contentious, but you were topic-banned from that area exactly because you couldn't tell, or maybe didn't care, if your edits in that area were contentious, so your judgment of them now is not what you should be relying on. That you seem to feel that you must either edit categories or not edit Wikipedia at all and deprive us of your activity, is regrettable. We never want to lose good edits or editors. But it's ultimately you who's choosing to make it an all-or-nothing proposition; you could just as easily continue editing everything except the things you're topic-banned from, and Wikipedia would welcome that.

If you want your topic ban lifted, then you should commit here to not violating it, get unblocked based on that commitment, and appeal the topic-ban to AN with a good reason why it's no longer necessary. Doing end-runs around it instead is just going to make it appear even more like you can't control your behavior in the area of categories. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 00:17, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

In other words you think that it is ok to be blocked because I did a few completely uncontentious edits? -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 00:23, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Alan, myself and others told you to stay away from category related edits. We didn't say stay away from category edits unless they are not controversial. You knew perfectly well that you were on a very short leash when you came back from your last long block. Despite this, you violated the topic ban anyway. It's not a matter of whether the edits are contentious or not. You knew better, and did it anyway. I'm very, very disappointed. With your >100,000 edits you should have known full well what would happen if you violated your topic ban. With being blocked for violating the topic ban six times before, you should have known you would have been blocked for violating it again. Did you honestly think this time would be the charm? That somehow all your prior blocks for violating your topic ban would have no bearing? Alan, please, you know as well as I do this is not reasonable behavior. Whether the topic ban is reasonable or not is immaterial. It is in place, and you continue to violate it. Given that there are six prior blocks for violation of the topic ban, I'm honestly surprised the block is not indefinite. --Hammersoft (talk) 02:17, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Information icon Hello, I'm Spyder212. I noticed that you recently removed some content without explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; I restored the removed content. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Please do not edit pages in the user space - contact the user Spyder212 (talk) 01:02, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

It does seem that I was a little bit lax with edit summaries during my recent, brief editing session but often an edit will be self explanatory. I guess in this instance you are referring to the removal of Category:Articles from User:Spyder212/Articles. User pages do not belong in content categories, especially a high level category such as Category:Articles. Have a read of WP:CAT and its related pages for more information. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 02:32, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
I see that you have only recently started editing Wikipedia. Great to have you on board and I hope you stay and help out the project. With regard to your comment "Please do not edit pages in the user space" that is not really how Wikipedia operates. In my case I do have a topic ban on the edit that I carried out on the page in your user namespace but users cannot claim ownership of their user pages. It is often the case that bots or human editors have to carry out edits on user pages. I guess I could have requested you to do the edit that I did but doing it myself seemed like a reasonable thing to do. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 02:48, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Blocked

Stop icon with clock

You have been blocked temporarily from editing for repeat violations of your topic ban against making any non-mainspace category edits. Examples: [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], as well as others from your recent contribution history. Your last block for the same conduct was enacted a mere nine months ago here (and your unblock request declined here) and within the same day you resumed editing after that block had expired you also resumed violating your topic ban. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by first reading the guide to appealing blocks, then adding the following text below this notice: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}. postdlf (talk) 19:58, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Thank you. Got to do the chores around the house anyway. Since I am blocked I will have to get others to revert my contentious edits. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 20:02, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
You're clearly not caring about any of this. So why not make the block indefinite, as Hammersoft suggested last time? postdlf (talk) 20:21, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
I don't want to carry on with another pointless talkfest that goes nowhere again. Or maybe I will??
I don't know what you mean when you say "You're clearly not caring about any of this". What I care about is creating an informational, educational resource that is reliable, robust and respected. Wikipedia can become such a thing. Eventually. But it needs a lot of work to get there. And I like doing that work.
You ask whether the block should be made indefinite? That is up to the community of course, especially admins, who, in my opinion and that of others can sometimes be overly punitive (not sure if this is the case with yourself). If I was indefinitely blocked I could set up a sockpuppet account. I don't intend doing that and I may be caught out anyway. Alternatively I could just edit as an anon. I would have no baggage to weigh me down. I could do what I like. I could do category edits with gay abandon. Vandals get away with all sorts so I could get away with all sorts of edits to improve WP. The lax security inherent in Wikipedia would allow be to do that.
So are any of the edits I did in violation of my topic ban contentious in any way? If not could I just say WP:IAR? -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 21:40, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
None of the edits that I did in contravention of my topic ban are contentious of course, and do not need reverting. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 03:16, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

  • Indeed one of the problems with Wikipedia's society is that a person, once blocked, is besmirched forever. Even wrongfully placed, wholly invalid blocks stay with you forever. If more blocks accumulate, there is no way for a person to clear their name. A person with blocks is considerably less respected than a brand new account. In some ways this is good, in others bad. There are many (and I mean _many_) times when a person is hopelessly entangled in the morass and can never extricate themselves, no matter what they do. Even if they are flawless moving forward, there are those that will hunt them with abandon, and never face sanctions for harassing them. I've seen it time and time again. I've railed heavily against it, to no avail. Indeed, I myself am probably one misstep away from another block for defending people like Alan. If my slate were clean, this would likely not be the case. But, I have a block on my record from seven years ago, placed by an admin who has since been forcibly de-adminned, and unblocked by an admin who didn't understand the case at hand. But, once marked you are doomed. It's just a matter of time.
  • I don't agree with Alan's actions to edit against the topic ban. Alan, you know better and have acted in ways you know will get you blocked. That said, the actions of the community here towards Alan have been most reprehensible. Such behavior does not excuse Alan's behavior, but the desperation of the community to pigpile on someone who is doing nothing to harm the project is despicable. --Hammersoft (talk) 14:29, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
I'd agree with Hammersoft on this. This block is pointless (and very similar to Eric Corbett's current block). It improves nothing, it protects nothing, it is merely hounding an editor who, broadly speaking, we want to keep as a constructive editor.
Yet it's as a result of actions clearly against the wording of a topic ban. That leaves other editors with no argument against it. How can Hammersoft or I say that "this block is wrong" when it had such a clear pro-forma justification just waiting for it? You threw them enough rope, and they hung you with it. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:03, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
It seems that admins follow blind bureaucracy rather than the aim of WP. There also seems to be a desire by admins to wield power rather than make rational decisions. They may be otherwise good editors. Power corrupts, and admin power corrupts admins. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 04:37, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Agreed. However, getting blocked by them isn't going to change the system. Rather, getting blocked makes them feel they did some supposed good for the project. It further enhances the broken system. Whenever your block expires, please stop editing categories. --Hammersoft (talk) 13:26, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
But editing categories is what I like doing and I have a lot of experience doing it. And why aren't we fixing the broken system? -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 22:45, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
"It seems that admins follow blind bureaucracy rather than the aim of WP." yes, admins follow topic ban instructions, as is their instruction. Stop deliberately violating your topic ban, work on one or more of the many million articles that need to be improved, and stop goading the community by your continual poking and pushing of your topic ban, and things would be fine. I'm bemused, I know loads of Kiwis, all of them are decent folk, and all they want to do is help, in any way they can, within their boundaries, but you just seem dedicated to proving a point and getting yourself blocked again and again and again. I think there are millions of articles you could improve, without violating your current topic ban, so why not focus there? Otherwise, you're simply trolling here to prove a point? I don't know. What I do know is that I've worked on niche articles a lot this year and got a lot of satisfaction from getting them up to snuff. You could do the same. You don't need to work on the one thing that got you blocked. For what it's worth, I'd unblock you now if you gave me some guarantee that you would respect the topic ban and engage in other areas of interest here. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:30, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
But editing categories is what I like doing and I have a lot of experience doing it. I don't mean to goad the community. I am just trying to improve WP. I cannot respect the topic ban because it is too broad and it was put in place for spurious reasons and because it prevents me from helping out with improving WP.
TRM, I was going to say more but it seems that it is you who is trolling (and have done so in the past). -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 22:45, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
Very well. My offer stands, but I guess we'll see you blocked for a year in late-November. The Rambling Man (talk) 04:45, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
"It seems admins follow blind bureaucracy rather than the aim of WP"
It seems? We all know this already. Dogs bite too. So why do you keep poking them with a stick? Andy Dingley (talk) 21:09, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
So why they don't let me WP:IAR? I am not editing categories to make the admins bite back. I am doing it because it is a job that needs doing. If I see something that needs doing on WP I will get on and do it. I have a topic ban that prevents me from doing perfectly acceptable edits on WP but if I do them I get blocked. So what is the problem with this scenario? Me? The topic ban? The admins? Everything? -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 22:45, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
IAR only applies in the ivory tower of Jimbo's talkpage. Otherwise this is a bureaucracy of petty teenage traffic wardens, and you knew that already.
You are not allowed near categorization. This is a poor topic ban, because it mis-specified the scope of the real problem, but that's minor. More to the point: it exists. You must either observe it, or be blocked for ignoring it. Which one is up to you. You have a topic ban, I have David Cameron as prime minister. We both have to do what we can within this. Andy Dingley (talk) 23:14, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
(it seems that being blocked stops me from doing the lovey dovey wikilovey thing of thanking you for the edit and there is no facebook style like button) LOL!"a bureaucracy of petty teenage traffic wardens". I think you have hit the nail on the head! -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 23:27, 3 June 2015 (UTC)

Please place on the page User:Alan Liefting a link to User:Alan Liefting/Categories, a new subpage instructing other editors on editing categories.

  • What categories need to be edited?
  • What kinds of editing do categories need?
  • What mistakes should editors avoid in editing categories?

In that case, other editors will be able to assist you in editing categories.

  • For now, he can't create that subpage. --Hammersoft (talk) 17:55, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
  • That is a solution if I were to be able to edit but as pointed out by Hammersoft I cannot create subpages. If I did create such a page I think it would be ignored. When I have asked other editors, and I think it may have included @The Rambling Man:, it was a awful chore and sometimes it took a lot of to-ing and fro-ing to get it right. As volunteers WP editing should not be a chore for us (which is why we see a lot of stuff the needs doing going undone but that is another story). -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 06:20, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:New Zealand population graph, past and projected.gif

Thanks for uploading File:New Zealand population graph, past and projected.gif.

You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 17:34, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on North American Association for Environmental Education, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. DGG ( talk ) 19:37, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

The article Catholic Church sex abuse cases by country has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Insidious Sexual Content

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. A tag has been placed on Category:Invasive fish species requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Corruption in New Zealand

Hi, keen to add back in some of what was wiped back in 2013. In particular I think the article badly needs to have a section dealing with the widespread perception that some aspects of NZ policy and law are occasionally "for sale" to those with the money and contacts. I don't have a particular barrow to push, and not a lot of time and energy to spare for this, but ask that you (as someone agin this back then), take any addition I make in good faith, and see what we can do to improve the article, which is currently little more that one crowing about our high standing. - Snori (talk) 23:39, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
