New 10,000 Challenge for Canada

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/The 10,000 Challenge is up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Canada like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Canada but fuelled by a contest such as The North America Destubathon to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. I would like some support from Canadian wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile! Well, hold on here... the text I'm seeing for the last bunch is based on a portion of the MOS that says the previous way was correct, i.e. it is unnecessary to link to Toronto, Ontario, Canada when just Toronto, Canada or even Toronto alone will do. My 5¢. - Floydian

I did not write that section of the wp:mos. I'm not sure what point you are making, are you saying that you think it is wrong to use the province? We do use the provinces as part of the locations in Canada, same as locations in the US use the state. Alaney2k (talk) 13:45, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

On the front page of WP:AWB it says that there should be "demonstrable consensus" for making mass changes – demonstrable meaning "clearly apparent". The discussions I've read about this change being made didn't seem to have that high level of consensus I would have thought would be required here. I noticed that you are a frequent editor of the various Godzilla pages. I was wondering if you wanted to give your "2 cents" on an issue. There is this one editor who's listing every US poster of the various Godzilla film pages for deletion here Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2017 January 27. There are 18! film posters listed from Ghidorah to Space Amoeba (sections 72 through 88). So since you are an editor on these pages like myself and the person in question, I was wondering if you wanted to chime in. Changes/expand on the MUTO article?

I've noticed you've contributed to the MUTO article in the past. Given that the MonsterVerse is officially a thing now and the MUTO's from Godzilla 2014 aren't the only MUTO's in that universe, should we expand the MUTO article by adding MUTO's from Kong: Skull Island? You know, should we make the article reference all the MUTO's in the MonsterVerse so far rather than just have it be a character page exclusively for the 2014 MUTO's? What are your thoughts? @Armegon: I don't know. I think at some point, a "list of" article should be done. The MUTO article looks pretty good right now. The new monsters might be only minor characters. We could start a section in the MonsterVerse article and see if we have content to expand into another article or work on a merge. Wayne Thomas, Hockey Player/Coach/Manager

Robert Wayne Thomas born October 9, 1947, in Ottawa, Ontario, is a former professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, and New York Rangers. After 45 consecutive years in professional hockey as a player, coach, and team executive, Thomas retired from the NHL in July, 2015.

Playing Career: Prior to his professional career, he played his last amateur hockey for the University of Wisconsin under the late Bob Johnson. There he played two years of varsity hockey, culminating in the team's first appearance in the Frozen Four in Lake Placid, NY in 1970. He left Wisconsin to play professionally after his Junior year of college. Thomas played parts of 3 years in the Montreal Canadiens' minor league system, winning the American Hockey League championship trophy, The Calder Cup, in 1972 with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs. The following year he played 6 games for the Voyageurs before playing his first NHL game with the Canadiens when he recorded a shutout against the Vancouver Canucks. He recorded an 8-1 regular season record, but did not play during the playoffs as the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. After 3 seasons in Montreal he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in June of 1975 for a first round draft pick. During his two years in Toronto he was selected to play in the 1976 All Star game and recorded the win. Following his 2 years in Toronto he concluded his playing career with the New York Rangers in 1981.

Coaching and Executive Career: After retiring as a player, he was hired by New York Rangers GM Craig Patrick and Head Coach Herb Brooks as one of the first goaltending coaches in professional hockey. Brooks changed his role to assistant coach with emphasis on goaltending in the beginning of the 1982 season. He remained in that position with the Rangers until the end of the 84-85 season. Thomas then became the head coach of the Interntional League Salt Lake Golden Eagles in 1985 where he spent two seasons. In his second year in Salt Lake City, the Golden Eagles won the IHL Turner Cup Championship and Thomas was awarded the Commissioner's Trophy as the IHL Coach of the Year. In 1986 he returned to the NHL as assistant coach of the Chicago Blackhawks for one season. The following season he was hired by the St. Louis Blues as their minor league head coach of the IHL Peoria Rivermen. In 1991, the Blues brought him to St. Louis as an assistant coach to Head Coach Brian Sutter. His area of concentration was goaltending. In 1993, Thomas left the Blues to become Assistant to the General Manager and Assistant Coach with the San Jose Sharks. He remained in that role until being named Assistant General Manager during the 1995-1996 season. He was named Vice President of the Sharks in 2001. He remained Vice President and Assistant General Manager until his retirement in 2015.

Personal Life: Thomas has a Bachelor's of Science degree in Physical Education from the University of Wisconsin. Wayne and his wife, Barb, have 2 daughters, Gretchen Thomas Kane(Tim) and Abra Thomas Larson (Hans) and 3 grandchildren, Erik Larson, Elsje Larson, and Harrison Kane. MonsterVerse template

Navigation template should only include full articles because they exist to be bidirectional. Therefore they should not include redirects and no links to sections becuse they can't fill out the link in the template. The template should be placed in the article and therefore black out the link, which gives the reader context when looking at it. There also shouldn't be two links to the same article, the article you link to is a redirect to an article which is already in the template, therefore utterly useless and unneeded in the template.★Trekker (talk) 14:48, 15 March 2017 (UTC) See here

I see that in the past you have helped with the Ellis Paul article. I am trying to resolve a dispute regarding the article and am hoping you will lend support on the Talk:Ellis Paul page by offering a Third Party Opinion. In a nutshell, another editor removed a sound sample box that has been part of the article for 10 years. I would like to have a consensus to be able to add the sound sample back. Old game summaries

Hey Alaney2k! I was just fixing an oversight over at the List of Stanley Cup champions, and was hoping for some assistance. I know you've worked with these old newspaper articles in the past. How does one read that scoring summary exactly? The order is fine but the times make no sense. Any ideas? Also, I don't know if you have time for such a project, but using these newspaper summaries it would be great to modernize those old Stanley Cup articles, especially when it comes to scoring, etc. I may do a few to test it out later. @Jmj713: The times are intervals. If the first goal was 11 minutes in and the second at 13 minutes in, they used to mark that as 11 minutes, then 2 minutes. It probably is time to go over the old articles again. I've worked on a lot of articles since then. There is a group at Yahoo known as the "summary project" that has been putting old summaries into electronic form. I've not looked into in a while. Their intention was to get every last NHL summary entered. They are probably done by now. You have to be a Yahoo user and a member of the group. I think there was some interest in bringing their work under the SIHR umbrella, but I've not followed up. Alaney2k (talk) 04:17, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

When you are finished editing the page, type your edit summary and then choose "Review your changes".

In visual mode, you will see additions, removals, new links, and formatting highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

The wikitext diff is the same diff tool that is used in the wikitext editors and in the page history.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.

A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [1]

The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [2]

Other changes:

• You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [3]
• The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [4]
• The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the icon) for quicker access. [5] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [6]
• You can now create <chem> tags (sometimes used as <ce>) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [7]
• Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [8]
• The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [9]
• A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [10]
• There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K on a PC or Command+K on a Mac. [11]

Future changes

• The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [12]
• The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding &ooui=1 to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. • The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [14]

Marie-Claude Asselin

Hi,

This edit by an IP claiming to be the Marie-Claude Asselin of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada indicates that she is not the same person as the skier. I checked for any bios that would indicate the to are the same person, and am unable to find any bios in reliable sources that identify the Asselin of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada as the skier. The only ones that make that claim are wikipedia mirrors. Did you have any information that led you to adding this info in the article on Marie-Claude Asselin? -- Whpq (talk) 21:41, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Wow, I'm not sure. I'm certain that I found a source, but it must have been in error or I was confused. Then used the SDRCC ref, because I thought that was the right one to use. Watanabe in King of the Monsters?

I'm glad you've brought this up 'cause I've been considering bringing this up on the MonsterVerse talk page. The first mention of Watanabe being attached to King of The Monsters was on this article where it says that Watanabe is likely to return but after that, all sources now claim that Watanabe is part of the cast, even though there has been no outright confirmation stating Watanabe has signed on. I don't doubt that he'll come back but we do need a source that undisputedly 100% confirms that he has indeed signed on for the sequel, otherwise it would fall under WP:BALL. NFCC violations

Please stop restoring NFCC violations. Describing an image as "historic", or saying that an image illustrates a historic event, is nowhere near a sufficient justification for using a nonfree image. Nonfree content policy requires that use of an image "would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding". In addition, newspaper front pages and headlines are primarily textual, and in most cases their import can be adequately expressed in text alone. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). How do I get the book to highlight when I click on the authors name? I just put up some citations from Ryfle's and Ed.G's new Ishiro Honda book on the King Kong vs Godzilla page but when you click on the citations (#12 and #14) it won't highlight the book in the Bibliography section. I noticed you removed the table, which would probably be better off in Demographics of Toronto, however I'm conflicted with the info as in the Demographics page it's all over the place whether we're stating Toronto proper or the Greater Toronto Area CMA. At the moment the page should almost be called Demographics of the Greater Toronto Area. I think it was in that archive also. I was putting links like [[Toronto|Toronto, Ontario]] and I got a complaint about that, but I've not got a complaint about using the redirects, though I would prefer what I was doing before. Either [[Toronto|Toronto, Ontario]] or [[Toronto, Ontario]] is AFAIK acceptable under the Manual of Style. However, [[Toronto]], [[Ontario]] is problematic per MOS:LINK because it presents two links in such a way that they appear to be a single link, which is potentially confusing. I came here regarding the same issue. WP:CANPLACE explicitly states, "unless the article text or title has already established that the subject is Canadian, e.g., it is not necessary to identify the "Parliament of Canada" as being located in "Ottawa, Ontario, Canada"." In many of these articles, it's already established the subject is Canadian. The changes you are making to some of them are not in compliance with the policy you're citing. You recently changed a cite web reference from "publisher=" to "work=" with this edit with the edit summary of (publisher = > work (see citation doc), replaced: publisher=The Hollywood Reporter → work=The Hollywood Reporter (2) using AWB). I agree that the terms publisher and work - though often confused together - are not synonymous. For my own curiosity and to learn the why/wherefore, if you could post here the direct link to the doc you mention that would be helpful (mostly because "work=" as a parameter is not used by the 'cite web' template though I did find a related reference to the term in 'cite news' & I'm just curious). I agree with your edits, and I sometimes fix this issue, too. However, my watchlist apparently has a lot of articles with this problem. I'd personally suggest that this is a mostly-cosmetic issue not really worth fixing with automated tools. @NinjaRobotPirate: I started out just fixing the title of the work, but then I saw the use of publisher was widespread... I would be happy to jump on those errors. Anyway is there a way to find invalid dates using AWB? I know there is regex capability, but I've not really jumped into trying that. There are several regex formats, and most are complicated. This won't help you in an automated fashion but if you add importScript('User:Ohconfucius/script/Sources.js'); // User:Ohconfucius/script/Sources.js to your custom javascript page it will give you a link on your left hand toolbar that fixes many types of reference errors. But as mentioned it doesn't search out the errors for you, its really just for the pages you are on. I personally try to think to do it each time I am on a page, and once in a blue moon I just hit random pages and fix what I find. -DJSasso (talk) 16:46, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

I'm not sure, but I think most citation errors get dumped into Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting. I've never used AWB, so this isn't something that I've explored in depth. It does make me wonder if maybe someone converted Ohconfucius's above script into something you could run in AWB. I'm not sure who you'd ask about that. Yes. Although I would say the link is sort of broken. I have been changing things like [[Canada|Canadian]] to [[[Canadians|Canadian]], [[Canadian]] company to [[Canada|Canadian]]. There is a discussion of the first in this discussion and the second is a simple correction. If I get the Canadian wlinks to Canadians, then we can keep the above errors out of Wikipedia, because we can spot wlinks to Canadian as errors. I think the change on the page I saw (Blue (university sport)) was the wrong way, and should have been to [[Canada|Canadian]]. I've changed that one and am still not convinced that the overall migration from Canadian to Canadians|Canadian is really called for until the disambiguation issue has been sorted. I don't mind stopping the change of [[Canadian]] to [[Canadians|Canadian]] if you think that's against the rules and should be discussed. You are the first to mention it on these terms. (Long story but not related). But we discussed changing [[Canada|Canadians]] to [[Canadians|Canadian]] for people in the talk space for wp:canada and there was consensus this was better. There are times when I don't do that. E.g. Canadian troops is not best pointed to Canadians. BTW, you were right about Blue. That should be [[Canada|Canadian]]. I was wrong. Tired maybe I guess. website -> work replacements

Hello, I saw your edits on pages such those from The Matrix series, where you did no more than replace "website" to "work". Would you bother explaining what your point in those edits is? "Consistency" is not really a good reason when talking about random articles that are not interconnected, as the result is the exact same, except for three less characters in code; actually, quite the other way around, as you create inconsistency between the usage of "work" and "website" within an article. Furthermore you cite the website of The Hollywood Reported, so it is the website "The Hollywood Reported", why should that be wrong? And in the end, it just says "The Hollywood Reporter" anyways. Correct, I really do not like pointless edits done in a semi-automated manor that essentially do not change the article to the reader and only bump one's edit count. There is also WP:AWBRULES #4, "Do not make insignificant or inconsequential edits.", and the WP:MEATBOT guideline. You haven't come up with any good arguments for why you are doing them either, and could only reply with "what is your issue?", which I actually already stated above (pointlessly changing a tag to the same tag with a different name). Hmm. Thanks for pointing those out. I really didn't understand your objecting to my edits. I did not think either was wrong. You get caught up in something sometimes. I started out correcting cites of THR from "Hollywood Reporter" to "The Hollywood Reporter" (which is the publication title) and then got into making the cites consistent so that I could pick off similar errors more quickly in the future. I was thinking it might be useful in doing data searches in the future if this is significant. But it's true, the rendered output of a switch from website= to work= is not different. Well, considering you wanted to future-proof your editing, I can see where your side of the argument is coming from too. However, keep in mind that there are always subtle differences such as spaces inbetween code segments (|website=, | website=, | website =, etc.), and you cannot or just want to search and "fix" all of those (that would be exhausting). I also striked the last part of my previous response as it sound rather harsh, apologies for that.

On a side-note, if you are going to mass-fix THR (and similar) titles, are you using Regexes to make your life easier? E.g. [(?<!The) Hollywood Reporter → [The Hollywood Reporter and ticking the box in the Regex column should, if I am not mistaken, fix missing The's inside links, and similar could be done for italics and whatnot. A number of your changes were incorrect of recent regarding publishers. [15] should not have changed IMDB to a website, as the work is already present (it's BOM). Bones Allan ?

Hi,

You created the article Bones Allan and in 2008, you corrected Special:Diff/226247546 « allan, not allen » but apparently all the available references says Allen with an « e ».

Shouldn't we move this article to Bones Allen? (and maybe "Bones" Allen or Angus "Bones" Allen but here I'm not sure, Wikipedia:Article titles mention "Weird Al" Yankovic but it seems to be an exception).

Trophy links

I might hold off on changing all those links for trophies as you are probably editing against a common name. They are often referred to without the memorial in them in news articles. I think that would probably be the kind of thing you would need to discuss because its changing a lot of links on a lot of articles. There are plenty of cases where I have piped it in the text. The succession boxes used Hart sometimes and Hart Memorial sometimes. (After it was renamed) Not many, and that should not be an issue. Ice hockey at the 2014 Winter Olympics – Women's tournament

I disputed the removal of the russians in the statistical leaders because in the past the IIHF has not done this. However I know that you have a lot of experience in hockey editing so I opened a discussion about it because I realize that there may be other details that I am not aware of. The only time I can see that this has happened was the punch up in piestany when it was specifically included in the punishment. The curious thing about the 2014 tournament is that the IIHF has updated records and rankings, and left the russians as 6th.18abruce (talk) 16:29, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

@18abruce: I don't know, I'd go on what we know until the IIHF clearly expresses otherwise. The 2014 is only a bit unprecedented. The whole team was disqualified, so although only six players were given bans, the whole team was nullified. So we could be a bit ahead of the official documentation, but we can update as more info is released. If they had won a medal, they would have had to return it, and give it to the next team. There are similar instances in the Olympic files. We have a reference that they were disqualified, that should be enough. The Hockey Hall of Fame web site has numerous errors, and we rely on other sources. I think you have to be accurate rather than rely on one website. Alaney2k (talk) 18:44, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

I am not disputing that the 2014 team is DQ'd, it is just very odd what the IIHF has chosen to do. As for the player statistics I checked three different disqualified teams in the last ten years, each time the players stats remained, but how the game scores and other statistics were handled was inconsistent. Finally, that article needs to put the long tables into a separate article. It is not formatted per Wiki standard. There should not be long stretches of tables, then prose, then tables, etc. The format should be prose, with some small tables and graphics, fine.
