Dahomey Amazons

Hello, I've been following Dahomey Amazons lately due to working on The Woman King. It looks like you worked on this article around 2018-2019. Not sure if you're still interested in the topic, but it will likely become more popular with the release of the film. I've made a couple of edits to improve it but wanted to see if you see any further edits that could be made. Thanks, Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 19:55, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

WikiProject Women in Green October 2022 Good Article Editathon

Hello Alanna the Brave:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Editathon event in October 2022!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2022, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) editathon event – Wildcard Edition! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to any and all women and women's works during the event period. Want to improve an article about a Bollywood actress? Go for it. A pioneering female scientist? Absolutely. An award-winning autobiography by a woman? Yes! GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to receive a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

GA Editathon

I'm interested in participating, but I'm not a member of the Women in Green WikiProject. Am I disqualified? I'm relatively new, so I'd need some information to start. The first thing I can think of is finding out if the article I've chosen to work on is/has been a GA before. Would that disqualify it? -- Pete Best Beatles (talk) 05:41, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Pete Best Beatles! I'm glad you're interested in participating, and yes, you may sign up for the event even though you're not a member of WikiProject Women in Green. You cannot choose to work on an article that is currently a GA article, but if your chosen article used to have GA status but was delisted, then it's a perfectly acceptable candidate, as it likely needs improvements of some kind now. You can confirm whether your chosen article is currently a GA article by looking for the Good Article symbol (a green plus sign) in the upper righthand corner, or by checking its talk page for more info. Let me know if you have any other questions. Best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 14:42, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
My first question is about choice of article to focus on. I selfishly hope I can choose the article, and from my list to boot. Also, I'm not afraid of hard work, but I don't want to devote a month of work to a project that probably wouldn't achieve GA status, for reasons I don't know about. I have my list of articles (none of which had a green plus sign that I could see) in preferred order, but your project might prioritize that list differently, and I'd want to take that into account. Finally, do multiple people ever end up working on the same article, a la an edit conflict? Do people cooperate on an article? If it's first come, first served I'd hate to take an important article and then botch it as a newbie (you could check out my User page to see if you think I have the chops). The articles that interest me would be Riot grrrl first, followed by Patti Smith, Lucinda Williams and Kathleen Hanna (all tied for second place), with Joan Jett receiving the consolation prize. Are these good choices to begin with? Don't worry, I'll have more questions after I nail down a topic, but for now I'll do my homework and read the Good articles article. -- Pete Best Beatles (talk) 22:33, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
@Pete Best Beatles: All good questions. Here's what I think: you can pick any topic about women or women's works for this event, but because you're just learning about the GA nomination process, you may want to choose a smaller, less hefty article to start with than the choices you've just listed. Riot grrrl, Lucinda Williams, Kathleen Hanna and the others all have enormous articles, and any one of those could translate into a huge amount of work (one of the first steps toward a GA nomination usually involves checking every existing citation/source in the article for accuracy, and that takes a long time for larger Wikipedia articles). You can totally collaborate with another editor on an article -- feel free to ask someone, or post to the Women in Green event talk page to see if you can find a partner. During October, once you've started working on your chosen article for the event, you can also request a "mini-review", and an experienced Women in Green editor will take a look and tell you if your project still has any major issues that need addressing. Best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 00:30, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
If we're allowed to do bands, I'd love to do Bikini Kill - it's shorter (23 references) and well within my purview (it was Kathleen Hanna's riot grrrl band). -- Pete Best Beatles (talk) 03:41, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
@Pete Best Beatles: That looks like a great choice! Alanna the Brave (talk) 12:59, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
I know I'm late to the game, buy I looked at all the references in my GA article to be Bikini Kill today, and out of twenty-three references, I have problems with or questions about twelve of them. Is there someone or a place where I can spell these issues out and get some advice on how to proceed? -- Pete Best Beatles (talk) 06:03, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
@Pete Best Beatles: If you're wondering whether the article's sources are considered reliable, I would suggest checking the perennial sources list (and its archives) to see if there's any consensus from Wikipedia editors, or by starting a new discussion at the Reliable Sources Noticeboard. Alternatively, if you have specific questions about GA sourcing/referencing, you can also pose those questions at the Women in Green Editathon talk page and see if other participants have advice. Best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 15:15, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

GA assessment (an earnest entreaty)

Thanks for your help with the Bikini Kill assessment. Obviously, I can't do all that work in one evening (the fault is obviously all mine), but I'm committed to completing the task. I've added another GA assessment request to the top of the list...I implore you to assess it also, so I can work on it in the near future also. If you can't leave the information on that page, let me know where it is, or leave the assessment on my talk page. This article is within my bailiwick - I've made some minor edits to it in the past. Thanks in advance, Pete Best Beatles (talk) 01:19, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

@Pete Best Beatles: I'm glad you found the Bikini Kill assessment helpful! Don't worry about not being able to do all the work at once -- you can take your time. Unfortunately, I can't complete another article assessment at this time, as your request was technically posted after October 31 (UTC) and I've got too much else on my plate this week. The 20-minute assessment requests are now closed until our next editathon event. I encourage you to keep improving Bikini Kill, and if you have any other questions about the GA process, you're welcome to post them to the main WikiProject Women in Green talk page. Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Thebiguglyalien submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Alanna the Brave to be Editor of the Week for her incredible work at Women in Green. She's been involved with Women in Green for years, and she deserves much of the credit for making it into what it is today. It is her attention to the project that has kept is alive and growing. Her initiative in organizing project editathons has inspired a huge influx of high quality contributions while accommodating new and inexperienced editors, and the October 2022 Wildcard Edition Editathon has been the most successful yet. This is to say nothing of the work that she has done in content contributions of her own, having created and substantially improved dozens of articles about notable women.
