Video games set in locations[edit]
Hey there, I've come across some of your edits to video game articles where you've added categories in the vein of video games set in X location/timeperiod/etc. Some of these edits seem a bit excessive, for example your additions here this list here. That list was already problematic in that the game overall does not take place on each of the locations listed in an equal capacity. When a game or piece of media, for example pirate-themed, takes place in many locations such as the example above, listing every location as a setting is also counter productive in that it devalues existing, more general and more broadly-understood categories like films set in the Caribbean. In the end it amounts to a kind of listcruft that really doesn't help the article much. Eik Corell (talk) 22:05, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- Well, if you would bother yourself reading the info at least a bit, you would know, that the game is set not only in the Caribbean (Florida and other future US states, for example). Let alone the fact, that more info in categories you have is better, because it cant hurt main article. This categories are made to give people the ability to easily search through games settings locations. For example again - they want to play a game with Florida as setting, so they go to this category and see most of this games (where categories added). You also deleted information about developers countries together with all setting locations. Rude. And last part, in terms of other articles - do you know that Turkey and Singapore are not even close to Caribbean? Just checking. AlbertTheSmart (talk) 04:57, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- More info is not necessarily a good thing -- Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. More specifically to your point about people being able to use it for finding games that take place in a specific setting, this touches on Wikipedia not being a catalogue, and in a smaller way, Wikipedia not being a game-guide. When there are few major settings, e.g a movie as taking place in California, it's probably fine to list both that and specifically Los Angeles, but any such categorization has to be balanced by significance to the plot or understanding of the movie, that's where the listcruft/indiscriminate information things I linked come into play - When a more broad setting has been established, and none of the specific locations stand out in significance to understanding the movie, listing that the movie is set on 123 Fakestreet, 321 Fakestreet, and 213 Fakestreet just because those appear at some point in the movie does not help the reader understand the subject better. A more immediate example of all of this would be the Call of Duty series games featuring settings ranging from WW2 to future conflicts, but also containing multiplayer maps that have nothing to do with these main settings of the game. In light of that, to then claim that the latest installment is set on the Titanic because one map takes place there is ludicrous, that's what I mean by devaluing/confusing the reader thing. Again, all of this ties into WP:IINFO; there has to be a valid reason to add this kind of trivia, and drawing on the Assassins Creed Black Flag edit I mentioned, I'm not seeing anything in the article explaining how for example the island of Saint Lucia plays into the gameplay or plot. - I really undestand what you are trying to say, sending this page Wikipedia not being a catalogue ("Wikipedia not being a game guide" is another thing i think, because it affects main page mostly, not categories). But again - all this categories with "games set in" exist here, so someone needs it i guess. Me, for example, i am using it very often, because game's setting is always important for me, since i am in love with geography and history for whole my life. There are no sites to sort this games with their locations like this, and i thought it will be useful to have it for pupular games at least.
