Re: French grammar question ...

Hi there ... I saw you responded to a question I asked over at WP:RD/L about French grammar. You mentioned "Polish style" a couple of times. I've never heard that term before. Sorry! I am not an English native speaker and I often need to consult my English-French dictionnary. I wanted to translate un style soigné, written with care, using good grammar, and I made a mistake. I should have written "polished style". Polish as French can write with a polished style! Thanks, AlsoSryt, for your input to help clarify the terms of my recent query on the Language Ref Desk. I do read French somewhat, but lack an idiomatic or educated understanding. As I'm compiling some material on the subject's WWII resistance activities for improving the page, I looked over the extant text before I make any changes. Thank you, AldoSyrt, for providing such substantive information regarding this recent Language reference desk query. I'll transfer the relevant content to the article's Talk page for future reference. Your input and others' tripped my period-language sensor, i.e. I suspect the institution may have undergone some change of nature since May 1945 even if the name remained intact. Joseph Spiess

Many thanks for that - you're right - I hadn't seen your contribution. It's interesting that all other sources say that Spiess was Alsatian, but he seems to have been born in the Seine Department. Also that his "knighthood" was awarded so soon after the first flight of his "balloon" and before the French army had rejected it. Merci encore, 21:25, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Sorry to pester you here, but regarding the German/French translation at the language board...

...I think it should be "...l'avion de l'Air France.." not "... l'avion d'Air France..", but I could be wrong. You don't bother me at all. I am a French native speaker and I live in France. Trust me, we say "l'avion d'Air France" or "l'avion de la compagnie Air France", never "l'avion de l'Air France". This latter phrase sounds akward to French ears.

Example from the French newspaper "Le Parisien" http://www.leparisien.fr/faits-divers/un-avion-d-air-france-atterrit-en-urgence-au-belarus-09-12-2012-2392835.php. Another from "Le Monde" (la référence des quotidiens français) http://www.lemonde.fr/societe/article/2012/03/06/un-avion-d-air-france-deroute-apres-une-fausse-alarme-incendie_1652306_3224.html.

Abandonner ? Il n'y a pas de compétition. Vous avez raison, la véritable citation est "La garde meurt mais ne se rend pas !". Cependant l'utilisation de et à la place de mais n'est pas un non-sens. La signification est assez proche. Exemple tiré du dictionnaire de l'Académie française avec et donnant une idée d'opposition : "Vous riez et moi je pleure" ou dans le Grevisse (un grammairien belge) : "Je l'héberge et il me vole". On pourrait aussi bien dire : "Vous riez mais moi je pleure" ou "Je l'héberge mais il me vole". Il y a une très légère différence que j'aurais du mal à expliquer. À vous lire sur WP vous avez un très très bon niveau de Français. À votre santé ! (Je suis obligé d'utiliser le menu "Special characters" de l'éditeur Wiki pour faire le a accent grave en majuscule, on y trouve aussi le c cédille mais celui-là je l'ai sur mon clavier.) — AldoSyrt (talk) 16:34, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

I just discovered that at 00:10, 1 February 2020 you restored a complaint against Future Perfect at Sunrise to Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case. Well done! This post is necessarily somewhat cryptic - if edit filter 880 was disabled it could be written in plain English. Can you do this? There is no justification for the global lock of the editor from Hackney, London [...]. She has not edited crosswiki and has not communicated on en:wp since Anna Frodesiak enabled talkpage access at 22:30, 21 November 2016 and removed it one minute later. As Anna is currently incommunicado behind the bamboo curtain can you restore it on her behalf?

Troublemakers have been imputing the misconduct of other people to [...]. See the discussion at m:User talk:IFried (WMF)#Harassment by Camouflaged Mirage referring to a post to m:User talk:Dreamy Jazz at 12:58, 3 November 2020. Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry's mistake was to block Contribsx as a sockpuppet or agent of Hackneymarsh or Grant Shapps without filing at SPI. He is apparently unaware that Contribsx is female. He belatedly filed at SPI but was unable to stop the inevitable de-sysop which followed. Future Perfect at Sunrise has been de-sysopped, but still has access to the tools despite blocking people as sockpuppets of [---] without filing at SPI or, if someone has filed at SPI, without reporting in. When the inevitable complaints come in he unblocks or not as the fancy takes him [2].

Ian.thomson also does this. At 12:04, 16 July 2016 he claimed that it was "proven" that an editor was a sockpuppet of [---]. There was no reasoning and no SPI was filed. He deleted two pages, describing his action as "mass deletion of pages created by [---]." He should likewise be de-sysopped (he received a police warning on his user talkpage recently). Mister Sneeze A Lot was indefinitely blocked when he complained that editors were being indefinitely blocked as sockpuppets of [----] without any reason being given or SPI filed just to get rid of them. This goes on all the time. Two examples: it has been alleged (without reasoning or SPI investigation) that [---] is a sockpuppet of both Abnormallylong and the Best Known For IP. 194.35.118.103 (talk) 15:08, 15 November 2020 (UTC)

Looking at FP@S' log. the last eight entries have been links of various IP addresses to alleged registered accounts.
