Wiki-hello[edit]

Thanks for pointing out the status of WikiTravel:Image:wiki-hello.jpg. It's been replaced by a blank image and put on our VFD list. --ESP 15:34, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Love your work on HelpDesk-l[edit]

We have a way better marketing strategy than you. First, our content is FREE -- I just about died laughing this morning when I read this one! Thanks for the quick pick me up and all of the work you do answering those emails. .:.Jareth.:. babelfish 14:19, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I "borrowed" the boilerplates from the OTRS. ;) .:.Jareth.:. babelfish 14:58, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Your ad[edit]

I saw your distinct ad on the pump for HelpDesk-l.

I'm interested in helping out, although maybe not getting the stuff straight to my inbox... Tell me, how is response currently being managed? Are responses sent to the list so that helpers know what's been replied to? Is it possible to manage through the web interface? I assume responses are made to user-pages if they are given.

If I'm able to understand a protocol for replying to such a quantity of mail, I may be able to assist!

jnothman talk 06:36, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll have a go but don't yet have enough experience to answer everything. And I certainly don't have the time. Still =)
Wrt the afd helper, I'm glad you've decided not to bite the rest of my head off =P. I'll try improve the documentation some time soon. With regard to requiring comments of a minimum length, I do find many cases where the nominator or above comments have just said anything you can say about the article and per nom is really the most appropriate thing to say without wasting other browsers' time. So I don't think I'm going to limit that. It's the intention that needs more than 10 characters, but we can't measure that yet (if we could, it would make VF and AFD a whole lot easier). jnothman talk 07:46, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lol! I'm not sure what to reply to an email that complains of printing CMYK color model causing a computer crash. But the email is signed from Xerox Corp so one would assume someone on there end should know something about printing issues! jnothman talk 12:18, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Just thought I'd drop by and leave you a note of thanks for responding to my RfA! .:.Jareth.:. babelfish 16:02, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

You note the bulk of my edits are to AfD. You will also have noted that I have authored or principally rewritten a dozen or more articles, including Beethoven and his contemporaries, Franz Babinger, Santa María la Real, etc, etc, so I don't believe my credibility should be called into question. You will also note that I have responded to the question of the GNAA-led hunt to oust blogs on the Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard which should make my vote to delete understandable and not subject to such a gratuitous action. Wikipediology[edit]

I'd like to ask those fellows who have not indicated whether or not they grant permission for a wikibio on them to please do so soon. I'd also appreciate it everyone could expand or create the wikibios for which permission has been granted. The wikibio project simply won't be useful unless fellows actively participate; so I'd like to issue a challenge that each fellow contribute at least one sentence to two wikibios. I'll be on wikibreak for the next week and when I get back there will be prizes in store for the fellows who have the three highest edit counts on wikibios. Thanks. -JCarriker 22:33, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your monobook skin[edit]

Firstly, thank you SOOO much for such an awesome monobook skin, which I've pretty much stolen whole-heartedly. The auto-saved messages on talk pages are hugely helpful, and it's just all-around awesome. Secondly, I was wondering what browser you use. I could not get the sub-menu tab (for user talk pages and such) to work on Firefox, only for Iexplore. Do you have the same issue? Or are there coding things that I could change? Also, I coppied a script called "autovfd" and its brother "autocopyvio", but neither of those seem to work on any browser. It's been a while since I've coded in jscript (yeah, I know...), and was wondering if you could help me out or point me in the right direction. I had another question about my sig, if you can help, but I guess one thing at a time. Thanks in advance, Mysekurity 22:33, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for getting back to me (and sorry for placing this in somewhat of a harder location to find when you get the Orange Bar of Death...), and thanks for helping me out; it works great! But I was wondering why the "talk messages" menu doesn't show up when there's more text on the page...It just doesn't seem useful for other {{test}} messages, and was wondering if you had time to help me out a little. Thanks! -Mysekurity(have you seen this?) 07:41, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I have the same message box history thing (Most likely stolen from you, but first and foremost stolen from the late, great Essjay), and thus was able to find where you messaged me. I'll try working on it when I can, but I was also wondering why the close AfD box had a menu, but the talk page AfD leaver....thing...didn't. I'll work on it when I can, and thanks again. As for when and where, it occurs when I try to edit or add a new comment to a User talk: page that isn't empty (e.g. new/redlinked). It isn't a huge deal, but any help you could give me, or anyone you could referr me to—Jessie W, etc.—would be helpful. Thanks again, Mysekurity(have you seen this?) 20:26, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alphax,

Thank you very much for your support on my RfA. I was both surprised and delighted about the amount of support votes and all the kind words! If I can ever help with anything or if you have any comments about my actions as an admin, please let me know! Regards, JoanneB 13:30, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

GraemeL's RFA[edit]

Hi Alphax,

I am now an administrator (who will not set you any exams) and would like to thank you for your support on my RfA. I was very surprised at the number of votes and amount of and kind comments that I gathered. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I mess up in the use of my new powers. --GraemeL (talk) 15:29, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ianblair23's RfA[edit]

G'day Alphax,

I would like to thank you for supporting me on my RfA. It closed with the final tally of 57/0/0. I can only hope I can live up to the expectations that this wonderful community of ours demands from each of its administrators. If you ever need anything, please just let me know. Cheers! -- Ianblair23 (talk) 03:16, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for an honest opinion...

I'm working on the article motorized bicycle. I created a timeline. It is nominated for deletions. I was wondering if you could give me your opinion of the subject either at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Timeline of Motorized bicycle history or on my user talk page. Thank you. (p.s.: Don't forget to look at the main page.) --CyclePat 19:11, 23 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Does Helpdesk really need help?[edit]

Hi, I responded to your call-to-arms and joined the mailing list. Maybe I am missing something, but I have to say it seems like it is pretty under control. It also seems like it is by and large routine correcting people's misapprehensions, occasionally fixing vandalism - you could almost automate responses. I'm getting the list via "Digest" and instead of sending one giant email every day it sends a dozen, only in batches of 8 or so, which I find quite bizarre.

I'm also not glued to my desk -- and it seems most requests are answered by the time I even get to read them. Am I totally not the right person for this task or what? (Is this in fact a question I should ask on the helpdesk? ;))

cheers --pfctdayelise 14:39, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Question about signatures[edit]

Hi Alphax -- Can you tell me if there has been some change in how MediaWiki renders signatures? for years I have used the following in my preferences with no problem:

BCorr]]</font><font color=chartreuse>|</font>[[User talk:Bcorr|Брайен

and it generated this:

BCorr|Брайен 15:54, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

For the last couple of weeks (or so) it now generates what you'll see at the end of this post. I've tried removing the color, the Cyrillic characters, etc., and I can't even get to work with a talk page in there. Please let me know if you have any info or ideas about this.

Thanks, BCorr</font><font color=chartreuse>|</font>[[User talk:Bcorr|&#1041;&#1088;&#1072;&#1081;&#1077;&#1085;]] 15:54, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Javascript[edit]

Hi. I'm trying to change some inline CSS using javascript; my total knowledge of javascript was accumulated overnight, so it's still a little patchy. Any help would be much appreciated. Specifically, what I'm having trouble with is having a link update the inline styles for the body.

<body id="body" style="background:#FFF;">
<a href="#" onclick="document.getElementById(body).style.setProperty('background','#000');">Hello.zip</a>

Thanks. // Pathoschild 16:53, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, I eventually just worked around it. ;) // Pathoschild 17:10, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you are categorized as a Wikipedian by alignment. If you are in to userboxes, there are now infoboxes available using a standard template. See the alignment category page for details. xaosflux Talk/CVU 18:26, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I notice you have removed the image, however I quote from the image copyright tag: "It is believed that we have permission to use this for promotional purposes; e.g., on a user page." Therefore this removal sends a mixed image - may I ask you remove the image from {{userbox browser|mozilla firefox}} and change the images copyright tag or revert your removal. See Template:Userbox firefox's talk page. Ian13ID:540053 15:51, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RfA thanks from Deathphoenix[edit]

Hi Alphax,

I just wanted to thank you for your moo (?) vote in my RfA. To tell you the truth, I was surprised by all the support I've gotten. I never saw myself as more than an occasional Wiki-hobbyist.

My wife sends her curses, as Wikipedia will likely suck up more of my time. She jokingly (I think) said she was tempted to log on to Wikipedia just to vote Oppose and let everyone know that she didn't want her husband to be an admin.

I'll make sure your trust in me is founded. --Deathphoenix 15:27, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the warm welcome. I will try to keep contributing as much as my 60-h job permits;) Happy new year (soon)! --Carboxen 06:58, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gay and Lesbian Kingdom[edit]

Dear Sir, Much of the information on the GAY and Lesbian Kingdom page is wrong and is written by an ex member of the Gay Government that was sacked. I feel the article needs to be removed as it can not be edited or changed. the original article was ok as it was informative and was not personal however the changes made since are all incorrect and cannot be proven nor are there any sorce to varify what the author is stating as fact is indeed true. Thanks for your RFA support[edit]

Hi Alphax/archive05! I have been on a refreshing wikibreak for the last week, so this is a belated thank-you for supporting my adminship nomination (and not detesting my script design). Happy New Year (if that's your kind of thing)! jnothman talk 18:23, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Jan Akkerman[edit]

Re Jan Akkerman's bio: this was probably translated from the Dutch original - there's nothing wrong with that, but if somebody takes the trouble to correct or revise some of the Dinglish (is active instead of has been active)or misused musical terms (note instead of tone, for a note can only be described in terms of pitch and duration) or adds a pun on metal that made Jan the Man himself laugh out loud at a Vondelpark gig, I feel it's a little unreasonable to just delete these additions. The reason why Akkerman is not included among Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists is, as I wrote, unfathomable. I asked a lifelong (British)fan of Akkerman's to clarify this matter, and he came up with the xenophobia mentioned. Jan himself commented on Neil Young's technical ability in a documentary by quipping that the latter sounds like a "bromvlieg in een puntzak", so much for the Canadian wailer that sure enough does appear on the RS list! It may get lost in translation, but the reference is to a buzzing insect in a wrapper from which the Dutch tend to eat either liquorice or French fries. Happy New year, anyway and please let me know what you think. Btw the number covers a server that apparently includes various contributors, so I'm not responsible for all of the stuff listed under this code - it's mainly music, AmLit and Meher Baba. 202.150.34.8 02:01, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA[edit]

I have decided to withdraw my nomination, due to growing oppose votes due to my lack of experence (and because of userboxes?). I will now aim to continue, and broadern my scope from userboxes. I copied your monobook and its useful. I only found it by the user scripts project and the fact it said forced edit summaries. I would like a contibs tab like the 0 on user's user page and talk page. Also can you comment out the things for admins that I have in my monobook (its just a copy of your one) maybe you could use an if statement in your monobook to make it easy for people to get a good monobook without certain things. --Adam1213 Talk + 23:58, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for forwarding this to me. You can put me as one of the contacts for hindi and gujarati wikipedia wherever you want. The problem in the note that you mentioned has been fixed. An Esperanzial note[edit]

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
