The Special Barnstar
This Special Barnstar is given to Nolelover for wikifying 9 articles, a total of 18,083 words. Thanks for participating, and please be sure to help out at our next drive! Sumsum2010·T·C 02:40, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

TW warning

Please be careful with your use of TW. As you know, you should exercise caution when using "Anti-vandalism tools, such as Twinkle, Huggle, and rollback should not be used to undo good-faith changes in content disputes". Sephiroth storm (talk) 09:38, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, could you tell me what exactly you're talking about? Sorry, but I really have no idea. Nolelover It's football season! 17:05, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Ahh, if you're talking about this edit, I used the "restore this version" button that is above the revision info of the version I wanted to go back to. Short of just editing the entire page and making the corrections, this seemed the best way. I sure as heck wasn't going to undo seven edits one after the other. Hope this answers your questions/concerns. Thanks for letting me know though. Nolelover It's football season! 18:12, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive news

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation
GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

Undone speedy delete tag

I've removed the speedy delete tag you placed at S. K. Lawton, and reffed it up. In my opinion this shouldn't have been tagged for speedy deletion since its claim of notability was not obviously false, and should of followed the guidelines given at A7:

"If the claim's credibility is unclear, you can improve the article yourself, propose deletion, or list the article at articles for deletion."

Happy editing. --AerobicFox (talk) 00:06, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks - I had that page on my watchlist, and noticed you take that tag off. I wasn't really paying attention when I tagged that page, so I didn't do any follow-up research. Again, thanks. Nolelover It's football season! 00:12, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Please help me dude..

Heyyo, Nolelover. This is Nivedit once again back to trouble you with his problems!! Anyways, can you tell me how to count the number of words in an article? Please tell me as fast as you can.

Regards, Nivedit Mishra — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nivedit Mishra (talkcontribs) 03:34, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

It's no trouble. First off all, before I start all the techno-babble, understand that you don't need to know how to operate the program to still gain credit. If need be, I can look at the articles you've wikified and tell you how many words are there and give you credit. That said, here's what you'll have to do:

To add the script that calculates page size:

  1. If you have JavaScript enabled, go here to access your skin's .js file.
    • If you do not have JavaScript enabled and either do not wish to or cannot, go to Special:Preferences and click on the Appearance tab. In the very first section, Skin, locate the skin that is selected and click on the Custom JS next to your selected skin.
  2. Click Edit on the page that opened.
  3. Add the following code to the page and save it: {{subst:js|User:Dr pda/prosesize.js}}
  4. Reload the cache.
    • If you are using Internet Explorer, press Ctrl-F5
    • If you are using Firefox/Safari for Windows, hold down Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R); for Mac, press Command-R.
    • If you are using Opera/Konqueror, press F5.
  5. To test it out go to any random article. If you look under the Toolbox menu on the far left of the screen there will be a link for Page size. The backlog elimination drive uses the number of words listed under Prose size (text only).
  6. Go wikify!

These are the directions from our project's page. It explains far better then I could, although I can certainly help you out if you get stuck. Again though, if it's too hard, just tell me which articles you've done (after February 1st!), and I'll give you credit. Nolelover It's football season! 22:55, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, your method worked. Just tell me, when is this drive going to end, I mean on which date? Nivedit Mishra 09:26, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

It will end on the 28th of February - the entire month of February. Nolelover It's football season! 13:15, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

No problem. Will you list your articles here? Nolelover It's football season! 18:41, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes, if that's okay. I'll just try to do it in groups, like I did last time. Thank you, PrincessofLlyr royal court 19:31, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

I'm getting started early this time:

Thanks, PrincessofLlyr royal court 15:55, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

I got those, and here's a constructive note. In this article, there's a link at the end that could be put between <ref></ref> tags. That should always be a part of the wikification, and I know you now how to do it, since you did it here. Also, this article could've used a few more wikilinks (Newark and West Orange, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, stuff like that). Anyways, good job, and keep wikifying. :) Nolelover It's football season! 16:46, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the tips. I will fix those articles and keep in mind for the future. PrincessofLlyr royal court 17:09, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

I got them all, and a very good job! Nolelover It's football season! 14:20, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

A small problem that requires some assistance

I'm a little uncertain on how to deal with User:Scarmudgeon and I'm hoping you can help me out. He's been posting an analysis on RuneScape that contains sources which look a bit dubious at a glance. He's reverted my attempts to take the material out without any discussion or reasoning and I'm presently waiting for a response here and at his talk page, but from what I've seen I'm not hopeful. If we can't resolve this peacefully, what can I do? 1ForTheMoney (talk) 13:26, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, his response at his talk page doesn't fill me with hope for a good resolution. I can't break 3RR to deal with this one, so I'll have to wait for a response here. 1ForTheMoney (talk) 14:02, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
I have responded on the RuneScape talk page. I'm going offline for a few hours, but should be back soon. Nolelover It's football season! 14:38, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I don't know if this will be the end of it, but there you go. 1ForTheMoney (talk) 14:39, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
No prob. I'm going to church in a bit but should be back on later in the afternoon. Two editors reverting his edits might discourage him enough anyway. Notice that he also has a history of adding bad refs to MMORPGs. Nolelover It's football season! 14:46, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
I saw the discussions at Talk:Endless Ages, and they're pretty revealing. I dislike talking about editors without their knowledge, but if this is anything to go by, it doesn't look like this will end well. 1ForTheMoney (talk) 15:15, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Get going!

The February 2011 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive has begun. Please get started, as the drive aims to wikify over 2,000 articles this month. We're going to need all the firepower we can get, so please remind your friends to join up as well. In case you didn't know, wikification is fairly simple: just add wiki markup, links, and similar formatting. Thanks for joining; we're looking forward to an exciting time this month!

GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics
  • 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
  • One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
  • Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
  • Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.
Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering the barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Thank you for participating in this year's first Backlog elimination drive! We hope to see you in March.

Hey Nolelover, I am new to this and having a difficult time with external links and inline citations. I've read the directions, but still having a difficult time. On "Michael P Nash" I've attached some links but could only get one to link up correctly.

Example,

the Reuters article should be linked to the 4th sentence just after COP15 Conference. The January 30th Redford article from the NY Times should like the second to the last sentence in the paragraph.

Sorry, don't mean to bother you. Really tried to figure this out first. Man is it confusing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible for you to link these up.

By the way, FSU is back, 1# class for recruits.

Hey Frank, thanks for the message. I went ahead and fixed up the article, and I'll try to walk you through it. In this edit, my first, I took all the links you had provided and put them between <ref></ref> tags at the appropriate places. This gave me a rough version of all the references. Then I cheated and put the article through a program called Reflinks, which does all the hard work. :) That was my second edit. If you've need anything else, just tell me. BTW, please put for tildes (~~~~) after every post you make on a talk page. This automatically puts your signature. Go 'Noles -- Nolelover It's football season! 15:40, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

The February 2011 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive is almost complete. Please help, as the backlog is still very large. Still exceeding 20,000 articles! The goal is 18,000 or less. Mistake

tb|MisterTooMuch

When you sent me the message I did not have a user name. The one above is, however, my user name. This seems to be what my identification was when I edited the FSU football page Editing User talk:71.180.199.79 (section). I should add, however, that my correction on the FSU page was proper. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MisterTooMuch (talkcontribs) 18:11, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

I believe you are talking about this edit? Why would you say that removing a true statement is a "proper correction"? Nolelover It's football season! 18:16, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

It is not a true statement. It is completely false. There is no way that FSU had 14 straight top 5 finishes. How could they have had 14 straight top 5 finishes when they did not beat UF 14 straight times? Loosing your last game almost certainly takes you out of the top 5. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MisterTooMuch (talkcontribs) 18:29, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Well...they did. Here are some links: eighth paragraph, first line, second sentence, sixth to last paragraph, first line. I can find many more if you'd like. Their incredible run from 1987 to 2000 is one of the most well-known feats in the sport. Back in the day, one loss, and to a top ranked in-state rival at that (as Florida was), wouldn't drop you as far as it would today, with many more teams ready to jump ahead of you nowadays. Nolelover It's football season! 18:53, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

During that span they had six two-loss seasons. Still a great season, but you along with the wiki page and all of the other links you posted are wrong. Find me a credible source like ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Fox Sports, CBS Sports, ABC Sports, or anything that does not seem biased. You should be ashamed to post something that is wrong just because you "love" the team. It is not far to history and all of the other school's who are being robbed of their accomplishments. FSU has a lot of success, do not ruin it with a lie. If every team began to lie to make themselves seem better, there will be no point of keeping track of records. If I am not satisfied with proof soon I will re-move the alleged streak from the FSU wiki page and take further appropriate actions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MisterTooMuch (talkcontribs) 21:04, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

Wait, wait, wait. You don't believe the AP? (first line) Well sorry, but I simply don't have the time to find a bunch more links for you, so here's the last one: ESPN. If, you don't accept these, then there's nothing more I can do to convince you. Should you attempt to remove that sentence however, your edits will be reverted and you will be reported. Removing that statement from the FSU page constitutes vandalism and will be treated as such. Also, I made this statement earlier and then removed it, but I'll ask it again: are you really a college football fan? Nolelover It's almost football season! 14:43, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Your sources from the AP and ESPN are right on. Congrats, you have won our little battle (although the AP actually referred to top 5 appearances and not finishes). I have never seen a decent bit of proof to support the 14-season top 5 run, until now. Very Impressive! I am a big college football fan. I like all football (even pee-wee). Believe it or not, I actually like FSU. They are not my favorite team, but I really do like them and have since the days of Derrick Brooks. FYI it was your sources that changed my mind, and not your "vandalism" threat. My actions could never have been seen as vandalism since I was trying to correct what I believed to be a mistake on wikipedia where such actions are welcomed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MisterTooMuch (talkcontribs) 08:08, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Well then I do apologize for making you out to be a vandal/troll, but your actions did not look like those of a good-faith contributor. Anyway, I hope you don't think of this as a battle - we have enough problems without editors always trying to be right. Nolelover It's almost football season! 12:44, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 79 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 64 have participated. Interest is high due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page, and many new and first-time copy editors have joined us for the drive. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Many thanks to those editors who have been helping out at the Requests page. We have assisted in the promotion of seven articles to Good article status so far this month.

Progress report

We have already achieved our target of reducing the overall backlog by 10%; however, we have more work to do with the 2009 backlog. We have almost eliminated May 2009 and we only have some 700 articles left from 2009. It is excellent progress, so let's concentrate our fire power on the remaining months from 2009. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive report

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive! This newsletter summarizes the March drive and other recent events.

Participation
GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

There were 99 signups for the drive; of these, 70 participated. Interest was high mainly due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page. We had a record-breaking 84 articles listed on the Requests page in March; 11 of these have been promoted to Good article status so far. Several of our recent efforts have received Featured Article status as well, and the GOCE is becoming a solid resource for the Wikipedia community. Many thanks to editors who have been helping out at the Requests page and by copy editing articles from the backlog.

Progress report

Remarkable progress was made in reducing the backlog this month, as we now have fewer than 500 articles remaining from 2009. We are well under the 4,000-article mark for the total number remaining in the queue. Since our backlog drives began in May 2010 with 8,323 articles, we have cleared more than 53% of the backlog. A complete list of results and barnstars awarded can be found here. Barnstars will be distributed over the next week. If you enjoyed participating in our event, you may also like to join the Wikification drives, which are held on alternate months to our drives. Their April drive has started.

The Guild of Copy Editors – May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive

The Guild of Copy Editors invite you to participate in the May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive began on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). The goals of this backlog elimination drive are to eliminate as many articles as possible from the 2009 backlog and to reduce the overall backlog by 15%. ! NEW ! In an effort to encourage the final elimination of all 2009 articles, we will be tracking them on the leaderboard for this drive.

Flickr photos

Sorry, if this seems unnecessary, but I have no experience in this area and I wasn't sure who to go to. I'd like to get a photo for Mona Plummer Aquatic Center and I was looking at all the photos on Flickr under CC-BY. Anyway, are any of these photos useable (they looked touched up, though I don't know what effect that is), and if they are, how would I set about uploading them? Thanks, Nolelover It's almost football season! 16:06, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons has a help page on that at Commons:Flickr files and a special upload page at commons:Upload work from Flickr. If you have further questions, your best bet would be to ask again there but those resources should explain most questions. Regards SoWhy 16:30, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
Ok, but what about the photos themselves. All of the look like they've had some sort of optical effect used (I can't remember the name right now), so are they acceptable for use here on WP? Nolelover It's almost football season! 16:37, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
That really depends on the photo and the effect used. Often photos are retouched, improving brightness and contrast for example, which is fine. Unfortunately, there is no rule for when it's fine and when not. As a rule of thumb, I'd say it's fine as long as the changes are merely to improve the picture and not to distort or change it in any way (although it might be okay for example if the picture of a building has been edited to remove people from it). If you know a picture has been edited afterwards, you should usually say so in the image's description page. As for the pictures you linked to, I don't see why they shouldn't be used here, unless the actual subject looks nothing like those pictures which of course I cannot determine without knowing the subject. The text in the picture might be a problem but since it's CC-BY you can crop the image to remove the text which I would advise you do. Regards SoWhy 17:04, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, I've gone ahead and uploaded to Commons and posted a request at the Graphics lab to take the watermark out. Thanks for the help SoWhy! Nolelover It's almost football season! 17:48, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

The Wikifier: March 2011

To assist with preparing the newsletter, please visit the newsroom. Past editions may be viewed here.

Hello Wikifiers!

Sorry this Newsletter is late, It should have gone out a month ago. I've been very busy in real life and didn't have time to get over to the newsletter. In this edition of the Newsletter, we have an editorial written by our new executive coordinator; Guoguo12. Guoguo12 has succeeded Mono due to an indefinite wikibreak. We also have the results of the February and March Mini drives.

Happy Wikifying,

Sumsum2010, the assistant coordinator of WikiProject Wikify

Collaboration

I'm guessing you're still busy with school, but in the event that you're not, I was thinking maybe we could collaborate on a GA or something in the near future. Just a thought. Guoguo12--Talk--  02:22, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I do school year round, but I'd love to. Do you have any ideas? BTW, loved the editorial...fascinating stuff. Nolelover It's almost football season! 12:41, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm not sure what article to work on, but I suppose we could always pick one from Category:Military history articles needing attention only to referencing and citation. These have relatively less work needed. Personally, I find it fascinating that you do school year round. Guoguo12--Talk--  13:40, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
And another one that has recently some across my path, and would probably be fairly quick(er), is Hollywood Walk of Fame, which I found while clearing out Category:Pages with too many photos. Has been recently nominated, but failed pretty quickly, and shouldn't be hard to source. Up to you. As to school, I do a smaller workload all year, i.e., only 2-4 classes at any one time. The lack of summer vacation frees me up for random jaunts throughout the normal school-year. Fun to go to, say, Disney when its empty because everyone else is in school. :P Nolelover It's almost football season! 14:01, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
Hmm... I've never worked on an article that large before, but I suppose we could give it a try. The biggest referencing problem I see is that the date formats are inconsistent and many don't use {{cite news}}. Guoguo12--Talk--  14:17, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
Okay, let's do it. Moving discussion to here. Guoguo12--Talk--  14:35, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Heh, my other GA came from this, so I guess it doesn't look as long to me, and obviously a good bit of it needs to be trimmed back. Anyway, it'll be a good amount of work, but I think it'll be easier then some others might be. Nolelover It's almost football season! 14:41, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

...and while you're on, do you have any objections to the possible moving of the date tagged portion of the {{wikify}} template, per my last statement here? If not, I'll submit an edit request. Nolelover It's almost football season! 14:57, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorry I logged off. Go ahead and submit an edit request. The date shouldn't get its own line. Guoguo12--Talk--  20:41, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
Edit request submitted at Template talk:Wikify, with some difficulty. Guoguo12--Talk--  01:31, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, and I responded there as well. Also, today my computer is acting up, so I doubt I'll get much done. Nolelover It's almost football season! 14:57, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

No problem!

I saw you note, it's fine with me. -- CrossTempleJay  → talk 22:09, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
