Your username[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: it includes the word "Satan", which some users may find offensive. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

Thank you. Stifle (talk) 21:17, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for asking me to discuss my username rather than simply blocking me. I realise that some people may think that I am trying to offend them but that is not my intention. There is another user, unrelated to me, named "America Needs Jesus". Some people may find that username offensive, but I'd like to think that Wikipedia is open enough to allow both of our usernames -- and the ideas that they may suggest -- to exist. I hope this allays your concerns. America Needs Satan (talk) 02:26, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I hate to seem like an all-seeing mother, but I stumbled on this through my Page Links and wanted to comment. The word Satan literally means Adversary. Not to mention it is known as evil and offensive to many people. Jesus on the other hand is known as a peace maker and a great teacher, when not in a religious tense. I don't dislike you, but don't we already have enough Satan-like things in America? My UserName was discussed and blocked from deletion after confrontation. I don't think our names should be thought of as similar, they ARE different. P.S. Why does your name link back to mine? Blessings from Heaven (Oops, did I say that?), lol Jay (talk) 03:32, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As I said above, in reply to Stifle, my username is not intended to offend anyone. You, on the other hand, have deliberately left me a comment ("Blessings from Heaven") that you assumed would offend me, based on your closing remark. My username links back to yours to remind users visiting my user page of the essential duality of the world. Also, to make them think before reporting me simply because the word "Satan" appears in my username (and literally hundereds of others). America Needs Satan (talk) 13:54, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You took it wrong, I say that all of the time. Once I wrote I realized how it sounded with your name, I wanted to make that a joke; no offense. I didn't mean any disrespect, but I really don't think you should be using my name in defense for yours. Also, Blessings by chance? I don't get it, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Happy Editing, :] A.N.J. (talk) 18:08, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad that we can agree to disagree. If my linking to your name is upsetting to you, let me know and I'll change it. America Needs Satan (talk) 02:09, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not at all, it's more publicity for me! No really I'm fine with it, but I don't really get the point? You have my permission to put it on your page. Happy Editing! AmericaNeedsJesus 04:53, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It appears to be a double-standard if User:America Needs Jesus had a discussion about his name, but your name is still allowed. I didn't care about ANJ's name before he agreed to change it because it's his choice to have that name and he would have had to deal with people automatically judging some of his edits. Some Christians may not like my username, but it's not preaching a religious view and besides, I usually avoid most religious articles. But to be fair, if ANJ was asked to change his username, then I don't see why your case you should be any different. Also, your user page contains a link to ANJ, which I find a bit tacky. It appears you made this username specifically as a rebuttal to his name. I, along with Stifle, seem to think it would be better for you to change it. ANJ has agreed to change his name, so it's probably best if you now do the same since your original point of duality seems irrelevant. APK yada yada 09:04, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Reading over my post, it comes across as a bit harsh. It's not intended to be that way. I'm just suggesting that it would probably be in your best interest as an editor to change it. Cheers. APK yada yada 09:10, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I feel strongly that your username is inappropriate. I won't block you, since policy doesn't justify me doing so, but I strongly advise you to seek a change of username. Bear in mind that Wikipedia is not a free speech forum; while we welcome editors with a range of viewpoints, and your contributions to the encyclopedia are valued, we discourage usernames which are likely to offend a large proportion of the community. The aim is a peaceful, collegial working environment. WaltonOne 10:39, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
