Help me![edit]

Please help me with...editing. I'm trying to edit an article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Schoenewolf. I want to edit the References section. When I click the edit button, the reference items turn blue and on the right it says, "Template," and "Generated from Reflist." On the right of that is "Edit". If I press edit I get another box, the the heading "Reflist" and then a note, "This template displays the list of footnotes at the end of an article and provides additional formatting and organizing options. After hitting "Apply changes" and turning back to VE read mode, you will not see the references list. After hitting "Save page" and turning back to normal read mode the reference list will reappear with the changes applied, see T53146." I can't figure out from this how to edit this reference list. I just want to delete an item in the reference list and add another.

Hi Amy, typically, references are placed inline, i.e. after the content they support, and not at the bottom of the page. So for example, from this article you might notice the reference appearing at the end of the following sentence:

Schoenewolf was born to Harold Frederick Schoenewolf and Minna Henrietta Joseph in [[Fredericksburg, Texas]], the third of four sons.<ref name="drschoenewolf.com">{{cite web|title=Gerald Schoenewolf|url=http://www.drschoenewolf.com/about-us.php|website=drschoenewolf.com}}</ref>

These inline citations are compiled by the reflist template and displayed at the bottom of the article. So to answer your question, if you click the main "Edit" link at the top of the screen, you can then do a manual browser search (Ctrl-F or Command-F) to locate the reference you wish to change or add to. You might wish to take a look at Referencing for Beginners so you know the correct formatting. There's also a built-in tool in the edit window that makes citations as easy as filling in some blanks. Help me![edit]

Please help me with...editing the references section of my article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Schoenewolf. An editor said in order to change the references I had to edit the section in the article where the citation is. He said I should click edit at the top of the screen and then click Command F to manually find the section and change it. I have done that, clicked edit and then Command F, and nothing seems to happen. I'd like to change under References, 1. "Gerald Schoenewolf.drschoenewolf.com to 1. "Gerald Schoenewolf.http://geraldschoenewolf.co.nf. Could someone please give me more specific instructions. Thanks.

Hi Amy. The citation text you see in the references section actually appears in the place in the article where the footnote for it appears when you are reading, and so you need to note where in the body of the article that is in order to edit it. the information Cyphoidbomb gave you about command F/Ctrl+F was just to give you an example of a method to find it easily. That is, on most computers, it opens your own browser's find function and after you invoke it you have to enter text in the search field you're searching for. It sounds like you didn't do the next step of doing that search for the text you want to fix. Just skip this.

First, don't use the visual editor. It is buggy as hell. Click the regular "edit" button at the top of the page, then go to the place in the text where the footnote appeared. There you'll find the citation text you want to change. There's a standard explanation template explaining this issue of the reference section not being the place where the citation are when you are in 'edit mode'. I'm going to post it below. When you are reading an article and see a references section near the bottom populated by a series of numbered citations, you might think that if you edit the page, you will see those citations typed in that section and be able to edit them. However, normally what you will see is markup similar to this:

The text of citations is actually in the body of the article, directly next to statements or paragraphs the citations support, using <ref>...</ref> tags, which display as Footnotes (e.g.^[1]^[2]) when you are reading an article. The template code shown above in the references section collates and displays all of the citations within the article in a numbered list in which the numbers correspond to the footnote numbers in the text. By clicking on the ^{^} symbol next to a citation display, you can easily find exactly where in the body of the article the citation text appears in order to edit it.
