WB Map[edit]

Sure, Antorjal. png is fine. My laptop crashed, so I can take a look at the svg only after my new one arrives. Thanks, deeptrivia (talk) 17:49, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WB map fixed[edit]

Hey, the svg map has also been fixed, thanks to Planemad (talk · contribs). So now, the locator map and the district map - both are perfect. Now, before going for an FAC, certain stuffs need care. First, there should be NO red links in the article. I'll work on some red links, please try to cover others. Then, I have doubts on some section. Especially culture needs some work. I doubt if folk culture has been covered perfectly. Let's review the section. I will also ask Ragib (talk · contribs) and ppm to have a look. P.K.Niyogi (talk · contribs) should be a great source also. Again, History needs a re-check if something important has been omitted/ something has got undue coverage. One more thing, the daughter article Culture of West Bengal is virtually non-existent! Have to work on it, at least make it somewhat respectable. Whatever we wish to say about the culture (usually Bengalis brag about their culture!) we should write there. Then, as and if necessary, gist can be shifted to West Bengal. Daughter articles are very important in case of FACs. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:12, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm Back! (For a Little While)[edit]

Sorry, I'm getting busier and busier nowadays. But I do make sure to watch one Satyajit Ray movie every now and then. By now, I've seen all of the following: the Apu Trilogy, Pratidwandi, Seemabaddha, Asani Sanket, Sonar Kella...PLUS Parash Pathar, Jalsaghar, Devi, Teen Kanya, and Kanchenjungha! (After seeing Sonar Kella, I decided to watch the other films in chronological order...:)). Ray's works are all really, really interesting (though of course I can't say anything less about Shyam Benegal!).

Whenever I get the opportunity, I'll try to add stuff to the corresponding pages of each film. I'm also learning Bengali (my father is absolutely certain that I'll speak it fluently by the time we finish watching our entire collection of Satyajit Ray movies). For now, though...aami maathro olpo olpo Baangla bolte paari! --Kuaichik 02:22, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Molecular and Cellular Biology Wikiproject Newsletter[edit]

The project main page has gotten a facelift!
When people visit the project, the very first thing that they see tends to be the project's main page, and with this in mind, the main page has been completely overhauled. To enhance readability the various "goals" sections have been merged, and a detailed "how you can help" section has been added. To increase accessibility for more established members, the links to any resources that were in the main body text have been moved onto the navigation bar on the right. Finally, the whole page has been nicely laid out and given a nice attractive look.
New project feature: peer review
I'm proud to announce the addition of out newest feature: peer review! The MCB peer review feature aims serve as a stepping stone to improve articles to featured article status by allowing editors to request the opinions of other members about articles that they might not otherwise see or contribute to.
Project progress
The article worklist
We’ve had quite a bit of progress on the worklist article in the past month. Not only has the list itself nearly doubled in size from 143 to 365 entries, but an amazing three articles have been advanced to FA status, thanks in great part to the efforts of our very own TimVickers! Remember, the state of the worklist is the closest thing we have to quantifying the progress of the project, so if you get the chance, please take a look at the list, pick a favorite article, and improve it!
Collaboration of the Month
Last month's Collaboration of the Month, cell nucleus, was a terrific success! In one month, the article went from a dismal stub to an A-class article. Many thanks to all of the collaborators who contributed, especially ShaiM, who took on the greatest part of the burden. This month's Collaboration of the Month, adenosine triphosphate, isn't getting nearly the attention of its predecessor, so if you can, please lend a hand!
Finally...
The project has a new coordinator, ClockworkSoul! The role - my role - of coordinator will be to harmonize the project's common efforts, in part by organizing the various tasks required to make the project run as smoothly and completely as possible. Many thanks to those who supported me and those participated in the selection process.

WB FAC[edit]

Urgent Help Needed[edit]

See the comment "I see no pages in the printed sources which are citated" in WB FAC. Could you please quote the page numbers of "Mukherji, S.J. (1984). College Botany Vol. III: (chapter on Phytogeography). Calcutta: New Central Book Agency" that you used to write the Flora and Fauna section. As you have used a chapter, you can give the page range. See the way page range has been given in citing specific chapters of West Bengal Human Development Report 2004.

However, if you have used several chapters and several pages, it will be better to use Harvard reference style. See the way citation number 11 (...while hundreds of thousands of Hindus fled into the city...) has been used in History section of Kolkata. In Harvard style, the book is listed once in the "Reference" section. And multiple page citations can be done in multiple instances. See Wikipedia:Harvard referencing and Wikipedia:Harvard citation template examples if you need. Thanks a lot.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:23, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Someone has prodded the Sabita Chowdhury article (which is now about the singer). I contested the deletion, but since all the info from the previous article has been removed, very little remains. Wonderful[edit]

Wow! Great job with all those district maps. Had to do a lot of stuffs for West Bengal today. Loads of citations! Huh. Almost got mad! LoL. Let's see what will be the response in FAC. The problem is the size of the article has increased much, one of the factors being all those citations. So far the FAC is ok-ish.People did not use to be so particular even in recent past. Good that people are finding out so many faults...the article is becoming better and better. FAC of Kolkata was easier and of Darjeeling was a bit tough! Lets see how WB goes. Interesting topics and...[edit]

Please see the comments by Pradiptaray (talk · contribs) in West Bengal FAC. The second point, mentioning rural/traditional foods/beverage is very important. We missed it altogether in the article. In the article Bengali cuisine there are discussions on pithe and some other foods, but there is no article/discussion on paantabhat or morobba or mahua. If you have some time, could you please try to build some stubs on them?

I shall also try. But there are more pressing problems, as mentioned by Tony, that is Tony1 (talk · contribs). I had requested SandyGeorgia (talk · contribs) to have a look through the article. He looked and has incorporated some inline comments. Have to address those. Shmitra (talk · contribs) is also helping out. --Dwaipayan (talk) 07:26, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As a matter of fact, I was waiting with trepidation what Tony would say. He is a magnificent copyeditor. Anyway, per his suggestion, I have requested some editors to have a go at the article for copyediting purpose. Sandy, Sundar and ppm has started helping. But it's tough to find out a "word-nerd". Unspecified source for Image:Bijon bhattacharya.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Bijon bhattacharya.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. feydey 19:46, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Achipur temple.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Achipur temple.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --– Quadell (talk) (random) 19:14, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume I, Issue 3 - December 2006[edit]

Project News
  • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
  • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
  • Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

Note from Editor's Desk
  • Welcome to the December 2006 edition of our newsletter. Time flies past like matter into the black hole. It is interesting to notice that we are already into the last month for the year of 2006. 2006 saw discussions and development beyond realisation. In the world of Wikipedia where quality counts than quantity, we have come a long way. We've made better than 'nothing', to say the least, and even that is an achievement. I take this opportunity to thank everyone including those who have dotted the i's and crossed the t's.
  • As before, we'd like to stress, this is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know. Sponsored content for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll be very happy to include them here.
  • Before we sign off, Advance New Year Wishes, everyone.

  • How to?: The "how to" part of assessment is very simple. Just head on to the talk page of any India related page and you'll find the {{WP India}} template. Simply classify the article based on the content and the criteria mentioned here. You can find the detailed instructions here. If you think it may qualify for GA/FA status, first consider submitting the article for peer review.

Back Again[edit]

Hey Antorjal, ki khobor? By now I have seen nearly all of Satyajit Ray's Bengali feature films except Jana Aranya, Joi Baba Felunath, Shakha Proshakha, and Agantuk.

(I also haven't seen Ghare Baire or Ganashatru, but I never really intend to see the latter of these two since it's just a translation of Ibsen...!)

I'll see what I can do in the way of Satyajit Ray movie articles. I even got to watch Chiriyakhana! But I didn't quite grasp the plot...:-P --Kuaichik 03:57, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Hi,

I would like to thank you for the contributions you made (especially on Midnapore). You have enhanced it a lot! Yet one small request, as I had mentioned earlier, Ritwik Ghatak also lived in Midnapore in his youth. He was the unkle (/cousin?) of Mahashweta Devi, as I remember reading in some autobiographical short story by Mahashweta (Bhabaa-Bhobir galpo - or something like that - after their nick-names). Mahashweta's father was a District Magistrate, I think.

If you have time, please look up the information.

Hope I am not too demanding!

Thanks and regards, Srays

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 1 - January 2007[edit]

Project News
  • Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of {{WP India}} to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
  • Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, {{Hindu Links}} now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.

Your maps[edit]

I was expecting a lot of Wikipedia-activity from you but you seem to have pulled back. We are missing your interesting contribution. I have been working on the cities and towns for some time. I started with transfers of material from Ganeshbot and then got involved. Recently, I have put in a district template for all towns in West Bengal. Maybe, I have missed few here and there. I have used your maps for each district template. Please have a look. I had some problem in putting the templates for the Medinipur towns, because it is Purba and Paschim now, but many towns still mention only Midnapore. Please have a look and correct it, in case I made a mistake. With regards. -- P.K.Niyogi 01:50, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I made some edits to the Bartaman page which I have a suspicion maybe reverted soon. The words I delelted were extremely derogatory and bordered on villification of Bartaman readers, which you will admit is an NPOV issue. I noticed on the talk page that you posted the last discussion regarding the article's content and suggested it might be a spam article. I hope you will have a look at the changes I made if you (or someone else)reverted it and agree with me. Also, I hope you will support the changes I made, since I have a feeling you edit this article (and others ,linked to Bengal). Thanks.130.209.6.40 23:42, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 2 - March 2007[edit]

Project News
  • Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([2]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [3]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.
  • Wikipedia Weekly 15: Wikipedia Weekly, a informal Wikipedians' program that purports to give "A weekly audio roundup of Wikipedia happenings with news, interviews and roundtable discussions" recently interviewed two prominent editors Rama's Arrow and Ragib(listen). The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.

Unspecified source for Image:Maine pyar kiya.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Maine pyar kiya.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:12, 11 April 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. AKeen 15:12, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Antorjal, an automated process has found an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, such as fair use. The image (Image:Ritwik ghatak.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Antorjal/Sandbox. This image or media will be removed per statement number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media will be replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. The image that was replaced will not be automatically deleted, but it could be deleted at a later date. Articles using the same image should not be affected by my edits. I ask you to please not readd the image to your userpage and could consider finding a replacement image licensed under either the Creative Commons or GFDL license or released to the public domain. Thanks for your attention and cooperation. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 07:24, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Permission to use tRNA structure in a not-for-profit document?[edit]

Hi,

The structure of the tRNA that you've released is the best I've seen anywhere and better than any one I could hope to come up with.

I was wondering if I could get permission to reproduce a copy of the tRNAPhe structure that you've released to the public domain in the introductory chapter of my dissertation? Of course I would cite you as being the source with something like " structure reproduced with the kind permission of N.R. Voss" and I would quote the reference if there was one.

Have a great day!

--Antorjal 14:34, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Go for it! I also used a wiki-image in my dissertation as well. A real citation would be great, but I haven't used the image in any of my publications, so the citation you proposed above is good. Someone else has also used that tRNA image for a published article, I never expected it to get any attention.
