WikiCup 2019 Reminder

Hi. I'm DannyS712 (talk), and I just wanted to remind you that you are a current participant in round 2 of this year's WikiCup! There are only a few days until the second round ends – if you haven't made you first submission for this round yet, there is still time to start; if you have already started, keep up the good work. WikiCup 2019 May newsletter

The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
  • Wales Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
  • Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
  • Kingdom of Prussia Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.

Other notable performances were put in by Chicago Barkeep49 with six GAs, United States Ceranthor, England Lee Vilenski, and Saskatchewan Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and Denmark MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.

So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Help with iron Man's Armor deletion

Hey I need your help. It has been suggested that Iron Man's Armor to be deleted and I need your help to prevent that from happening. I'm planning to use Iron Man Armor on Marvel Database, a Marvel Comics wiki to get the citation needed to save the article. I really need your help to prevent this from dying, please I really need you.Penguin7812 (talk) 19:38, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

@Penguin7812: It's only tagged with a PROD, which is really easy to contest (basically, just remove it from the page. More detail is here). That will lead the nominator to either leave it alone or go to a full deletion request. In the short term, you'll want to find reliable sources beyond the Marvel Database that could be used to improve the article. You won't have to actually improve it immediately to prevent deletion.
Off the top of my head, I can't think of any print sources that could be used, but I'll see if I can dig something up. I'm a bit busy at work at the moment, so it might be some time before I can assist with real effort. Good luck. Argento Surfer (talk) 19:55, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
@Penguin7812: Alternatively, you could reformat the page as List of iron man armors (currently a redirect to Iron Man's armor). If you made it into a table with columns for the armor name, the debut issue, and it's purpose or special ability, that would probably alleviate most of the nominator's concerns. Argento Surfer (talk) 12:53, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Thank you very much, but how do I do that? Penguin7812 (talk) 17:48, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
I whipped up some code for it here. If you edit that section, you can see notes I added to help explain it. I recommend playing with it in your sandbox before putting in the article space. Your sand box is here. Give it a shot and let me know if you have any trouble. Argento Surfer (talk) 18:00, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Sleepless (comics)

On 14 May 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sleepless (comics), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the premise for the comic book Sleepless came to writer Sarah Vaughn when she was trying to sleep? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sleepless (comics). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Sleepless (comics)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello Argento Surfer,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

On 21 May 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Trials of Shazam!, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Excellent work on Shazam

Your efforts on The Trials of Shazam are the reason it made it on the Did you know page. You deserve praise for it if I am honest if the article had been solely edited by myself it wouldn't be as great an article as it is. Well done in making a basic article an excellent article. GA nom thoughts?

Hi! I was curious if you could take a look at the article City Crimes and let me know if you think it's ready for a GA nomination. Offhand I don't really think that it's ready. I don't know if the student will be back on to really edit either - I know that he has his email enabled so there's a way to let him know, FWIW. If you don't think it's ready I'll remove the nomination and let the student know. I just didn't want to remove it if the article was reasonably ready for review. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:27, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

@Shalor (Wiki Ed): It looks like a borderline case to me. It's based off of four sources, and they're all offline. They might well be amazing sources, but for a new student editor I'd prefer something I could verify. The content itself looks pretty ok, and could probably be tweaked to meet GA even if the nominator doesn't respond to comments. Based on the editing history it's unlikely another editor will take up the burden. If you want to let it sit for now, I'll pick it up after I finish the review I'm currently working on. If I hit roadblocks I can't overcome I'll make the comments as constructive as I can when I don't pass it.
I've added it to my watchlist. If another editor picks it up for review before I do, I'll respond to their concerns as best I'm able. Argento Surfer (talk) 13:40, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
  • Thanks! Depending on what the comments are I will try to work on what you bring up as well - I don't mind doing some of the work myself, as long as it's stuff that I'm able to do. (IE, it all boils down to what I can get sourcing for since my access to stuff is more limited.) Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:57, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

Hello Argento Surfer,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

WikiCup 2019 July newsletter

The third round of the 2019 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round needed to score at least 68 points, which is substantially lower than last year's 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Norfolk Island Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with 500 points derived mainly from a featured article and two GAs on natural history topics
  • South Carolina Adam Cuerden, with 480 points, a tally built on 16 featured pictures, the result of meticulous restoration work
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist in the last two years, with 306 points from a variety of submissions, mostly related to sport or the State of Washington
  • United States Usernameunique, with 305 points derived from a featured article and two GAs on archaeology and related topics

Contestants managed 4 (5) featured articles, 4 featured lists, 18 featured pictures, 29 good articles, 50 DYK entries, 9 ITN entries, and 39 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and it is imperative to claim them in the correct round; one FA claim had to be rejected because it was incorrectly submitted (claimed in Round 3 when it qualified for Round 2), so be warned! When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Thor and Venom family trees templates

Hello there, how are you? I wanted to ask you a question if you don't mind. Since you are aware about this, I want to talk about deleting Template:Thor family tree and Template: Venom family tree, since they're kinda unneeded and there are already articles discussing the same subject. So I'm asking where could I discuss the deletion about these Templates and have editors join the discussion? Thank you for reading this. Penguin7812(Talk Page) 13:45, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

@Penguin7812: - You're looking for Wikipedia:Templates for discussion. Nominating a template for deletion is a three step process, and this page has some detailed instructions for each step along the way. When you craft your deletion rationale, I recommend linking to the discussion from the comic project page and the Wikipedia:Not everything needs a navbox page.
If you run into any technical trouble, I suggest reaching out to User: Plastikspork, who seems to be quite active in that area. I expect to be mostly unavailable the next few days (maybe a few weeks), so I won't be able to respond to any requests very promptly. Argento Surfer (talk) 19:33, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

Hello

Thank you for the clarification. In fact, EVERY legitimate source cites Action Comics 23 as the first appearance of Luthor. Including Overstreet, CGC, CBCS, all captains of the industry, and of course DC comics itself. Nowhere and at no time do any of these mention Superman 4. The other individual attempting to edit was repeatedly attempting to add content without ANY citation. He cited something called mikesamazingworld, but even clicking through to that does not say anything near what the other individual was attempting to add to Wikipedia. In a note to me he told me to click the little magnifying glass on Mikesamazingworld which again, still did not say what he was attempting to add to Wikipedia. In fact, there is a disclaimer right there in the pop up that specifically says "publication dates are NOT release dates", in addition to release dates being "approximate". So again, the other individual is citing nothing valid, substantive, or definitive as a citation. There is not even a dispute here or confusion. If you are attempting to re-write 80 years of DC canon, and go against EVERY SINGLE AUTHORITATIVE SOURCE, you need to have something better than "Mike" and disclaimers from Mike that specifically state the OPPOSITE of what the other individual was attempting to add in.

Thanks again for taking the time to reach out to me.

Regards,

-jaydubp — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaydubp (talkcontribs) 18:57, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

Yes that magnifying glass did have a first appearance of both Action Comics #23 and Superman #4 in sales date. Maybe Mike isn’t reliable but it cites Library of Congress either way. Quit claiming I am lying please. Also Grand Comics Database says the same thing the note too. Also my edits say that both are an original appearance in the same years date. I don’t have any agenda.Jhenderson 777 19:04, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

It also cited the Library of Congress but the most proper date is the newsstand date I feel. @Argento Surfer:. Can you confirm that those appearances are their newsstand dates. Jhenderson 777 19:12, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

"Mikesamazingworld.com", when you click on that magnifying glass, specifically states that DC did not report on sale dates to the Library of Congress prior to 1958, and that publication dates are NOT on sale dates, so nothing there supports your attempted edits either. "Mike" is using only "approximate" dates (translation: "guesswork"), which is why it is not a legitimate source for anything. Fact of the matter is, NO ONE KNOWS this info, which is why you have not and will not be able to reference a citation that says what you want it to say. Given that Overstreet, CGC, CBCS, and DC Comics itself are all united in Action Comics 23, and only Action Comics 23 as the first appearance, and you are attempting to edit Wikipedia to say things that are in direct opposition to all these comic book authorities and the company that created the character, you need something more than one guy's website with disclaimers all over it (which itself does not even say what you were trying to edit in) to try to rewrite 80 years of comic book canon. Regards,

-jaydubp — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaydubp (talkcontribs) 00:03, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

Personally I want you be right. Lol I don’t know what you are talking about when it comes to me having an agenda. 😂Jhenderson 777 00:15, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

Jaydubp (talk) 00:49, 25 July 2019 (UTC)Based on the magnitude of the edit that was attempting to be made with such little and unsupported citation, I may have jumped to an incorrect conclusion about your motives. So I apologize for the "agenda" comment. Regards- jaydubp

WikiCup 2019 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 454 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with over 400 points being eliminated, and all but two of the finalists having achieved an FA during the round. Casliber, our 2016 winner, was the highest point-scorer, followed by Enwebb and Lee Vilenski, who are both new to the competition. In fourth place was SounderBruce, a finalist last year. But all those points are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 11 featured articles. In addition, Adam Cuerden scored with 18 FPs, Lee Vilenski led the GA score with 8 GAs while Kosack performed 15 GA reviews. There were around 40 DYKs, 40 GARs and 31 GAs overall during round 4. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Your GA nomination of A god Somewhere

The article A god Somewhere you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:A god Somewhere for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. To be clear, I have not failed the nomination. Apparently the bot is upset that the page was moved. Haukur (talk) 12:52, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello Argento Surfer,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to support me at my RfA. I try hard to be constantly learning and improving as an editor and I appreciated that you share an anecdote about those qualities. Now it's just a matter of learning about a whole range of new things. I hope our wiki paths cross again soon. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 00:41, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

Awards will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved much this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

We have opened a scoring discussion on whether the rules and scoring need adjustment. Please have your say. Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2020 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Billy Budd

You might want to check on whether the nominating editor for Billy Budd is back from an extended Wikibreak for your review. He was doing the review for Herman Melville which is still incomplete, but he has been away for an extended Wikibreak. CodexJustin (talk) 20:30, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

Try to let me know if he does not show up at Billy Budd in a reasonable amount of time. If you might like to switch over and do the assessment for Herman Melville which he already started, then I could offer to do one or two of your graphic novel nominations for you. CodexJustin (talk) 15:16, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
@CodexJustin: I'd be happy to take a look. I just started another one this morning that I'd like to finish first, but it should be wrapped up in a day or two based on my previous experience with that nominator.
Do you plan to take over the Billy Bud nomination? Argento Surfer (talk) 15:30, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
He seems like a no-show on Billy Budd. Any possibility for closing Billy Budd as a no-show, and your switching over to the Melville biography in order to finish up there. Also, I am seconding your opinions and comments on Billy Budd not being ready for promotion in its current form. Is that possible for you to switch to the Melville biography? CodexJustin (talk) 14:55, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I'll review the Melville article. I'm a bit behind at work, so it may be a day or two before I can take a good look at it. Argento Surfer (talk) 16:01, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'll be away for much of the week-end after Saturday morning. There is no rush. Any chance that you might get to this sometime over the week-end or the coming week? CodexJustin (talk) 14:35, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
@CodexJustin: Sorry for the delay. Work has unexpectedly picked up, and I haven't had time to give this the attention it needs. I still intend to do it, but I may not be able to start until Friday or next week. Argento Surfer (talk) 12:55, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Ready here to move forward to the next section of the Melville article when you are. It might be nice to make some further progress by mid-month if possible. CodexJustin (talk) 15:45, 10 June 2019 (UTC)
@CodexJustin: Sorry, this has taken me much longer than I thought. If nothing else, I have a vacation coming up the third week of July, and I will commit as much time as needed to complete the review by the end of it. Argento Surfer (talk) 12:43, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
Those were nice edits from you over the week-end on Melville; are things ready to restart and continue? CodexJustin (talk) 14:48, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
I'm hoping so. Argento Surfer (talk) 15:57, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
Congrats on the GA for your graphic novel nomination. I'm just checking in at mid-month to see if we are trying to get the Melville article possibly done by the end of summer. Its fine if you want to go into Autumn with an extra careful review if that's your preference and let me know if I can assist. CodexJustin (talk) 16:47, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for your patience - I'm finally starting to climb out from under my mountain of work, and I hope to have real time to dedicate to this review soon. I feel especially bad since I'm your second flakey reviewer. :( Argento Surfer (talk) 17:48, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
Checking in for November to see how your edit time is looking and in case I can help out. This article is actually now rolling over from last year as a nomination from 2018. Possibly you might consider dividing up the remaining sections with User:Wagapodes to try to make some progress before the end of this year. In any case, we can take this at whatever approach you are most comfortable with. CodexJustin (talk) 15:57, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello Argento Surfer,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 818 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

Herman Melville

Hi Argento Surfer, CodexJustin is getting concerned about the length of time that the Herman Melville GA review has stayed open. Do you think you're close to finishing that review? If you're busy with other things, that's fine, just let me know, and I'd be happy to finish the review for you. Thanks! Wug·a·po·des 20:19, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

@Wugapodes: If you could take over, that would be great. It seems like every time I think I'll be able to devote time to it, work gets busy again.
@CodexJustin: I am genuinely sorry for the slow process - especially since this isn't the first time a reviewer stalled on you. I hope I'll have the opportunity to make it up to you in the future. Argento Surfer (talk) 20:40, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
No problem! I totally understand trying to devote time to something and work getting in the way. Slow progress is still progress, so don't worry about the deadline. I hope work lightens up soon! Wug·a·po·des 20:49, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
50/50 shot of that. I'll either take on more work in 2020, or I'll be out of work. Argento Surfer (talk) 21:31, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
(fixing ping) Argento Surfer (talk) 21:31, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

So this is not significant?

As a wise man says, talk is cheap. So I decided to take action. But it’s probably not enough to change your mind because the heart of men are stubborn. I still respect you as an editor though and just respectfully agree to disagree to my good colleague. Jhenderson 777 21:04, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

That is a valiant effort, but alas you're correct that my mind is unchanged. And of course, I still have respect for you, too.
I was honest when I said that I was open to suggestions for my criteria. I put quite a bit of thought into how I could measure something as intangible as in-universe notability. So far, most of the exceptions I've made to it have been negative (that is, they exceeded criteria but I felt they cheated somehow to get there). Aside from firsthand knowledge, how are you judging notability? Argento Surfer (talk) 21:47, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
It’s hard to consider notability with a comic book character. It’s a gradual process. Originally Peggy Carter and Okoye and even Erik Killmonger considered minor in the comics and not notable. But thanks to continuity (which is a common term for comic books) in comics or outside of comics characters can evolve into a notable major character through time. Hence my concern that it’s too soon for an AFD because she maybe is a potential candidate for next appearance Doctor Strange sequel. Even then I think she is notable even without appearing in an upcoming film. Jhenderson 777 23:32, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
Just a heads up that User: Nightscream did some updates on it too. Some I think better. Some needs some getting used to. But overall I just felt like updating since you voted. Jhenderson 777 11:24, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
