Wikimania 2010 could be coming to Stockholm![edit]

I'm leaving you a note as you may be interested in this opportunity.

People from all six Nordic Wiki-communities (sv, no, nn, fi, da and is) are coordinating a bid for Wikimania 2010 in Stockholm. I'm sending you a message to let you know that this is occurring, and over the next few months we're looking for community support to make sure this happens! See the bid page on meta and if you like such an idea, please sign the "supporters" list at the bottom. Tack (or takk), and have a wonderful day! Mike H. Fierce! 08:41, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:NTVLogo.gif)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:NTVLogo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:32, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Volvox (band)[edit]

A tag has been placed on Volvox (band) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Soundvisions1 (talk) 11:19, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:AnimaPromotion.jpg[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:AnimaPromotion.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Garion96 (talk) 19:16, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello AtilimGunesBaydin! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 2 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 942 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Hi, I sincerely hope your Wikibreak ends soon. Now there is a problem with the emblem of METU. The userbox METU (User METU) lacks the emblem because of the fair use policy of Wikipedia. (It has been removed on the 4th of Aug., 2006. Since then there is no emblem in the box.) Since you are the creator of the emblem (2005) why don't you add the emblem to the box ? Sincerely... Reviewer[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Tiptoety talk 06:49, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I will familiarize myself with the process and be happy if I can be of help as a reviewer. Atilim Gunes Baydin (talk) 16:54, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Karasu[edit]

Hello, I wonder if you can help with a question about the Turkish word karasu. There are many rivers called Karasu. Presumably 'kara' here means 'territory' or 'land' rather than 'black' and 'su' means 'river'/'stream'. I have also seen the claim that 'karasu' means 'water coming from the earth' = 'spring water'. It appears that the word is used both as the name of some rivers (Karasu Nehri) but also a generic word for river (Mesta Karasu -- can you say Mesta Karasu Nehri?). It's all very confusing.... Can you help? Thanks. --Macrakis (talk) 13:36, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Γειά σας! Being a native Turkish speaker, the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear karasu is black water, or in this context, black river. If I try to summarize:
  • There is the adjective kara, meaning black or very dark, and there exist many related words such as karanlık (darkness) and kararmak (to darken). There is also the homonym kara, meaning land (especially in the context of contrasting land with sea or ocean).
  • The primary meaning of su is water, but only in compound words used as proper names of flowing bodies of water it can also mean river, stream, creek etc., as in Karasu (black stream), Aksu (white stream), İncesu (narrow stream) etc. The meaning that su usually confers in these names is closer to a creek (a tributary), instead of a large river (for which one uses nehir, akarsu etc.; akarsu, by the way means flowing water or running water). Also, this meaning of su is only in compound proper names of streams and one hardly ever uses su as a generic word to refer to any stream as a whole.
  • I'm inclined to find the spring water or water coming from the earth explanation not very plausible. I mean, at least generally. There may be some very specific cases where this can be the true explanation of the proper name of a particular river in a geographic area, but I'm almost absolutely certain that in general kara here refers to the color of the flowing water. My personal guess is that this relates to sediment transport and the mud content of the stream in question, as you can see in a photo on the Meeting of Waters article. Good examples for this are the Yellow River in China or the many Rio Negros in South America.
  • I can definitely say that there isn't a word karasu used as a generic word for river. At least not in standard Turkish (Istanbul dialect).
  • The fact that all the examples you mention (Struma Karasu, Mesta Karasu, İnce Karasu) are found in the Balkans made me think that there might be a different usage in the Balkan Turkish dialect, but I don't really believe this is the case. It could be that these are the names given to different smaller tributaries of one larger river called Karasu, I didn't have time to check this.
  • Lastly, to complicate things even further for you, one last meaning of karasu (totally unrelated to you question!) is the belt of coastal water surrounding a country and under the sovereignty of it, i.e. territorial water, as in Ege karasuları (Aegean territorial waters).
So, this was perhaps a bit too much information for your short question, I'm sorry about that. I hope these would be helpful. Atilim Gunes Baydin (talk) 17:30, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Teşekkür ederim! Very interesting. The various Balkan 'Karasu' are all distinct and all flow into the Aegean, but it looks like the various Karasu in Anatolia and eastward are all tributaries.... I see that there are also cases of siyahsu and beyazsu (more), but not very common. Thanks again. --Macrakis (talk) 20:44, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Pilli Bebek requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Proposed deletion of Barışarock[edit]

The article Barışarock has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indicia of notability

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Thank you for uploading File:20060916 Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
