Metallica

Well, they actually do have a lot of good songs with messages; the whole Master of Puppets (album) is about themes of control (Battery is violence and anger controlling you, Master of Puppets itself is about drugs controlling you, and so on) is very well played out, and songs such as Blackened and Fight Fire with Fire are well written, subtly anti-war songs. I still like Metallica, only St.Anger was (to be frank) a very large dissappointment, and their approach into alternative rock does turn me off a bit. But nice talking to you, and feel free to come over to my talk page if you ever see any need to do so. Cheers! :D _-M o P-_ 02:03, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of Backmasked Messages

I have records with those songs by CMX (CD-single called "Jatkuu niinkuin sade" (Goes on like rain) and triple-CD-collection "Cloaca Maxima II") and Pääkköset (LP called "Pääkköset"). I also had that song by Juice Leskinen in C-cassette. I have listened them (forward and backwards) and they really sound like those messages have been intentionally added. Pääkköset said in some interview that they had added "satanic message" to their song intentionally. --juhtolv 06:05, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Weird Stairways to Heaven, punctuation

Hi. I watched (IIRC) every episode of The Money or the Gun and I have the CD. The choral version is even better than the Grand Opera version. I didn't hear all of the Rolf Harris version until I bought the CD, because I was literally rolling around the floor with laughter when it was aired ...

Thanks for pointing out that comma-outside-quote-marks mistake. Like many computer programmers, I unilaterally adopted so-called "logical punctuation" (=British style) when I encountered it; I need to remember that it's not always appropriate. (I prefer U.S. spelling and British punctuation, the reverse of most Aussies.)

Stairway / Copyvio

Hi. Song lyrics have inherent copyright. Yes, there are tons of lyric sites on the web, and you don't see much prosecution for it, but that doesn't change the underlying fact. As to how much is fair use, I don't know. I've included illustrative lines from songs elsewhere myself. One answer [1] seems to be "a line or two", but I don't know how definitive this is. In any event, part of an argument for fair use has to do with the purpose, I think: the excerpt must be just sufficient to illustrate a particular point being made. Since the article already links to sites that go over the alleged lyrics in detail (and at that point we aren't really talking about the subject of the article which is the song but instead somebody else's "research" on it), I can't see where including an entire stanza is defensible; additionally the structure of the dual-quotes section seemed to give some authority to the claims which I don't think is appropriate. Jgm 17:10, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I dunno, the clip just seemed to hang there; it seemed odd to have the backwards sample as the only sample in the article about a famous song (it would be interesting, by the way, to have clips from each section of the song in the description section, though I'm not sure that would be completely acceptable). There is also at least one reference to a page that includes samples. I don't disagree with your statement about getting the facts on the table, I'd just hate to see an extended analysis of this controversy take over the article as it seems to tend to (I suppose if that happens again we might consider splitting off a sub-article). If you think the clip belongs there and want to re-add it, I won't object. Jgm 12:58, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Response to backmasking comment

I noticed you said that alot of backmasking claims are fake. I happen to have alot of free time on my hands and can confirm all of the claims made by wikipedia users. feel free to E mail me anytime so i can give you links to wavs.Ted 10:46, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Ted

I was completeley unaware that the song "Mother" by Pink Floyd had subliminal messages in it, yet it Produced a very clear "I Love Satan". But you are right when you say that you can hear anything you want to.Ted 05:47, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sound of the day

Great to see your involvement here. I hope you don't mind I changed to the "Advertising Record", as the other is apparently a video and didn't play for me at all except as a loud squeak.--Pharos 23:40, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Guitar portal

Hi Madder! Thanks for your changes on the Guitar portal. I also done a template “Articles related to Guitar” that appears in the portal and at the end of most of the articles related to guitar. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Guitar

The thing is that when I clic on “hide” there is a problem in the end of the Portal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Guitar Could you do something to solve it?

Thanks!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Tommaso456

Hi Audacity!

Thanks for your answer and sorry to have made a confusion my Madder… As you suggested me I will postpone GSOTD. There is still the problem with the "hide" of the template with Microsoft explorer but not with Firefox. Hablo espanol pero soy frances.

All the best,

WikiProject Guitarists

Hello! I would like to invite you to check out a brand new WikiProject, WikiProject Guitarists. It is aimed at creating and improving articles related to guitarists. Comments are welcome, and I hope you will decide to join. --Aguerriero (talk) 15:51, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

C&D.

Please stop moving the DOB pages unless you fix your template first. Folajimi 10:41, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Apologies are unnecessary; if you are unable to fix your template, refrain from making any other page moves. --Folajimi 03:02, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • According to the example on my talk page, the issue is unresolved. --Folajimi 03:06, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • The information in question is annoyingly redundant; it adds nothing of substance to the content being presented. Either give it the axe, or refrain from using it. --Folajimi 03:19, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Noticeboard

Thanks Audacity. I'd like to make the noticeboard into something useful for the community. Right now here's requests that have been there two years that have not been dealt with! I see you've been doing a lot of work on the music portal. Nice job - it's looking better and better. MarkBuckles 07:06, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Backmasking

Did you ever get a definite answer on the 30 second clips of backmasking we were talking about ?

Bearingbreaker92 00:30, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I saw that site before. Only problem is that its mindnumbingly slow.

Bearingbreaker92 03:17, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry. I don't see the controversial point in this bit: "An example in less hardcore culture was the controversy over the theme tune of the popular childrens' television anime Pokémon. It is alleged that the words "Gotta catch 'em all", when played backwards, say "I love Satan" or "Oh, Satan"[1]." It is duly credited. From my point of view, you actually took it off withour proper explanation. Trencacloscas 02:13, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Songs

Hey Dan, I'd like to know what you think about this. I was looking at the rammstein page, and thought that on Sehnsucht not every single song needs its own page. Most of the songs on that page are described in detail on the main album page, plus the songs arent singles or controversial, so is there a need for all of these little album stubs? Tell me what you think about this.

Bearingbreaker92 19:01, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a wikipedia special page that tells about what should be done about these? As an official resource? Also what should be done about the info in the main page, kept? or transfered to the other pages and delted off the original?

The only ones in my opinion of keeping are the singles and Buch Dich, as its a controversial song.

Hi Audacity, I don't know if you noticed but the Music Portal failed in its nomination as a featured portal candidate. I think there's quite a few things we can improve with the portal, but I'm not sure how to go about doing them, and I was wondering if you might have any ideas? I listed a few on the talk page, so any feedback and ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :-) Madder 14:03, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tools for navigating birthday pages.

Is it possible to include calendar boxes to ease navigation of birthday pages? See today's date page (i.e.01:38, Tuesday, May 14, 2024 (UTC)) for an example of what this looks like. Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 10:05, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I will handle adding the calendars manually. --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 11:26, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • The new template works as desired. Thanks. --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 02:57, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • From here on in, the calendar tags will be addressed as you suggested. Also, on the subject of aesthetics, is it possible to limit the list of entries displayed on the portal to ten entries or less? Having the entire list seems a wee bit much... --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 23:25, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Recently discovered feature

Today, I happened to be editing Portal:Music/DateOfBirth/June 29 and I noticed the rather interesting format used for the entry on Evelyn King. Could you please explain what that is about? Also, are there other undocumented features to the template used for the entries? --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 16:09, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Rather interesting option, indeed. Usually, I would have used the pipe key, as in [[Evelyn King|Champagne King]] to address such issues. However, this approach has a drawback, as is evidenced by Portal:Music/DateOfBirth/January 5; the listings with red links occur because the default blue links point to namesakes. How would the documented option address such situations? --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 15:28, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. At the moment, Portal:Music/DateOfBirth/January 5 and Portal:Music/DateOfBirth/January 05 point to different targets; how much of an effort would it be to get them to point to the same target?
    • Your responses to all my questions were sufficient. Regarding the redlink(s), I guess redirects would be in order... --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 16:52, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: ...Trail of Dead backmasked message

Nope, sorry about that one. It is clearly audible, but I can't seem to find any reference to it on the web. Probably should've paid a bit more attention to the talk page, apologies again. It's definitely a real one though, seems strange there's no reference to it elsewhere. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Demonofthefall (talkcontribs) 04:53, 7 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Hi Audacity, just noticed there's a little problem with Portal:Music/Music_news . It's meant to show news from the previous month as well as the current month, but in a new year, it doesn't work because it's set on {{Month-1}} {{CURRENTYEAR}} - so it's looking for news in December 2007, which hasn't happened yet. I don't know if there would be a way of maybe getting it to do {{YEAR-1}} (if that works?) only when the month is equal to January? I've temporarily replaced the template includes with the actual months so it works for the moment, but it'll stop working next month. All the best, and happy new year :-) Madder 22:34, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey audacity, are you sure because it still has the line:
{{#ifexist:Portal:Music/Music news/December 2006|{{Portal:Music/Music news/December 2006}}|}}

and if that's removed it stops working. And recent deaths seems to have something similar? Or maybe I'm just getting confused? Madder 22:58, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

re: Red link?

Hi Audacity, at the time it was coming up as a red link for me, but now it seems to be OK. Maybe it was a temporary problem in Wikipedia with links beginning with v: ? Madder 17:12, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mysteriously missing link.

The list of Portal:Music/DateOfBirth/August 5 has an entry on Damita Jo DuBlanc, which supposedly links to the recently created article, However, the "What links here" page for the artist fails to list the birthday page as one of the linked-to articles.

This behaviour, as far as I can tell, is unusual; any idea as to what might be going on there? --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 19:59, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. When you said that you removed the list of dead people from the Portal:Music page, are you saying that there was a list of obituaries at some point? Or are you referring to something else?

Backmasking

Sure, I'd help you out with the backmasking.

Just give me a list of songs you'd like me to do, and I'll see what I can get done. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bearingbreaker92 (talkcontribs)

I'll take a look at it tomorrow, (wensday). Also I dont have alot of these songs on here, and "limewiring" them would not be the best thing to do. Bearingbreaker92 | Talk 01:21, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just my opinion, but I think the backwards and forwards should be separated. They could be put nicely into the chart, and would make it a lil easier on the listening end. Bearingbreaker92 | Talk 14:17, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
An example of two I have just uploaded , I dont think people would want to sit through a minute of that just trying to hear both messages. So that is why I think they should be split up into two. Bearingbreaker92 | Talk 14:39, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Milner

Regarding this edit[2] and edit summary;

There is nothing in the article to indicate that this site was used in such a manner. A quick search of the web returns a bunch of blog mentions of Milner, mostly his own, and nothing that would give him such credence. If the lone Wall Street Journal mention is about this, then the article needs to be reworded (and the WSJ referenced) to reflect that. CovenantD 22:46, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, I've got a family member in the hospital right now, so any edits or comments that I make will be done as I have time and will probably be rather short in nature. If I seem abrupt or don't explain myself well, please assume good faith, be patient, and trust that I do have the good of the article in mind. CovenantD 21:18, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for commenting on my changes to your "List of backmasked messages" site.

I find a lot of backwards messages from many sources including Backmask Online. As of right now, I can't access Backmask Online (www.backmaskonline.com); either the site closed down or it isn't working. I just added a mention of Filter's "The 4th", and made sure I added a citation stating where the information I put in came from. I hope I did it right...

Thanks again, and take care.

Stay on the talkpage

Stay on the Backmasting page, please. I have addressed my concerns. Ronbo76 00:25, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So here's the best I can explain it — it's probably more original research than anything, but perhaps that one source will eventually be backed up with more if I find the time… with phonetic reversal, one is separating the words into phonemes, then reversing their order, whereas backmasking does a couple other weird things — reversing the pitch flow of vowel sounds, for example — and differs depending on the sample rate of the original recording. Plus, different speakers will produce a different effect in backmasking, whereas we should all be able to agree on how a phonetically reversed word sounds (if we agree on how the word is pronounced forwards).

When Tom Hulce as Mozart is speaking the "backwards" dialogue in Amadeus, he doesn't bother to actually imitate the sound of a reversed tape (not that his character would recognize that anyway). He's simply saying it backwards sound-by-sound. To point out another distinction, it's a lot harder to do "Satanic messages" (or any other messages) with phonetic reversal, because you'd have to be able to have it sound that way in all contexts by all speakers, not just in the context of one particular song — people would have to be able to "read" the message as well, phoneme, by phoneme, instead of vaguely hearing it. Hope that longwinded explanation helps… Lenoxus " * " 02:17, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All right, I've done what I can… mostly reincorporating bits of my old definition, with the clarification that backmasking is indeed a form of phonetic reversal, with precisions and quirks unique to the audio recording process. It feels to me like this is the sort of thing ultimately awaiting the creation of additional sources, so here's some fingers crossed for that! Thanks for your contributions, btw. Backmasking Article

I think you were the one that removed my Clint Eastwood addition to the list of backmasked messages in songs. Might I ask why? Anonymous 4:45, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

I was unable to find a source for the message. Wikipedia requires good sources for its information under the verifiability policy. If you have such a source, by all means add the information back in (you can see it here). Λυδαcιτγ 22:51, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
