Oneworld - Discussion with The Rambling Man

Hi The Rambling Man,
I have done some enhancement work in the Oneworld article over the past couple of months and recently nominated it for GA-Class under Engineering and Technology and failed. I understand some of the points that Dough4872 mentioned, however, I disagree with some of his points also. There is nothing in the article that is uncited except one that I will remove shortly. He also mentioned too many pictures, there is only 5 pictures and 4 logos that are outside of the gallery and infobox.
I would like to ask for your input on two things: (a) at the moment, the article is a Start-Class, what class would you class it as? and (b) I am interested in your objective opinion on the GA Review and seek your input on how I can improve it, considering my comments above.
I am willing to do the work, just need some directions. Thanks in advance for your help. Aviator006 (talk) 09:35, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Hello Aviator006. I'd done my fair share (two round-the-world trips) with Oneworld, so this article is of great interest to me. What I'll do is review it as if I was a GA reviewer. Perhaps then you can assess my comments to see if you think they're fair, we can modify the article (I'll be more than happy to help with that), check images for fair use and so on, and then head back to the GA. I prefer not to overrule or disagree with Dough4872 at this stage as I haven't had any time to review the article. I'll do my best to provide you with some good ideas, and when I get a chance, I'll have a look to see what Dough4872 has said as well. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:45, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Hi The Rambling Man. Please go ahead with your GA review and I'll be interested in your thought on how to get it into a GA-Class. Thanks again for your help! :) Aviator006 (talk) 02:45, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Hi Aviator006, sorry it's been so long, I've been inundated with both on- and off-wiki issues. I'll get onto the Oneworld article as soon as I can. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:42, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Christopher Dale Pratt

Hi. In the last couple of days, I've been trying to create a page on Christopher Dale Pratt, Chairman of both Swire Pacific and Cathay Pacific. Can you take a few minutes to see if there's room for improvement. Right now it's marked as being considered for deletion. (See [[1]]) I've looked into articles of other CEOs of SIA and AMR. Their contents are similar. My thought is if there're short stabs on CEOs of other airlines, may be one would be suitable for CPA. Would be glad to see if you have any suggestion of further improvement.

An exciting opportunity to improve yourself!

As a member of the Aviation WikiProject or one of its subprojects, you may be interested in testing your skills in the Aviation Contest! I created this contest, not to pit editor against editor, but to promote article improvement and project participation and camraderie. Hopefully you will agree with its usefulness. Sign up here, read up on the rules here, and discuss the contest here. The first round of the contest may not start until September 1st-unless a large number of editors signup and are ready to compete immediately! Since this contest is just beginning, please give feedback here, or let me know what you think on my talkpage. - Trevor MacInnis contribs 05:53, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Contest update

Well, it's just 1 day until the contest begins, so I thought I'd check in with everyone and make sure you're all ready to go. First I'd like everyone to check out the main contest page and read over the rules and the scoring system. If you have any final questions or concerns, make them known on the talk page. Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Contest/History/2009 is the scoreboard that will be updated, you can watchlist it. Check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Contest/Submissions which shows how your submission page should look. Another example is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Contest/Submissions Example, and your personal page should be listed at the footer of the page, which is also at Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Contest/Users. Again, take any questions to the contest talk page.

Good luck! - Trevor MacInnis contribs 20:55, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Oneworld - Discussion with Trevor MacInnis

Good morning Trevor,
The Oneworld article had major updates by myself over the last few months (before the Contest started) and it has just been promoted from C-Class to GA-Class (GAR). However, as part of the Contest, it must have B-Class Checklist completed. As I have been heavily involved in the updates, I can't do the B-Class Checklist... what can I do in order to satisfy the contest criteria? Aviator006 (talk) 01:07, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Anything higher than B-Class doesn't need the B-Class checklist, because they have their own individual processes for determining class (You'll notice that the banner doesn't ask for the checklist anymore, but before it was default assessing the article to Start-Class because it didn't have the checklist). The contest rules didn't explicitly explain this, so I added a note. Now that the article is GA-Class, to get any points you'll need to promote it to A- or FA-Class. To begin I'd suggest getting a peer review (that's good for a point); any improvements made as a result of that would probably get it ready for A-Class (20 points). - Trevor MacInnis contribs 01:47, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
I notice you put the article up for GAR (before Sept 1) and did a lot of editing required to promote it (after Sept 1). Strictly according to the rules you shouldn't get any points for this (edits, reviews, and promotions must occur during the round), but I'll consider it, review the edits more closely, and see how the other contestants are faring over the next few weeks. it may still count.- Trevor MacInnis contribs 01:58, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Cathay Pacific FA Status

I have nominated Cathay Pacific for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here.

You might want to follow all of the tips at WP:FCDW/March 17, 2008 for achieving a successful peer review ... I saw lots of MoS cleanup needs, and some citation tags. Good luck, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:41, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Contest scoring change

I've realized there may be an issue with the scoring system, and I have a solution, which I've explained here. Feedback is requested. - Trevor MacInnis contribs 23:53, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

With all the GA's you've gotten lately (congrats by the way), have you considered putting together a Good Topic? - Trevor MacInnis contribs 02:06, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Hey Trevor, thanks for coming by and making the suggestion. After reviewing the Good Topic page, I think I have two Good Topics
  1. Japan Airlines
  2. Cathay Pacific (incl. Cathay Pacific, Air Hong Kong and Dragonair) or Airlines of Hong Kong (incl. Cathay Pacific Group, Hong Kong Airlines and Hong Kong Express Airways)

I noticed all of the Good Topic has a Lead article, in my case, for the 1st one, would Japan Airlines be the lead article and the rest of the subsidiaries would be in the body? For the 2nd one, if I do it as 'Airlines of Hong Kong', do I need to write an article about the Airlines of Hong Kong first or can it be just a header? Aviator006 (talk) 04:35, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

I've never gone a Topic myself, but it seems like the header/head article for each topic must be a GA as well, so I'd go with Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific as the leads. - Trevor MacInnis contribs 21:44, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
Trevor, I put Japan Airlines for Peer Review, but forgot to update in the Contest, please add a point for September's score for me. In addition, in regards to the B-class review for Fuji Dream Airlines, there seems to be some grammatically error which I can't see myself, would you be able to advise and I will make the correction to take it up to B-class? Aviator006 (talk) 15:51, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Hello there Trevor,
I would like to start to get involved in Assessment, since everyone been helping to assess the articles I have nominated, it is about time I do the same. Let's start of with the easy ones first – B-class assessments. I have done 3 so far, but interested from an expert to see whether I've assessed them fairly and accurately. (They're also in my Submission page)

I do have some questions too.

  1. How come the Start-class article automatically marked to C-class (in preview and after save) when some of the B-class criteria failed? Should I update the 'class=start' item to 'class=C' if this occur?
  2. A relatively short article, which I would classify as a start (maybe because it is a new airline and its history is relatively short with a few cited sentences, but have history, destination, fleet, services sections + photos), but it satisfies all B-class criteria (ie. 'yes' to all 5 boxes)... should it be marked as B-class?
  3. If I upgrade an article from WP:Aviation Start-class to say C-class for argument sake, but say WP:Japan is still marked as Start-class, should I automatically upgrade and sync it with the WP:Aviation class I have just upgraded to? I have a few GA-status articles that the GA-reviewer sync the other Project class to GA-status as well, but would like to check this before I come across them. The reason for this question is, I have created a new article Waterfront Air, I have put it as Stub-class, as if I put it to Start-class, it will jump to C-class by the B-class review, when it is relatively light in content.

Thanks for checking and answering these for me... Aviator006 (talk) 14:12, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Those 3 review look fine, it's always a bit of a judgment call, but as you review more and more, it gets easier.
  1. The B-class checklist is built such that if 3 or more of the items are checked "yes" the article is automatically assessed as C-Class, and if all 5 are "yes" it automatically gets assessed as B-Class. You can update the class= when completing the checklist, but it's not vital.
  2. That's a tough one, but if the article honestly has all relevant information and all items are "yes", then yes, even a short article can be B-Class.
  3. A lot of projects do not use C-Class. And other projects use their own B-class checklist, and some of those have 6 items rater than 5. Personally, I update the Biography and Military History banners, but other projects I leave to be upgraded by their own members. 1 exception is when the article is upgraded beyond B. For your, article, go ahead and up it to start class. it will be automatically assessed as C-Class (for now, I have some ideas about changing this feature), which is fine for our project, but if you want to up the other projects assessments, I'd just change them to start-class.
If you have any more q's let me know. - Trevor MacInnis contribs 04:15, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Citations in lead

Wikipedia:LEAD#Citations says "The necessity for citations in a lead should be determined on a case-by-case basis by editorial consensus." - Would saying that the headquarters, Dragonair House, is at HKIA need a citation in the lead? WhisperToMe (talk) 08:41, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

That's true, however, I doubt anyone is going to challenge it when it is called 'Dragonair House'. The same section in WP:LEAD#Citations mentioned, "The verifiability policy advises that material that is challenged or likely to be challenged, and quotations, should be cited." I have kept the reference as a hidden comment, which can be easily restored if required. Hope that's okay with you? Aviator006 (talk) 11:14, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Trans States Airlines, part of AmericanConnection

Hi Mason, back on 11 May 2009, you edited the Trans States Airlines article and stated that "Trans States Airlines operated as AmericanConnection until May 2009." Mandarin names for Hong Kong-based companies

Is it wrong for the Mandarin name to be displayed alongside the Cantonese name for a Hong Kong-based company? New World Man (talk) 02:56, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

As Traditional Chinese (written) and Cantonese (spoken) are the de facto language of Hong Kong (refer Bilingualism in Hong Kong), it is unnecessary and inconsistent to include Mandarin name. This is the case for all Hong Kong article, if you feel so strongly about including this, please raise your issue with WikiProject Hong Kong, as such inclusion will need to be applied consistently across all Hong Kong-based company articles. Aviator006 (talk) 03:58, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
Hasn't Mandarin been co-official with Cantonese in Hong Kong since 1997? New World Man (talk) 02:37, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
No. You may like to discuss your proposal to the WikiProject Hong Kong first and gain consensus first. Aviator006 (talk) 03:19, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
We've discussed this at the WikiProject Hong Kong talk page. What would be your advice for people wanting to find the Mandarin reading of the Hanzi characters in these particular articles? New World Man (talk) 09:01, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
My advice is to use Google Translate. Unfortunately, Wikipedia is not a dictionary or a translation service, it provides pronounciation in the official or de facto languages of that article (eg. Japanese in Toyota, Korean in Asiana Airlines), so in this case, Traditional Chinese (written) and Cantonese (spoken) for Cathay Pacific.Aviator006 (talk) 16:23, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Thank you! I never knew you could use Google Translate for Romanization purposes. New World Man (talk) 23:32, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Reviewer granted

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:10, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

A-Class opinion needed for British Airways page

I've been doing a lot of work on the British Airways page since June 5 2010 to get the page to A-Class from GA-Class but I need two uninvolved editors to say yes or no to the change. Since BA ties in pretty nicely with your other speciality of the oneworld alliance I thought you would probably be best qualified to help me with this. You don't have to do it right away but a quick response would be helpful. The review page is here and I've done all the work outlined by SidewinderX (talk) even though it isn't all scored through. • merge and tighten paragraphs. Since there are numerous one- and two-sentence paragraphs, merging these together helps editors afterwards add information.
  • wikification.

Please disregard the following section if you are busy. Only concentrate on the jobs above.

If you have time, you could further help by:

  • adding pictures/media of the involved subjects to Wiki Commons.
  • bringing together quotes regarding those who direct or hold significant relationships with organisations such as Greenpeace, SkyTeam, Oneworld, Star Alliance, Puma AG, Adidas, Nike, Inc. and Australian rules football/soccer clubs.
  • finding press releases, news articles, etc. for Star Alliance and Vietnam Airlines, which don’t have a lot of information during their early days.

Once you have embarked on the activities above, please drop User:Sp33dyphil a message at his user page.

And of course, if you have any jobs for Sp33dyphil, just drop him a message.

MfD nomination of User:Aviator006/UBX/THY

I see that the picture has already been deleted. It was a rather ancient page, I had little knowledge of wiki back then, when I created the page; that's why I thought that was the only way I could do it. I'm sorry. But I see you mentioned me being indefinitely blocked? I couldn't get that? --Stultiwikiatext me 10:46, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

The indefinitely blocked information is from your turkish user page, I am sure you don't need to me to explain it. Aviator006 (talk) 21:02, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
