Some comments on this interesting page:

1. Loco classification: whether second (& subsequent) letters are in superscript or ordinary upper-case depends on whether the classification is using pre- or post-TMS numbering. As it happens n steam locos have post-TMS numbering, so all have superscript. Many diesels and electrics were renumbered, though, and their pre-TMS classifications should be in superscript format - that's what the numberplates said. Using this format helps differentiate between pre- and post-TMS numbers, which are otherwise easy to confuse.

2. Railway line names: all current railway lines have offical names, as gazetted by the New Zealand Geographic Board, all of which (I think) are the same as names used by ONTRACK and Toll. I think we should use these as the primary names. (These include Johnsonville Line, not Branch - it's never been a branch).

3. Railway/Train Stations: while I agree in general about railway vs train station, modern Auckland signage says Xxxx Train Station (except Britomart, which is Britomart Transport Interchange, I think). I'm a great believer in referring to things by the names they bear (cf loco numberplates), so these locations should be Train Stations.

This'll be quick, I'm afraid. Haven't much time these days.
1. Fair enough, though I do tend to find the standardisation of all diesel and electric class names into all-caps to be more useful and less confusing. What of classes who had some members make it to TMS but not others? Do we go for DA or DA?
2. Where can these official names be found; is there an online database? And with regards to the J-ville Branch, it is a branch by very definition and became a branch the second the Tawa Flat deviation was opened. I find the majority of text sources I have read refer to it as the J-ville Branch, and I'm frankly not all too concerned with the changing naming whims of the current operator.
3. I'm happy to accept that with regards to Auckland (mainly because moving everything to Railway Station would have involved far too much time and probably caused disputes). Now it's just a matter of fixing the few articles on "Train Stations" in the Wellington area. - Axver 14:41, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Taupo Railway Proposals[edit]

I propose that this article (Taupo Railway Proposals) should be renamed to "Taupo Branch" or similar, as proposed railway lines should be simply named as they would be if they were actually built.--Lholden 22:25, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Canterbury Interior Main Line would appear to set a precedent for your proposal, and I'm sure the yet-to-be-written Wainuiomata Railway Proposals (I have a half-complete draft for this article) would suit "Wainuiomata Branch". However, my concern is Nelson Railway Proposals. Would it be the "Nelson Branch"? I'm not sure, as it seems to me that any Nelson line would have been a main or secondary line rather than a mere branch. I was thinking a good alternative would be "Nelson - Blenheim Line" in accordance with Stillwater - Westport Line et al (and I think that would have been its name had the line started around 1960 and subsequently replaced by the "Nelson Notional Railway" been completed), but that isn't the only proposal that would be covered in such an article. - Axver 23:00, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've just completed an article on the Avondale - Southdown line, which is another proposed branch. --Lholden 23:06, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, good to see. If you want to do the Taupo move, I'd support that. In a few days, when I have the time, I'll do some research on the proposed Nelson lines and see what can be done with that article's title. At this stage, I think that perhaps Nelson - Blenheim Line would be best, with sections on previous and subsequent proposals. - Axver 23:21, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
