Re: How to get out of an edit war with spammer?[edit]

Hi. Sorry for the late reply. I've been off Wiki for a while. I see Beetstra semi protected the Sequence assembly page which should help. If the article stability deteriorates again after semi-protection expires (in mid-Jan) then I suggest removing the table listing available assemblers.

In the long run the best way to stop that sort of disruptive editing is to get rid of all the listings. I know they are useful in someways but it's not particularly encyclopedic and those types of lists of external links are discouraged (see external links guidelines - links to avoid #14) in large part because they encourage just this sort of spamming behavior. In general, people should be able to find that sort of thing through Google/their favorite alternative or a directory. Wikipedia articles tend to be more encyclopedic when they focus on summarizing the state of knowledge about a subject and leave out the comprehensive listings of products/services. -- SiobhanHansa 20:14, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
