Ken Wilson (mountaineering writer)[edit]

I noticed your edits to Ken Wilson (mountaineering writer) and subsequently I've been talking to YHA's archivist about YHA's involvement with Mountain Craft and he thinks the Guardian obituary is overstating things. There is nothing in YHA's records about the organisation having any role in the production of Mountain Craft other than publishing it on behalf of the Mountaineering Association. Certainly, he thinks, YHA had no editorial connection and the only financial connection was as a supplier to the MA. Have you got anything more? Or access to any of the editions in question to see what they say about ownership/publishers? Nthep (talk) 20:07, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi There,
I didn't add the comment about Mountain Craft on Ken Wilson's page (but did add it to the YHA page).
There is another Wilson obituary, by a different author which expresses the same point about Mountain Craft in a slightly different way, that is in the Alpine Journal (http://www.alpinejournal.org.uk/Contents/Contents_2017_files/AJ%202017%20385-425%20In%20Memoriam.pdf) and the authour, John Cleare, he was a contemporary of Wilson and was active in the publishing industry at the time that Mountain Craft & Mountain were around).
That obituary includes the phrase about "the more lavish but rather amateurish Mountain Craft, the organ of Jerry Wright’s Mountaineering Association, but owned by the YHA."
However I'd be interested to know if the YHA archivist has any uncertainty concerning the YHA's ownership of the magazine Mountain. I have copies of the relevant issues of Mountain magazine which seem pretty clear on that point.
The contents page of each issue of Mountain, from #1-#26, includes the statement that “Mountain is published and owned by the Youth Hostels Association”, although in later issues it was revised to read “Mountain is published and owned by the Youth Hostels Association (England and Wales)” . In addition the first paragraph of the editorial in Issue #1 of Mountain seems relevant, it includes the line that “Mountain, the successor to Mountain Craft, will be published and sponsored by the Youth Hostel Association.” Perhaps also significant is the previous line reading “The Mountaineering Association has now merged with the Youth Hostel Association”.
As Mountain Craft was the magazine of the Mountaineering Association, and was also the predecessor of Mountain, it might explain the stetement about Mountain Craft which appears in Wilson's obituarys
From what I can understand, Ken Wilson bought up the ownership of Mountain after he had been editing it for a while, it seems a reasonable assumption that issue #27 (May 1973), when the ownership statement was changed to read “Mountain is published and owned by Mountain Magazine Ltd.” marks the point when the ownership left the YHA.
My interest is more in the magazines than in Ken Wilson so I'd be interested to hear what the YHA archivist can make of this extra info.
I have taken a photo of the relevant page from the first issue of Mountain (which includes the editorial I have quoted from and also the ownership statement), I can't upload it here because I can't confirm I own copyright but am happy to email it for the archivist's use.
All the best

Hi. I'm sure the archivist would be very interested in seeing the editorial from issue 1 of Mountain. As it's raising stuff that YHA doesn't have documented anywhere. If you want to email me (Special:email), I can pass it on. Do you have copies of the last issues of Mountain Craft? Do they have the same ownership statement? Nthep (talk) 08:10, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've sent you a dropbox link.
I do have a number issues of Mountain Craft but I'll need to rumage around to find the latest ones in the series. I'll try to do that when I have time and come back with anything useful. Babybrew6 (talk) 13:12, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Got it thanks. I'll let you know what happens. Nthep (talk) 14:11, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hiya, a new year update for you. I've now dug out a pile of old copies of Mountain Craft and have leafed through issues #57-81 which are those covering the final six years of publication. I didn't spot any statements about ownership or anything that clearly linked Mountain Craft with the YHA.
I did come across an advert in an early copy of Mountain which might be of interest to YHA archives. This was in Mountain #3 (May 1969), it was an recruitment ad for instructors "to assist in the running of YHA/MA mountaincraft courses"; MA is the Mountaineering Association (and Mountain Craft was the magazine of the Mountaineering Association), interestingly applicants are advised to obtain an application form for the vacancy from the YHA in St Albans. I'll send you a seperate email with a link to a copy of the advert in case it is of interest. Babybrew6 (talk) 12:17, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the image. The lack of any content in those issues suggests, to me, that YHA's ownership was at arm's length with minimal involvemen and more likely to be through the commercial arm rather than the main charity. Nthep (talk) 14:25, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Nunn[edit]

Thanks for creating the Paul Nunn article which I reviewed today. I did some tidying up and also linked the article from various others that reference Nunn; this also led me to add a snippet from the Old Man of Stoer article. One of the linked articles suggested Nunn was once a stunt double for Sean Connery. That would be a great fact to nominate for Did You Know (DYK)! Best wishes. Paul W (talk) 11:09, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The tidying up looks good. I had come across mention of the stunt double role. Now had a dig around and found a few other sources on that so maybe I'll put something together. Andy Babybrew6 (talk) 12:01, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Andy (Babybrew6), the window to nominate this new article for a DYK will close on 5 February. Let me know if I can help. Paul W (talk) 11:22, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've added some material about Nunn's role as climbing double for Sean Connery and also added a short section about the production of Five Days One Summer to that page. Have also submitted a DYK about Nunn but I didn't manage to find any online references to that (although I was able to track down several print articles) - given the lack of online material I guess the DYK might not pass review but happy to see how it pans out.
