Thanks for your reply on the talk page, and ...

Vow, this page has no history? It seems your edits are so well-balanced and of such high quality that nobody needs to deal with you directly! :) Anyway, I'm going to abandon my pseudonym account, and I will probably not immediately edit the same articles, so I thought I would say good-bye to you. You are one of the most NPOV and balanced editors that I came across! Keep up the good work! --Merzul 22:29, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Well thank you! It has been a pleasure collaborating with you, as well. In whatever incarnation you appear on Wikipedia, all the best. Barte 22:36, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi! I don't mind my posts in talk page being deleted. So no worries. I am with you in this. I hate to see some of the article content overlapping, but not sure myself which one to delete/move.--w_tanoto (talk) 20:24, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your help!

Hey Barte,

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for your good work on High definition optical disc format war‎. I certainly didn't expect my little {{fact}} to prompt such a flurry of activity, but considering how nicely you cleaned up the references, I'm glad it did :) --jonny-mt 08:12, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Bodega Bay

Thanks for keeping an eye on Marin County, California. You're right that the town of Bodega Bay is located in Sonoma County. However, keep in mind that the bay itself is split between Sonoma and Marin. Cheers! - Stepheng3 (talk) 22:07, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

That sounds plausible. Thanks for looking into it more closely. - Stepheng3 (talk) 04:57, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your note! Yeah it is a kind of "cute" template, isn't it? It looks like it was made up by User:IRP in October 2008. I saw another editor use it on a talk page and made a note of it on the page where I keep track of useful templates and such User:Ahunt/Tags. Feel free to use it yourself! - Ahunt (talk) 19:48, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

It turns out that they are both the same template via a redirect to Template:Outdent! So either one works! - Ahunt (talk) 20:34, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing up the para I added, I think your version is better than my original! I thought the article was interesting enough to cite, although one oddity is the mention of the "developer switch". This tends to indicate that the OS will only fully run on specialized hardware as this switch would not be present on any old netbook. It would be interesting to find more on this, as, to me at least, it tends to point towards some sort of attempt to lock in the OS to certain hardware, at least to gain full functionality. I know you have Chromium OS, can the dev mode be turned on some other way? - Ahunt (talk) 13:40, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Well that is how collaboration is supposed to work - someone writes something and then the next editor makes it better (and not worse)! I agree the "dev switch" is odd, and, as I mentioned, makes me think of hardware lock-in. The fact that the article I cited says "The first Google Netbook, expected out later this year, is intended for use by consumers. However, Google is looking at developing a somewhat different version for the enterprise which would have functionality, especially in management, that businesses might prefer" is probably significant and should go in the article somewhere. Do you want to add that or shall I? - Ahunt (talk) 16:15, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your response - okay I will add it. - Ahunt (talk) 20:51, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello,

I reverted your revert for Joli OS. I made sure to perform small changes as you can see in the revision history: description, screenshot, additionnal information, etc... My goal is only to correct mistakes and add more information.

The new version is far more relevant and up-to-date but I would be happy to edit what's considered as un-encylopedic language.

Thank you. - DclsBOSS (talk) 11:51, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Copied the above to the article's talk page and replied there. Barte (talk) 16:53, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

We have yet another well meaning person who has changed all the version numbers for Google Chrome OS to browser version numbers and cited the Google browser blog as a ref. The discussion is here. Once again correcting this has been stymied by Google not publishing the current OS version numbers anywhere other than on a Chromebook itself. Even though I have shown that he is citing the wrong refs he won't remove the offending text and I have already done two reverts on this. Can you have a look. An actual listing of Chrome OS versions would be ideal if you can locate it or have access to it, because I don't. - Ahunt (talk) 15:02, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Edit-a-thon tomorrow (Saturday) in Oakland

Hi, I hope you will be joining us tomorrow afternoon at the Edit-a-thon at Tech Liminal, in Oakland. We'll be working on articles relating to women and democracy (and anything else that interests you). It's sponsored by the California League of Women Voters, Tech Liminal, and me.

If this is the first you are hearing of this event, my apologies for the last-minute notice! I announced it on the San Francisco email list and by a banner on your watchlist, but I neglected to look at the San Francisco invitation list until this evening. If you can't make it this time, I hope to see you at a similar event soon! -Pete (talk) 04:40, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

"The Chrome OS"

Hi, I am the one who corrected the sentence "A Chromebook is a personal computer running the Google Chrome OS operating system." to A Chromebook is a personal computer running the Google Chrome OS." I don't see the reason for reverting it back to it's old version. The term "Operating System" in short is OS, so I deemed the redundancy of that sentence unnecessary. I'll reply here.

You're invited to the first-ever Wikipedia Iconathon!

Help build the visual language of Wikipedia at the first ever Wikimedia Foundation/Noun Project Iconathon

The Wikimedia Foundation is partnering up with the Noun Project to run the first-ever Wikipedia Iconathon on April 6th at WMF headquarters, and you're invited!

What is an Iconathon: An iconathon is a co-design process where Wikimedia staff, the user community, and a few graphic designers collaboratively discuss what symbols could best represent a concept for an icon – for example, what's the best icon for New Editor, Revert or Oversight? Sketches will be converted into high fidelity icons by Noun Project graphic designers, and will be released under a free license for use by anyone on the Internet. Help build the free encyclopedia icon set that anyone in the world can share and reuse!

Logistics: The event runs from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm on April 6th at the Wikimedia Foundation office in San Francisco. Follow the signs at the door! We'll have plenty of paper and pens/pencils for sketching.

How to sign up: Please register here using the code 'wiki'

Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Barte. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Again, we're very sorry about this issue; hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after this :). If you have any questions, just drop them at the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) 22:03, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Chromebook

Not constructive? Please, do tell. I standardized according to pages like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultrabook . The fact is the Chromebook page is a mess and it looks pathetic when Wikipedia has less useful documentation than 3rd party Wikis that have nothing to do with the overall scope of the topic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BotOrNot (talkcontribs) 07:02, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

(Talk page lurker) - Um, check your edit. You deleted the infobox, the lead that explained what he subject is about, the reflist, all the categories and in fact 3/4 of the article. What was left had no context and made no sense. It looked like the usual sort of VisualEditor style error. - Ahunt (talk) 10:58, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
VisualEditor wasn't used; this was a standard-issue source edit. Barte (talk) 13:45, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Opting in to VisualEditor

As you may know, VisualEditor ("Edit beta") is currently available on the English Wikipedia only for registered editors who choose to enable it. Since you have made 100 or more edits with VisualEditor this year, I want to make sure that you know that you can enable VisualEditor (if you haven't already done so) by going to your preferences and choosing the item, "MediaWiki:Visualeditor-preference-enable". This will give you the option of using VisualEditor on articles and userpages when you want to, and give you the opportunity to spot changes in the interface and suggest improvements. We value your feedback, whether positive or negative, about using VisualEditor, at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:22, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

It's the built-in hazard of a forum in which anyone can post. In this case, I don't think you were dealing with a troll, at least a typical one. But even so, it soon became clear: best not to feed it. Barte (talk) 01:17, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Nice to meet you at the edit-a-thon :)

Hi Bart. :) I'm really happy to have met you at the Wikipedia Art And Feminism Meetup in San Francisco yesterday. I'm so impressed that you started the Laurie Halsey Brown article for the edit-a-thon. I went back and searched the SFPL's online databases, and there are some sources you may want to use, like a couple of issues of Art in America and a piece in The Village Voice ("Lost and found" by Karen Rosenberg, 12/2001, Volume 46, Issue 50). You can read it online if you have an SFPL library card, and if you don't have a card, you can get a library card if you're a resident of California. Hope this helps. And hope to see you at the next Bay Area edit-a-thon. :) Msannakoval (talk) 00:44, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

Nice meeting you too, Anna! And thanks for your help on this. SFPL seems like a nice resource for this and other research: I'll sign up and take a look at the sources. Thanks so much. And if you see anything askew in the entry, don't hesitate to fix. Barte (talk) 02:43, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello,

I would like to restore the article for Jolicloud. It currently redirects to Joli OS. But Joli OS is only one of the Jolicloud products. People who are looking for info about Jolicloud as a company are misleaded because of this redirection.

I agree with you that the company situation wasn't clear 2 years ago when the rediction has been made. But now, things are clear: https://www.jolicloud.com/our-story Of course, the article should be updated with encylopedic language.

Finally, no doubt the company is notable. Its product Joli OS is notable as one of the first cloud operating systems. And everyone already agree on that. Its other product Jolibook was one of the first cloud computers alongside the Chromebook. And many articles cover the products Jolicloud Me, Drive and Library released during the past 2 years. Those articles can be used as references to update the Jolicloud entry.

Thank you in advance for your reply. I hope we'll find a solution soon.

How narrow do we have to be in biographical articles?

Hi, Barte,

I saw your rationale for your revert of my edit to Charles Murray (author), and I see what you are getting at there. But while the article is still far from being up to featured article completeness, what is the harm in adding a sourced quotation about Murray's views, especially in the section of the article that pertains to Murray's views on a closely related issue? Let's discuss on the article talk page. I reverted your kind revert, but perhaps a discussion will resolve our disagreement amicably. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 03:35, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

Invitation

A gummi bear holding a sign that says "Thank you"
Thank you for using VisualEditor and sharing your ideas with the developers.

Hello, Barte,

The Editing team is asking for your help with VisualEditor. I am contacting you because you were one of the very first testers of VisualEditor, back in 2012 or early 2013. Please tell them what they need to change to make VisualEditor work better for you. The team has a list of top-priority problems, but they also want to hear about small problems. These problems may make editing less fun, take too much of your time, or be as annoying as a paper cut. The Editing team wants to hear about and try to fix these small things, too.

You can share your thoughts by clicking this link. You may respond to this quick, simple, anonymous survey in your own language. If you take the survey, then you agree your responses may be used in accordance with these terms. This survey is powered by Qualtrics and their use of your information is governed by their privacy policy.

More information (including a translateable list of the questions) is posted on wiki at mw:VisualEditor/Survey 2015. If you have questions, or prefer to respond on-wiki, then please leave a message on the survey's talk page.

Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:12, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

VisualEditor update

This note is only delivered to English Wikipedia subscribers of the visual editor's newsletter.

The location of the visual editor's preference has been changed from the "Beta" tab to the "Editing" section of your preferences on this wiki. The setting now says Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta. This aligns en.wiki with almost all the other WMF wikis; it doesn’t mean the visual editor is complete, or that it is no longer “in beta phase” though.

This action has not changed anything else for editors: it still honours editors’ previous choices about having it on or off; logged-out users continue to only have access to wikitext; the “Edit” tab is still after the “Edit source” one. You can learn more at the visual editor’s talk page.

We don’t expect this to cause any glitches, but in case your account no longer has the settings that you want, please accept our apologies and correct it in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences. Thank you for your attention, Elitre (WMF) -16:32, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

MOS:IDENTITY is being revisited: How should Wikipedia refer to transgender individuals before and after their transition?

You are being contacted because you contributed to a recent discussion of MOS:IDENTITY that closed with the recommendation that Wikipedia's policy on transgender individuals be revisited.

Two threads have been opened at the Village Pump:Policy. The first addresses how the Manual of Style should instruct editors to refer to transgender people in articles about themselves (which name, which pronoun, etc.). The second addresses how to instruct editors to refer to transgender people when they are mentioned in passing in other articles. Your participation is welcome.
