Ernest Crandall was originally from Rutland, Vt., where he was a reporter and photographer for The Rutland Herald. In 1905, he moved to Washington where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.[1]

Although Crandall spent 35 years as a photographer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture [2], he is best-known for his iconic photographs of Washington, DC [3]. During that time, he was also the official photographer for the Carnegie Institute’s archaeological expeditions to Yucatan, Mexico to study the ruins of Mayan temples (1925-1927) [4], and he enjoyed a long-running working relationship with the Daughters of the American Revolution to photograph and publish pictures of historic interiors.[5]

Aside from his agricultural photos, Crandall’s work appeared regularly in many reputable magazines and journals, most-frequently, The American Monthly Magazine, published by the Daughters of the American Revolution.[6] Other magazines that published his work include Country Life [7], Farmer’s Bulletin [8], the American Annual of Photography, and National Geographic [9]. Additional publications to include photographs by Crandall include the book Washington, The Nations’s Capital [10], the Inventory of Seeds and Plants Imported by the Foreign Seed and Plant Introduction [11], and the contemporary book Monument Wars [12].

Crandall won several awards for his photographs, including third place in a competition by the American Forestry Association to find the most beautiful photograph of an American tree [13], and third prize in the Wanamaker Competition, which was judged by Alfred Steiglitz and included 1400 submissions [14].

Aside from his photography, Crandall was active in civic service. He was a founding member and Treasurer of the Federal Photographers Society [15], and the Postal Photographic Club [16], and was a member of the Art Club of Washington. [17]

Ernest L. Crandall has work in many prominent collections today, including the the New York Public Library [18], the Latin American Library Photographic Archive [19], Tulane University [20], the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. [21], and the Library of Congress [22].
