Caravonica, Queensland

Sorry about my confusion last night. The problem started because the Queensland Globe and Qld Place Names both have the wrong coords for Kamerunga Crossing and Lake Placid (the unbounded locality) putting both in the middle of Caravonica, and so I went away to historic maps to locate them more accurately. However, by later in the day, when I went to implement the more accurate coords, I was away from my laptop and using my tablet (where I cannot run Qld Globe) and assumed (wrongly!) that the river would be the natural boundary between the suburbs and hence the crossing spanned both and should be placed in both suburbs, but got interrrupted after just doing the Caravonica update. So given the crossing is entirely in Kamerunga, I agree it doesn't belong in Caravonica article, but on the other hand, you have finessed the issue so nicely there, so maybe we should leave it that way. Your call! If you are wondering why the coords are wrong in Qld Place Names (and hence Qld Globe), it is due them only being recorded in the QPN with degrees and minutes (but no seconds), a decision that was taken to save memory space when they first computerised their paper records! So whenever I encounter over yet-another-of-these "no seconds" inaccuracies, I email the QPN folks and let them know and they then update that entry with more accurate coords and then that normally flows through into the QLd Globe the following day. Because the affected feature types are mostly not of much current importance to them (a lot of them are unbounded localities which are often ill-defined in any case) they don't seem interested enough to undertake a project to fix all of them, but they do respond to specific requests as they understand that I am citing the QPN entry in Wikipedia and so I need the QPN coords to be correct. It may take some time for Kamerunga Crossing to be fixed though as the guy who I correspond with is on holidays at the moment, so it may be some weeks rather than the usual few days to get it fixed. Thanks for letting me know. I think it's okay to leave it that way as the crossing is a link between the two suburbs anyway. It's not as common as a river median boundary, it's a very unusual and somewhat rare type of boundary. It's even more confusing as suburbs and localities with other sections of the Barron River have different boundary demarcations. Bgtips1001 (talk) 00:26, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Caravonica, Queensland

You changed the name of the Indigenous people but the citation gives the name that was in the article previously. Can you add the "Yirrganydji are the Indigenous people of the Djabugay (Tjapukai) traditional country" (that you put in the edit summary) with a citation so that it all hangs togther. Also thank you for sorting out the Bruce Highway/Mulgrave Road/Ray Jones Drive, as every map I looked at seemed to be saying something different about whether the Bruce Highway ended at that point or continued on as one or both of the other roads; I had been intending to leave you a message to ask you if you could shed any light on it but you had updated it before I did. Hi, Kerry. It's complicated with Indigenous lands and groups as they sometimes overlap and there can be more than one claim but I'll see what I can do about the Yirrganydji text. Regarding Bruce Highway, Mulgrave Road is route A1 which is 'alternative route'. Google maps also shows the road as being both Bruce Highway and Mulgrave Road if you zoom into the maps in Earlville, for example. The GPS also displays the road as Bruce Highway. I found a couple of references for Bruce Highway and Mulgrave Road. Sorry, I realise A1 does not stand for alternative route, it is an A classified road. The primary Bruce Highway extension is the Ray Jones Drive. The road signage where the road splits has Bruce Highway listed and the Bruce Highway southern access corridor project citation lists "Bruce Highway (Ray Jones Drive) from Kate Street (renamed Links Drive)" and "Widening of the Bruce Highway to 6 lanes between Kate Street (renamed Links Drive) and Aumuller Street." With the secondary route of Mulgrave Road also listed as Bruce Highway, it would be the alternative route. Bgtips1001 (talk) 12:34, 5 December 2020 (UTC)

Yes, the overlap of traditional areas is complicated and contested. Lacking the expertise, I don't make choices among competing claims. If I see claims to be traditional owners or about extent of Indigenous languages, I just add all of them (appropriately cited). WP:NPOV is our friend when it comes to contested matters. Re the Bruce Highway, citations are desireable but even just knowing what is going on would be a big help; I was quite confused by it all. BTW, with roads, some time back it was decided that we talk about roads in terms of going from "bigger place" to "smaller place", which appeared to be generally consistent with government practices in the various states. Due to Qld's geography, this generally plays out in Queensland as south-to-north and east-to-west (with some exceptions). You see this "sense of direction" also with the distances/directions in the infobox, i.e. it's distance/direction from Cairns to Woree in Woree's infobox, not vice versa. This is why I talk about the highway entering and exiting suburbs -- this is just observing the same directionality. As a highway usually crosses the boundaries of a suburb twice , it makes it easier to talk about these 2 places if you can name them differently and in theory (but I suspect not yet in practice), you should be able to trace the highways through the suburb/locality articles. That makes complete sense now to me about the direction when there is a standardised method for it. I will go by the standardised method that you have written from now on. I am aware that different countries will have different standards for distances. For example, road signs listing towns or locations in one country may show farthest location and distance on top, and vice versa in another country. When it comes to Indigenous traditional areas, I'll try to research as much as possible and present the most neutral point of view, though I appreciate the input and will utilise it.Bgtips1001 (talk) 05:04, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

New schools

Just noting your interest in the new school in Baringa, if you are interested in adding new schools, you can find the recently opened/closed state schools here where at the top of the page there is a link to a spreadsheet. For new/changed/closed non-state schools, you need to go to here and if you need other info about non-state schools, try here. I note that the "Contact Us" at that site are generally quite helpful, but they have only existed though for a relatively small number of years, so usually can't answer questions that go back before they were established. convert units

The {{convert}} template is our friend for dealing with unit conversions. So if you want to talk about something being 5km, you write {{convert|5|km}} and what magically appears is 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) and it chooses the most likely other unit you will want, so kms get shown as miles, etc. You can force it to generate any other unit as you require, e.g. e.g. {{convert|5|km|ft}} gives 5 kilometres (16,000 ft) Kerry (talk) 05:33, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Visual editor

I notice you are using the old text/markup editor. Can I tempt you to try the Visual Editor? To enable it, go to Preferences (top right of screen when logged in), choose the Editing tab, scroll down to "Editing mode" and set the dropdown to "Show me both editors", then scroll to the bottom of that page and click on Save. Now when you are looking at an article, you will get two tabs, "Edit" (Visual Editor) and "Edit source" (what you currently do). Visual Editor is a lot more like Microsoft Word. There's a few things it can't do but for a lot of straightforward content writing, it's much easier. Also you can flick between them using the "pencil" icon, so you can have the best of both worlds. Try it! Note, I am your local Wikipedia trainer so I can do a Zoom session with you and demonstrate how to do things or watch you doing things and give you some tips. Rather than delete the links to it, it's probably better to create an article for the Greater Flagstone development to replace the redirect. Are you interested in learning how to create new articles? I am happy to explain. Or would you be interested in expanding a new article if I get it started for you? A quick google search suggest there is plenty of source material.
